Download or read book Cultivating Science Harvesting Power written by Christopher R. Henke and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2008-08-22 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How agricultural scientists and growers in California have cooperated—and struggled—in shaping the state's multi-billion-dollar farm industry. Just south of San Francisco lies California's Salinas Valley, the heart of a multi-billion dollar agricultural industry that dominates U. S. vegetable production. How did the sleepy valley described in the stories of John Steinbeck become the nation's “salad bowl”? In Cultivating Science, Harvesting Power, Christopher R. Henke explores the ways that science helped build the Salinas Valley and California's broader farm industry. Henke focuses on the case of University of California “farm advisors,” scientists stationed in counties throughout the state who have stepped forward to help growers deal with crises ranging from labor shortages to plagues of insects. These disruptions in what Henke terms industrial agriculture's “ecology of power” provide a window onto how agricultural scientists and growers have collaborated—and struggled—in shaping this industry. Through these interventions, Henke argues, science has served as a mechanism of repair for industrial agriculture. Basing his analysis on detailed ethnographic and historical research, Henke examines the history of state-sponsored farm advising—in particular, its roots in Progressive Era politics—and looks at both past and present practices by farm advisors in the Salinas Valley. He goes on to examine specific examples, including the resolution of a farm labor crisis during World War II at the Spreckels Sugar Company, the use of field trials for promoting new farming practices, and farm advisors' and growers' responses to environmental issues. Beyond this, Henke argues that the concept of repair is broadly applicable to other cases and that expertise can be deployed more generally to encourage change for the future of American agriculture.

Book excerpt: "Cows send out signals continuously about their health, well-being, nutrition, and production. The challenge for the dairy farmer is how to interpret these signals and use them. Dutch vet and cow enthusiast Jan Hulsen has drawn on his expertise and wide experience of cows and dairy farmers to write Cow Signals: a richly illustrated farmer's guide on how to interpret the behaviour, posture and physical characteristics of groups of cows and individual animals. When observing cows it is important not to jump to conclusions immediately, but instead always to ask yourself three questions: What do I see? Why has this happened? What does this mean? If you know what to look for, you can pick up the signals everywhere and any time. Cow Signals will show you how"--Back cover note.

Download or read book Principles of Multivariate Analysis written by Wojtek Krzanowski and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2000-09-28 with total page 609 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an introduction to the principles and methodology of modern multivariate statistical analysis. It is written for the user and potential user of multivariate techniques as well as for students coming to the subject for the first time. The author's emphasis is problem-orientated and he is at pains to stress geometrical intuition in preference to algebraic manipulation. Mathematical sections that are not essential for a practical understanding of the techniques are clearly indicated so that they may be skipped by the non-specialist. Discrete and mixed variable techniques are presented as well as continuous variable techniques to give a comprehensive coverage of the subject. This updated edition includes a new appendix which traces developments that have taken place in the years since the publication of the first edition and which clarifies some issues raised by readers of the original text. References to about 60 recent books and articles supplement the material in this appendix. Overall, this volume provides an up-to-date and readable practical account of the subject, both for students of statistics and for research workers in subjects as diverse as anthropology, education, industry, medicine and taxonomy. The new edition includes a survey of the most recent developments in the subject.
Download or read book A Realist Approach for Qualitative Research written by Joseph A. Maxwell and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2012 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are cultural and material phenomena equally real? How can one study the relationships between cultural constructions, social behavior and material conditions and draw a valid conclusion from the data? In contrast to interpretive or constructivist positions, realism supports the insights of critical theory in social and educational research regarding the relationships between actors' perspectives and their actual situations, while avoiding the epistemological objectivism associated with positivism and some forms of post- positivist empiricism. This book will explain how readers can use realism to conceptualize and conduct their qualitative study to get results with greater validity.
