Book excerpt: Financial performance is a subjective measure of how well a firm can use assets from its primary mode of business and generate revenues. This term is also used as a general measure of a firm's overall financial health over a given period of time, and can be used to compare similar firms across the same companies or to compare companies or sectors in aggregation. A firm's performance measurement has been the subject matter of discussion for decision makers as managers, planners, economists and academic staff since long many years. Financial analysts often assess firm's production and productivity performance, profitability performance, liquidity performance, leverage performance, asset utilisation performance and growth performance. The financial performance analysis identifies the financial strengths and weaknesses of the firm by properly establishing relationships between the items of the balance sheet and profit and loss account. In this context researcher has undertaken an analysis of financial performance of pharmaceutical companies to understand how management of finance plays a crucial role in the growth. In this paper an attempt has been made to analyse the profitability position of five leading pharmaceutical companies of India with the help of mean, standard deviation, co-efficient of variation, multiple regression, and analysis of variance. The increase in profitability will not only yield greater efficiency but also improve financial performance in future. The study is conducted by taking into account of the data for five years from 2011-2012 to 2015-2016. The Pharmaceutical companies selected for study are Lupin, Wochkardt, Glenmark, Abott and Torrent. The financial performance of these companies are evaluated and found that the profitability of the selected pharmaceutical companies in India during the study period is satisfactory.

Book excerpt: Foreign direct investment (FDI) is attracted into transitional economies like India for reasons like capital, technology, international markets, and managerial skills. Extant literature has focused on studying the impact of FDI inflows on financial performance at an aggregate level ignoring the differences in state regulations in industries. Further, in the case of India, the literature is confined to analysis in specific years. In this study, we examined whether foreign ownership has any impact on financial performance of firms in India over a period of time. We have conducted a pooled cross section time series analysis of 102 Indian pharmaceutical firms for the period 1998-2005. For the analysis, we used a novel, robust method of handling missing data thus making available twenty % more information than is otherwise possible. Foreign ownership is found to have a positive and statistically significant impact on the financial performance of pharmaceutical companies in India.

Exact binomial tests, nonparametric Mann-Whitney tests and nonparametric Wilcoxon signed rank tests were performed on the collected data. The study concludes that mergers are not so effective in making a useful contribution to improving the post-merger financial performance of the selected companies.

This research adopts a systematic approach which primarily addresses the various concerns of investors to illustrate the decision-making process of the existing and future investors. Using primarily domestic transaction data, this study explores how the leading pharmaceuticals companies of Bangladesh effectively use the wide array of drug portfolios mix with appropriate branding techniques to increase their financial profit and market share simultaneously. Both SWOT analysis and Porters Five Forces Model explore the business analysis of Renata Limited in compare to Orion Pharma Limited that provides a conclusion regarding investors' decision to invest in Renata Limited. Considering the financial analysis, Renata's financial liquidity is not very satisfactory and could have been improved further if management is prudent on financial strategy settings. Findings of the business analysis indicate that Renata Limited would be a good investment choice for existing and prospective shareholders based on its opportunities for long term and short term growth and further expansion in developing the market. The results suggest that even lower liquidity coupled with higher interest borrowings can be balanced by posing positive picture to the public shareholders by returning the positive dividend to them.

A firm should ensure that it does not suffer from lack-of or excess liquidity to meet its short-term compulsions. A study of liquidity is of major importance to both the internal and the external analysts because of its close relationship with day-to-day operations of a business. The crucial part in managing working capital is required maintaining its liquidity in day-to-day operation to ensure its smooth running and meets its obligation.Hence, it is of utmost important to keep a constant eye on liquidity position of the company as without it the company cannot survive. In this paper a comparative study on the liquidity position of five leading Indian pharmaceutical companies has been done to know the liquidity position of the companies. The study covers a period of 10 years viz, 2005-2006 to 2014-2015. For the purpose of investigation purely secondary data is used. The techniques of mean, standard deviation, coefficient of variation, ratio analysis, and Motaal's ultimate rank test has been applied to analyze the data. It has been found that the liquidity position of small companies is better as compared to big ones. Moreover, low or negative working capital in some cases indicates the aggressive working capital management policy of the firms which implies minimal investment in current assets by the companies so as to derive a higher rate of return. But it has to be remembered that risk of default and bankruptcy increases when a firm adopts more aggressive working capital policies. One should remember that a negative working capital is a sign of managerial efficiency in a business with low inventory and accounts receivable (which means they operate on an almost strictly cash basis). In any other situation, it is a sign that a company may be facing bankruptcy or serious financial trouble.
