Book Analysis of Controller pilot Voice Communications from Kansas City Air Route Traffic Control Center

Download or read book Analysis of Controller pilot Voice Communications from Kansas City Air Route Traffic Control Center written by Tracy Lennertz and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The implementation of Controller Pilot Datalink Communications (CPDLC) in domestic en route airspace is a key enabling technology in the Next Generation Air Transportation System. The Federal Aviation Administration plans to implement en route CPDLC in 2019 in Kansas City Air Route Traffic Control Center (ZKC). Here, we examined routine controller-pilot communication in ZKC airspace to provide insights into anticipated benefits of CPDLC implementation and to inform a baseline of communication measures to be used for a post-implementation comparison. While the realized benefits will depend on the level of equipage and actual implementation, these findings highlight some of the anticipated benefits of CPDLC implementation. The analysis showed that frequency changes due to transfer of communications were the largest category of pilot and controller transmissions and the majority of readback errors. The second most common controller instruction was an altitude change. Both of these can be conveyed via CPDLC in the initial en route implementation. Using CPDLC for the most common transmissions will reduce frequency congestion, allowing more time for users to access the frequency and reducing the probability of step-ons and blocked transmissions.

Book Loss of Controller pilot Voice Communications in Domestic en Route Airspace

Download or read book Loss of Controller pilot Voice Communications in Domestic en Route Airspace written by Cardosi Kim and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Abstract: With the planned implementation of Controller‐Pilot Data Link Communications (CPDLC) in en route airspace, information on voice communication performance in this airspace can help to predict specific benefits associated with CPDLC, identify adjustments in equipment or procedures in early implementation, and demonstrate that planned benefits have been achieved. This paper examines existing data on losses of communication between controllers and pilots in the en route environment in anticipation of the implementation of CPDLC. Of particular interest was communication performance with air carrier aircraft, since they are most likely to be equipped with CPDLC for en route ATC communications. One thousand, three hundred and fifteen relevant Mandatory Occurrence Reports (MORs) in domestic airspace at Air Route Traffic Control Centers between March 1, 2014 and October 1, 2014 were examined The times reported for loss of communication ranged from 1 to 235 minutes (Mean = 21 minutes, SD = 19 min, Median = 15 minutes). There were also three losses of standard separation with terrain and seven losses of standard separation between aircraft associated with the controllers’ inability to contact an aircraft. Additional refined measures of communication parameters should be examined to further establish baseline performance and assess the benefits of CPDLC."--Technical report documentation page.

Book Misunderstandings in ATC Communication

Download or read book Misunderstandings in ATC Communication written by Immanuel Barshi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-22 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Effective radio communication between ATC and pilots has long been recognized as an important element of aviation safety. In recognition of the role miscommunications play in aviation incidents and accidents, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) recently introduced language proficiency requirements for all flight personnel in all ICAO member states. Using an effective and economical experimental paradigm, the research described here teases apart the complex combination of factors (e.g. speech rate, controller message length, English language proficiency, cognitive workload) believed to contribute to miscommunications between controllers and pilots. Misunderstandings in ATC Communication offers an in-depth report of a seminal study in aviation communication, which until now has only been available in the form of an unpublished dissertation. In addition, it offers a recent extension of that work, the authors’ reflections on the research process, and a thorough review of the aviation communication literature. Graduate students and researchers who wish to address real-world problems will appreciate the simple elegance of the experimental paradigm that has been used to address a wide range of theoretical and applied interdisciplinary research questions. The book will appeal to scholars in the fields of human factors, linguistics, cognitive psychology, applied linguistics and second-language education and assessment. It is also of direct relevance to government and industry decision-makers and operators as they strive to implement the ICAO requirements, and to improve aviation safety.

Book Rail Human Factors

Download or read book Rail Human Factors written by Ann Mills and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 603 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, for reasons connected to the organization of the industry, technical developments, and major safety concerns, rail human factors has grown in importance at an international level. Despite its importance, however, supporting literature has been largely restricted to specialist journal publications and technical reports. Rail Human Factors addresses this imbalance by providing the first fully comprehensive overview of the area. The volume includes contributions from leading ergonomists, psychologists, sociologists, management scientists and engineers whose common theme is to investigate, understand and design for people on the railways, including staff, passengers and the general public. Every area of ergonomics/human factors is covered: physical design of work and equipment in maintenance; cognitive ergonomics in driving, signalling and control; organizational and social ergonomics in the way teams are formed, plans are made and organizations are structured and run. Topics covered include: ? Systems views of rail human factors ? Driver models and performance ? Train and cab design ? Network and train control systems, including ERTMS ? Signals and signal ? SPADS ? Signalling and control center design ? Signaller performance ? Control center interfaces ? Workload, situation awareness, team working ? Human error and reliability ? Timetabling and planning ? Maintenance planning and work ? Safety climate and safety culture ? Passenger comfort and behaviour ? Station design ? Public information systems ? Level crossings ? Trespass and vandalism ? Ergonomics standards and guidelines ? Human Factors integration The book is the definitive guide for all those concerned with making railways safer, more

Book Human Factors Impacts in Air Traffic Management

Download or read book Human Factors Impacts in Air Traffic Management written by Mark Rodgers and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In research and application of Human Factors in Air Traffic Management (ATM) systems design, development and operation, there remains a lack of clarity regarding the range and integration of activities associated with the need for greater attention to issues such as human error, interface design and teamwork, especially in systems with increased levels of automation. This book seeks to redress this situation by presenting case studies of human factors applications in which there is demonstrable success in terms of improvement in operational systems. Individual examples are used to outline how each human factors study evolved, what it entailed, how it was resourced and how the results contributed to operational performance. Case studies include training methods, human error, team resource management, situation assessment, terminal automation replacement systems, collaborative decision-making to improve the effectiveness of traffic-flow management and the role of human factors in ATM.
