Book excerpt: The time profiles of many gamma-ray bursts consist of distinct pulses, which offers the possibility of characterizing the temporal structure of these bursts using a relatively small set of pulse shape parameters. This pulse decomposition analysis has previously been performed on a small sample of bright long bursts using binned data from BATSE, which comes in several data types, and on a sample of short bursts using the BATSE Time-Tagged Event (TTE) data type. The authors have developed an interactive pulse-fitting program using the phenomenological pulse model of Norris, et. al. and a maximum-likelihood fitting routine. They have used this program to analyze the Time-to-Spill (TTS) data for all bursts observed by BATSE up through trigger number 2000, in all energy channels for which TTS data is available. They present statistical information on the attributes of pulses comprising these bursts, including relations between pulse characteristics through the course of a burst. They carry out simulations to determine the biases that their procedures may introduce. They find that pulses tend to have shorter rise times than decay times, and tend to be narrower and peak earlier at higher energies. They also find that pulse brightness, pulse width, and pulse hardness ratios do not evolve monotonically within bursts, but that the ratios of pulse rise times to decay times tends to decrease with time within bursts.

Book excerpt: The principal goal of our phase 1 investigation was the development of techniques and data analysis tools for pulsar searches and timing. After the launch of the Compton Observatory, we received from the Burst and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) team one day of discriminator large area (DISCLA) data for use in the development and testing of data analysis techniques. Using this first day of data for testing and optimizing our timing tools we detected four x-ray binary pulsars, Vela X-1, Cen X-3, 4U 0115+63, and GX 301-2. Subsequently, we received four more days of data, allowing us to test our timing tools with data from a variety of days. In summary, using the tools we developed based on the first day of data that we received, we have detected 8 pulsars in 5 days of data, or roughly one quarter of the approximately 30 known x-ray binary pulsars. In addition to the pulsars listed above, we detected GX 1+4, 4U 1626-67, OAO 1657-415, and Her X-1. Many of the data analysis tools that we developed have been ported to MSFC and are being used for the analysis of BATSE data. The author has developed an interactive pulse-fitting program written in IDL using the phenomenological pulse model of Norris, et al., a maximum-likelihood fitting routine, and a semi-automatic routine to determine initial guesses for the fitting routine from time profiles smoothed by a wavelet de-noising algorithm. The author has used this program to analyze the Time-to-Spill (TTS) data for all bursts observed by BATSE up through trigger number 2000, in all energy channels for which TTS data is available. He presents statistical information on the attributes of pulses comprising these bursts, including relations between pulse characteristics in different energy channels, and the evolution of pulse characteristics through the course of a burst. He carries out simulations to determine the biases that his procedures may introduce. Among the results are that pulses tend to have shorter rise times than decay times, and tend to be narrower and peak earlier at higher energies. He also examines correlations between brightness measures and timescale measures which may result from cosmological time dilation of bursts, or from intrinsic properties of burst sources or from selection effects. The correlations between these parameters among pulses within individual bursts give a measure of the intrinsic effects while the correlations among bursts could result both from intrinsic and cosmological effects. He finds that timescales tend to be shorter in bursts with higher peak fluxes, but tend to be longer in bursts with higher total fluences. He also finds that peak fluxes and total fluences of bursts are uncorrelated, indicating that they cannot both be good distance indicators for bursts.

However, their exploration could provide a useful tool for a better understanding of the early Universe because they belong to the most distant and violent objects that astronomers know. This book tries to bring more information about a so-called group of intermediate-duration bursts claimed by different authors employing different data samples. Firstly, duration and spectral hardness properties of bursts from the Reuven Ramaty High-Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager are statistically analysed. The obtained results bring a suspicion that these intermediate bursts gather into a separate group. Secondly, these bursts are investigated in more detail with respect to their spectral lags, peak count rates, redshifts, supernova observations, and so forth. Thirdly, long-duration bursts with known redshifts and with derived pseudo-redshifts detected by The Burst and Transient Source Experiment, Swift and Fermi bursts with known redshifts, are used to study the cosmological effects on the observed flux and fluence distributions.

Book excerpt: The various possibilities for the origin ("progenitors") of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) manifest in differing observable properties. Through deep spectroscopic and high-resolution imaging observations of some GRB hosts, I demonstrate that well-localized long-duration GRBs are connected with otherwise normal star-forming galaxies at moderate redshifts of order unity. Using high-mass binary stellar population synthesis models, I quantify the expected spatial extent around galaxies of coalescing neutron stars, one of the leading contenders for GRB progenitors. I then test this scenario by examining the offset distribution of GRBs about their apparent hosts making extensive use of ground-based optical data from Keck and Palomar and space-based imaging from the Hubble Space Telescope. The offset distribution appears to be inconsistent with the coalescing neutron star binary hypothesis (and, similarly, black-hole--neutron star coalescences); instead, the distribution is statistically consistent with a population of progenitors that closely traces the ultra-violet light of galaxies. This is naturally explained by bursts which originate from the collapse of massive stars ``collapsars''). This claim is further supported by the unambiguous detections of intermediate-time (approximately three weeks after the bursts) emission ``bumps'' which appear substantially more red than the afterglows themselves. I claim that these bumps could originate from supernovae that occur at approximately the same time as the associated GRB; if true, GRB 980326 and GRB 011121 provide strong observational evidence connecting cosmological GRBs to high-redshift supernovae and implicate massive stars as the progenitors of at least some long-duration GRBs.
