The results indicate that the slipstream dynamic pressure along the ground, some distance from the center of rotation, is not a function of disk loading but merely a function of the gross weight or thrust of the aircraft. Furthermore, for a given gross weight the thickness of this is out-ward flowing sheet of air is less for a small-diameter propeller (higher disk loading propeller).

Book excerpt: An experimental investigation was made of the variation of average induced flwo around a model helicopter during transition from hovering flight to steady autorotative vertical descent. Test data were obtained from simulated power failures under many different conditions. Results are summarized for variation in disk loading, blade angles, and pitch-change rate and "effective induced velocities" calculated for the varios conditions are presented. Comparisons of theoretical and experimental data indicate that conditions peculiar to vertical descent in the transition range cause variations in performance not predicted by the theoretical analysis.

Book excerpt: Development of advanced rotorcraft configurations has highlighted a need for high-quality experimental data to support the development of flexible and accurate analytical design tools. To provide this type of data, a test program was conducted in the Langley 14- by 22-Foot Subsonic Tunnel to measure the flow near the empennage of a 15-percent scale powered helicopter model with an operating tail fan. Three-component velocity profiles were measured with laser velocimetry (LV) one chord forward of the horizontal tail for four advance ratios to evaluate the effect of the rotor wake impingement on the horizontal tail angle of attack. These velocity data indicate the horizontal tail can experience unsteady angle of attack variations of over 30 degress due to the rotor wake influence. The horizontal tail is most affected by the rotor wake above advance ratios of 0.10. Velocity measurements of the flow on the inlet side of the tail fan were made for a low-speed flight condition using conventional LV techniques. The velocity data show an accelerated flow near the tail fan duct, and vorticity calculations track the passage of main rotor wake vortices through the measurement plane.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A method is presented for the calculation of rotor downwash in hovering and vertical flight. The blade is represented by a lifting line. The rotor wake is simulated by a vortex sheet and a series of rolled-up root and tip vortices, similar in form to that of a classical fixed-wing. The concept of rectangularization of the rotor wake is used in obtaining a formula for the normal component of induced velocity. Wake contraction based on experimental data is introduced into the calculations. Numerical calculations have been performed for two rotor configurations, viz. S.58, and a model rotor. Computed induced velocities and blade loadings are compared with the available flight data. The comparison shows the present simple method yields satisfactory results. (Author).
