This book was released on 2008-11-17 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tests a golfer faces on the course are the direct result of the challenges originally faced by the golf course architect, whether they be complicated terrain, forces of nature, budget limitations, demanding developers, or the difficult task of balancing the practical scientific needs of a golf course with the architect’s creative instincts. Secrets of the Great Golf Course Architects offers readers behind-the-scenes tales from America’s master architects themselves in their own words. Elite designers such as Tom Fazio, Jack Nicklaus, Pete Dye, Rees Jones, Robert Trent Jones Jr., Arthur Hills, Arnold Palmer, and others share their personal anecdotes related to the creation of some of the world’s most famous courses: from run-ins with snakes to bulldozers sinking in quicksand, to holes created by accident, such as the famed island green 17th at the TPC at Sawgrass. Published in collaboration with the prestigious American Society of Golf Course Architects, Secrets of the Great Golf Course Architects includes more than 150 beautiful full-color photographs and dozens of drawings and course blueprints, making this a first of its kind insider’s look at golf course architecture sure to become a key addition to the libraries of all golfers with an appreciation for the courses they play.

Book Architectural Glass to Resist Seismic and Extreme Climatic Events

Download or read book Architectural Glass to Resist Seismic and Extreme Climatic Events written by Richard A. Behr and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2009-09-14 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Glass is a popular cladding material for modern buildings. The trend for steel-framed, glass-clad buildings instead of those using traditional materials such as brick and concrete has inherent problems. These include, for example, the performance of architectural glass in extreme climatic events such as windstorms and heavy snow loads and also during earthquakes. This book reviews the state-of-the-art in glass and glazing technology to resist failure due to these natural events.Building code seismic requirements for architectural glass in the United States are considered first of all, followed by a chapter on glazing and curtain wall systems to resist earthquakes. The next two chapters discuss snow loads on building envelopes and glazing systems, and types and design of glazing systems to resist snow loads. Wind pressures and the impact of wind-borne debris are then considered in the next group of chapters which also review special types of glazing systems to resist windstorms. A final chapter reviews test methods for the performance of glazing systems during earthquakes and extreme climatic events. With its distinguished editor and team of contributors, Architectural glass to resist seismic and extreme climatic events is an essential resource for architects, structural, civil and architectural engineers, researchers and those involved in designing and specifying building glazing and cladding materials in areas where severe windstorms, snow and earthquakes are a threat. - Considers the state of the art in glass and glazing technology to resist failure due to extreme climatic events - Reviews specific building techniques and test methods to enhance glazing performance during snow storms, wind storms and earthquakes

Book The Programming of the Jewell Golf and Country Club

Download or read book The Programming of the Jewell Golf and Country Club written by Beau Ashley Fey and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis is about the design-build project that was completed in spring semester 2005. It was initiated by five graduate students and Professor Bruce Bassler. This thesis covers the pre-design programming of the design-build project, which was a clubhouse for the Jewell Golf and Country Club in Jewell, Iowa. This design-build project brought to the forefront the notion that there are two distinct schools of thought when it comes to programming: the rigid data driven "assembly line" end versus the nebulous, emotive, "What does a building want to be?" end. As the programming was completed for this project, we pulled from these two schools of thought and landed somewhere in the middle, which is a direct by-product of out education in Architecture from Iowa State University. In my thesis, I describe this programming process, during which at various points I felt conflicted and pulled in different directions. The main point of conflict being that the Board of Jewell Golf and Country Club was primarily interested in the spaces they perceived they needed, not programming, while the design group wanted to explore the program more fully so that the space we designed had meaning. This thesis outlines the two schools of thought that we pulled from, the conflict that happened throughout, and the ultimate program of the project.

Book Contextual Materiality

    Book Details:
  • Author : JaDee Jean Goehring
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2005
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 90 pages

Download or read book Contextual Materiality written by JaDee Jean Goehring and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In any design process, materials affect every aspect of the final project, ranging from functional elements and key structural components to the overall aesthetics and determining final cost. Through this thesis, I will show that a material palette rich in the architectural character of a rural community, specifically the town of Jewell, Iowa, is enough to maintain a link to the historical and current surrounding context no matter what new formal expressions are introduced throughout the design. In the spring of 2004, five graduate students in architecture from Iowa State University at Ames proposed an idea for a design/build project to be completed the following year. Students from Iowa Central Community College Building Trades Program in Fort Dodge were approached to be a part of the project. There was a blending of ideas and a project in a small, rural community centrally located between the two schools was considered. The Jewell Area Development Enterprise (JADE) was approached to see if any projects were needed in that locale. Upon meeting with JADE the idea of a golf clubhouse/community center was suggested. The board members of the Jewell Golf and Country Club were approached to see if they would consider a new clubhouse/community center designed and built by a group of students from Iowa State and Iowa Central Community College under the auspices of Bruce Bassler of Iowa State University and Bill McAnally from Iowa Central Community College. The building is set for completion in May 2005.

Book The New Law and Economic Development

Download or read book The New Law and Economic Development written by David M. Trubek and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-08-21 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of essays that identify and analyze a new phase in thinking about the role of law in economic development and in the practices of development agencies that support law reform. The authors trace the history of theory and doctrine in this field, relating it to changing ideas about development and its institutional practices. The essays describe a new phase in thinking about the relation between law and economic development and analyze how this rising consensus differs from previous efforts to use law as an instrument to achieve social and economic progress. In analyzing the current phase, these essays also identify tensions and contradictions in current practice. This work is a comprehensive treatment of this emerging paradigm, situating it within the intellectual and historical framework of the most influential development models since World War II.
