Book excerpt: The main intention of this study was to identify factors influencing Members participation in Agricultural Cooperatives in selected Multipurpose Agricultural Cooperatives in Dandi Woreda, Oromia Regional State, Ethiopia. For this study four Agricultural cooperatives were selected from the 17 similar cooperatives based on longevity of life span, mainly those formed beyond 8 years. Primary data were collected from 122 sample respondents selected by using simple random sampling. Secondary data were also used. Binary logistic regression and paired t-tests were used to analyze categorical and numerical data respectively. The logistic regression result shows that age, awareness level, access to credit, attitude and promoters support, training and education found statistically significant factors affecting members participation in cooperatives. The authors recommends that member education training and awareness have to be given in a continuous manner.

Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2012 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, , language: English, abstract: The success of any business undertaking lies greatly on an efficient management and addressing the challenges that emerge with its operations. This study entitled conducted to address the general objective "To assess the determinants of the management practices in Cooperatives". The research was conducted in Ethiopia, Oromia regional State, and west Shoa Zone. In the research process the purposive selection of Ambo Farmers’ Cooperative Union was followed by the simple random sampling to select 48 primary member Cooperatives of the Cooperative Union and 96 member respondents. Both primary and secondary data were taken for this study. Descriptive statistics such frequencies, percentages, charts, cross-tabulations were used to analyze the institutional, legal and external determinant factors affecting the management practices of Ambo Framers’ Cooperative Union. Primary data was collected from selected respondents by using semi-structured interview schedule from the members, FGD and KIIs. The secondary data was also collected to evaluate bylaw and internal bylaw of the Union and its capital strength. As a result of descriptive analysis they were leaders (BODs and a Manager) possessing the qualities of good leaders in the cooperative Union. The result of the data analysis illustrated that BODs of the Cooperative Union played their leadership roles poorly but the manager of the Cooperative Union played his leadership roles well. As a result managing the general and functional areas of the Cooperative Union found lay on the shoulder of the manager of the Cooperative Union. Binary Logistic regression model was employed to identify the Institutional and legal factors affecting the management practices of the Cooperative Union that was under the study.

Book Accelerating technical change through video mediated agricultural extension Evidence from Ethiopia

Download or read book Accelerating technical change through video mediated agricultural extension Evidence from Ethiopia written by Abate, Gashaw T. and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite a rapidly growing enthusiasm around applications of information and communications technologies (ICTs) to smallholder agriculture in developing countries, there are still many questions on the effectiveness of ICT-based approaches. This study assesses the effects of videomediated agricultural extension service provision on farmers’ knowledge and adoption of improved agricultural technologies and practices in Ethiopia. The study focuses on a program piloted by the Government of Ethiopia and Digital Green and poses three questions. First, to what extent does video-mediated extension lead to increased uptake of improved agricultural technologies and practices by smallholder farmers? Second, is video-mediated extension targeted at both spouses of the household more effective than when only targeted at the (typically male) household head? Third, how cost-effective is a video-mediated approach to extension provision? The study explores these questions with a randomized controlled trial designed to evaluate the video-mediated approach as applied to three priority crops (teff, wheat, maize) and three technologies (row planting, precise seeding rates, and urea dressing). The trial was implemented in 347 kebeles (village clusters) during the 2017 meher (rainy) season in Ethiopia’s four most agriculturally important regional states. Analysis of data from our surveys of 2,422 households and 896 extension agents indicates that the video-mediated approach is more effective than the conventional approach in achieving several key outcomes. Specifically, we find that videomediated extension reaches a wider audience than the conventional approach and leads to higher levels of agricultural knowledge and uptake of technologies in those kebeles randomly assigned to the program. While our results do point to greater participation and greater knowledge of female spouses in kebeles where both male and female spouses were targeted by the program, we do not find clear evidence that the more inclusive approach translated into higher uptake of the subject technologies and practices. Finally, we find that the video-mediated approach becomes less costly as the scale of operation increases.

Book Cooperatives for Staple Crop Marketing

Download or read book Cooperatives for Staple Crop Marketing written by Tanguy Bernard and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2010 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rural producer organizations (RPOs), such as farmers' organizations or rural cooperatives, offer a means for smallholder farmers in developing countries to sell their crops commercially. RPOs hold particular promise for Sub-Saharan Africa, where small-scale farming is the primary livelihood but commercialization of food crops is very limited. Using the experience of smallholders in Ethiopia as a case study, this research monograph identifies the benefits of RPOs for small farmers, as well as the conditions under which such organizations most successfully promote smallholder commercialization. The evidence from Ethiopia indicates that RPOs do increase farmers' profits from crop sales, but that the beneficiaries do not tend to be the poorest smallholders. Moreover, an RPO's marketing effectiveness is precarious: it can easily diminish if the number or diversity of its members increases or if it provides more non-marketing services. The authors conclude that RPOs have a role to play in the agricultural development of Sub-Saharan Africa, but that role should be complemented by other programs that directly target the poorest farmers. Further, the effectiveness of RPOs should be preserved by allowing them to follow their own agendas rather than being encouraged to take on non-marketing activities. The assessment of RPOs presented in this monograph should be a valuable resource for policymakers and researchers concerned with economic development and poverty reduction in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Book Agricultural Cooperatives

Download or read book Agricultural Cooperatives written by Glynn McBride and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The genesis of this book dates back a number of years to an annual meeting of the American Institute of Cooperation. Cooperative leaders at that meeting openly expressed their feelings that they would like a much stronger commitment on the part of our land grant universities in particular and other educational institutions in general to creating a greater understanding of cooperatives and their role in our economy. Since I was in agreement with this position, the course in general group action which I was teaching was changed to emphasize the role of agricultural cooperatives. The need for a textbook designed to help in this emphasis became apparent. This book is the culmination of an effort to meet that need. This book has been prepared with the student and instructor in mind. It is based upon experience gained from many years of interaction with students in a classroom setting, in discussions with them after class hours, and after they had finished their degree requirements and had taken positions in jndustry, government, or elsewhere. While objectives of the book have remained relatively unchanged over time, the sub stance and format as means of meeting those objectives have changed from time to time as a result of these contacts and discussions. The input xiv Preface xv of students over the years as reflected in this product is gratefully acknowledged.
