Book An Alternative Propulsion Plant for Naval Auxiliary Ships

Download or read book An Alternative Propulsion Plant for Naval Auxiliary Ships written by Edward Lawrence Stone and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to the rising fuel cost, marine engineers and ship operators alike are searching for more fuel efficient propulsion plants to power ocean-going vessels. This thesis describes an alternative propulsion plant for the U.S. Navy's newest fleet oiler, the AO-177, in order to solve the problem of rising fuel costs. An analysis of converting the present geared steam turbine propulsion plant is performed, and the economic benefits of such a conversion are examined. The results of this analysis show that it is feasible to convert the AO-177 class fleet oiler to a diesel powered vessel provided that the conversion is performed prior to the end of the ship's third year of life. Two candidate diesel plants were studied with the most economical plant being selected for use in the conversion. (Author).

Book Ship Resistance and Propulsion

Download or read book Ship Resistance and Propulsion written by Anthony F. Molland and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-08-17 with total page 627 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second edition provides a comprehensive and scientific approach to evaluating ship resistance and propulsion. Written by experts in the field, it includes the latest developments in CFD, experimental techniques and guidance for the practical estimation of ship propulsive power. It addresses improvements in energy efficiency and reduced emissions, and the introduction of the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI). Descriptions have now been included of pump jets, rim driven propulsors, shape adaptive foils, propeller noise and dynamic positioning. Trial procedures have been updated, and preliminary estimates of power for hydrofoil craft, submarines and AUVs are incorporated. Standard series data for hull resistance and propeller performance are included, enabling practitioners to make ship power predictions based on material and data within the book. Numerous fully worked examples illustrate applications for most ship and small craft types, making this book ideal for practising engineers, naval architects, marine engineers and undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Book Naval Mechanical Engineering

Download or read book Naval Mechanical Engineering written by Tanya D. Zapata and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2019-08-25 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Naval Mechanical Engineering: Gas Turbine Propulsion, Auxiliary, and Engineering Support Systems is a technical publication for professional engineers to assist in understanding various ships auxiliary systems. You will learn how they are applied to the overall propulsion plant and how the pumps and valves are used in the systems. Since the auxiliary systems vary between ship types, you will learn the systems in general terms. The maintenance and upkeep of the auxiliary systems are extremely important since, without them, the main engines would not be able to operate. You will be presented with some of the various factors that affect gas turbine performance, procedures for engine changeout, and power train inspection. In conclusion, you will learn a few of the maintenance, operating problems, and repair of pneumatic systems, low-pressure air compressors (LPAC), hydraulic systems, pumps, valves, heat exchangers, and purifiers. Proper maintenance or repair work consists of problem diagnosis, disassembly, measurements, corrections of problems, and reassembly. Use of proper tools, knowledge of the construction of equipment, proper work site management, and cleanliness are keys to successful maintenance and repair work.
