This book was released on 1995 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report reviews Alberta health records for prior documentation of waterborne diseases that could be attributed to drinking water within the Peace-Athabasca and Slave river basins. The report first presents a review of waterborne disease transmission and pathogens and then examines the health records and discusses the incidences of the waterborne diseases identified. The appendix contains tables of notifiable disease statistics for potentially waterborne and/or foodborne diseases, as well as a summary of the water supply infrastructure of major communities in the northern river basin area of Alberta.

Book Assessment of Drinking Water Quality in the Northern River Basins Study Area

Download or read book Assessment of Drinking Water Quality in the Northern River Basins Study Area written by Tanya Faye Armstrong and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The NTBS was designed to address the ecological concerns about pulp mill expansion, and to increase scientific knowledge about environmental conditions [ecology, ecosystem sustainability, water pollution and control, habitat, effect on fish and fishing, etc.] in the major river systems of the north. The study's objectives were to gather and interpret sound scientific information about the basins, develop appropriate recommendations for basin management, and communicate effectively with the public. The government response report confirms the governments' commitment to ecosystem sustainability and to pollution control in northern rivers. First Nations and Metis aboriginal [native] peoples contributed significantly to the NRBS.

Book Global Issues in Water Sanitation and Health

Download or read book Global Issues in Water Sanitation and Health written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2009-10-25 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the human population grows-tripling in the past century while, simultaneously, quadrupling its demand for water-Earth's finite freshwater supplies are increasingly strained, and also increasingly contaminated by domestic, agricultural, and industrial wastes. Today, approximately one-third of the world's population lives in areas with scarce water resources. Nearly one billion people currently lack access to an adequate water supply, and more than twice as many lack access to basic sanitation services. It is projected that by 2025 water scarcity will affect nearly two-thirds of all people on the planet. Recognizing that water availability, water quality, and sanitation are fundamental issues underlying infectious disease emergence and spread, the Institute of Medicine held a two-day public workshop, summarized in this volume. Through invited presentations and discussions, participants explored global and local connections between water, sanitation, and health; the spectrum of water-related disease transmission processes as they inform intervention design; lessons learned from water-related disease outbreaks; vulnerabilities in water and sanitation infrastructure in both industrialized and developing countries; and opportunities to improve water and sanitation infrastructure so as to reduce the risk of water-related infectious disease.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The people of the Northern River Basins Study Area are fortunate to live in a beautiful environment and to be among the healthiest people. When compared to other parts of the world, the environment they live in has not generally put them at great risks to their health. A substantial proportion of the local people, however, are concerned about the subtle link between the state of their environment and diseases such as, cancer, diabetes, heart problems, diarrhea, asthma, and other health problems in their communities'--Introduction.
