Book Effects of Microstructure and Frequency on Corrosion Fatigue Crack Growth in Ti 8Al 1Mo 1V and Ti 6Al 4V

Download or read book Effects of Microstructure and Frequency on Corrosion Fatigue Crack Growth in Ti 8Al 1Mo 1V and Ti 6Al 4V written by LA. Cooley and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue crack growth studies were conducted on Ti-8Al-1Mo-1V and Ti-6Al-4V alloys in 3.5% NaCl aqueous solution. Each alloy was studied in two microstructural conditions and at two cyclic frequencies. Ti-8Al-1Mo-1V was heat-treated to produce a fine-grained duplex anneal microstructure and a coarse-grained Widmanstätten microstructure resulting from a beta anneal. The two microstructural conditions for the Ti-6Al-4V were an as-received mill anneal and a beta anneal. The two cyclic frequencies were 0.1 and 5.0 Hz. Each of the four alloy/microstructure combinations studied has been the subject of prior investigation regarding fatigue crack growth rate/microstructure interactions in ambient air environments. For both alloys, crack growth rates in air were found to be significantly reduced as a result of microstructural modifications associated with the beta anneal heat treatment. Although the salt water environment significantly accelerated crack growth rates for both alloys, this same ranking of fatigue crack growth resistance persisted in the present study. Both microstructures of the Ti-6Al-4V alloy exhibited a frequency crossover effect; in contrast, no significant frequency effects were observed in Ti-8Al-1Mo-1V in either microstructure. Similar frequency effects were seen in separate specimens cycled at a single constant frequency or in single specimens cycled at two alternating frequencies. Out-of-plane cracking was observed in both alloys in the beta-annealed condition. The effects of varying degrees of out-of-plane cracking on apparent crack growth rates are noted.

Book LaQue s Handbook of Marine Corrosion

Download or read book LaQue s Handbook of Marine Corrosion written by David A. Shifler and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2022-07-13 with total page 756 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The new edition of LaQue's classic text on marine corrosion, providing fully updated control engineering practices and applications Extensively updated throughout, the second edition of La Que's Handbook of Marine Corrosion remains the standard single-source reference on the unique nature of seawater as a corrosive environment. Designed to help readers reduce operational and life cycle costs for materials in marine environments, this authoritative resource provides clear guidance on design, materials selection, and implementation of corrosion control engineering practices for materials in atmospheric, immersion, or wetted marine environments. Completely rewritten for the 21st century, this new edition reflects current environmental regulations, best practices, materials, and processes, with special emphasis placed on the engineering, behavior, and practical applications of materials. Divided into three parts, the book first explains the fundamentals of corrosion in marine environments, including atmospheric corrosion, erosion, microbiological corrosion, fatigue, environmental cracking, and cathodic delamination. The second part discusses corrosion control methods and materials selection that can mitigate or eliminate corrosion in different marine environments. The third section provides the reader with specific applications of corrosion engineering to structures, systems, or components that exist in marine environments. This much-needed new edition: Presents a comprehensive and up-to-date account of the science and engineering aspects of marine corrosion Focuses on engineering aspects, descriptive behavior, and practical applications of materials usage in marine environments Addresses the various materials used in marine environments, including metals, polymers, alloys, coatings, and composites Incorporates current regulations, standards, and recommended practices of numerous organizations such as ASTM International, the US Navy, the American Bureau of Shipping, the International Organization for Standardization, and the International Maritime Organization Written in a clear and understandable style, La Que's Handbook of Marine Corrosion, Second Edition is an indispensable resource for engineers and materials scientists in disciplines spanning the naval, maritime, commercial, shipping industries, particularly corrosion engineers, ship designers, naval architects, marine engineers, oceanographers, and other professionals involved with products that operate in marine environments.

Book Fretting Wear in Titanium Monel 400 and Cobalt

Download or read book Fretting Wear in Titanium Monel 400 and Cobalt written by Robert C. Bill and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Damage scar volume measurements taken from like metal fretting pairs combined with scanning electron microscopy observations showed that three sequentially operating mechanisms result in the fretting of titanium, Monel-400, and cobalt - 25-percent molybdenum. Initially, adhesion and plastic deformation of the surface played an important role. This was followed after a few hundred cycles by a fatigue mechanism which produced spall-like pits in the damage scar. Finally, a combination of oxidation and abrasion by debris particles became most significant. Damage scar measurements made on several elemental metals after 600,000 fretting cycles suggested that the ratio of oxide hardness to metal hardness was a measure of the susceptibility of a metal to progressive damage by fretting.

Book Handbook of Fatigue Crack Propagation in Metallic Structures

Download or read book Handbook of Fatigue Crack Propagation in Metallic Structures written by Andrea Carpinteri and published by Elsevier Publishing Company. This book was released on 1994 with total page 980 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hardbound. The purpose of this Handbook is to provide a review of the knowledge and experiences in the field of fatigue fracture mechanics. It is well-known that engineering structures can fail due to cyclic loading. For instance, a cyclically time-varying loading reduces the structure strength and can provoke a fatigue failure consisting of three stages: (a) crack initiation (b) crack propagation and (c) catastrophic failure. Since last century many scientists have tried to understand the reasons for the above-mentioned failures and how to prevent them. This Handbook contains valuable contributions from leading experts within the international scientific community and covers many of the important problems associated with the fatigue phenomena in civil, mechanical and nuclear engineering.
