Download or read book Materials for Learning written by Janet Jenkins and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-12-22 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Materials for Learning (1981) examines the ability of books and broadcasts to change lives. The combination of print, radio, television and group meetings – distance teaching – can transform education in developing countries. Effective distance teaching requires effective teaching materials, and up to now there has been a lack of guidance about how to produce such materials and how to do so for different cultures. Materials for Learning aims to supply this need by suggesting guidelines for action and, where evidence is mixed or lacking, defining questions that still require answers. It is a practical book aimed at people actively involved in nonformal education and will be particularly useful for the developing world educators. The book looks first at how distance teaching can help with educational problems, considers how adults learn, and surveys problems of language and culture. It then considers the planning of distance teaching and looks in detail at the use of different media. There were also chapters on teaching numeracy and science at a distance, and a discussion of the kind of support that can be provided for people studying at a distance.

The survey covered 120,000 households and a thousand schools spread over 91 districts in eight states.Written by leading educational economists, the original essays in this volume- analyse the major cost and financing issues in elementary schooling in seven of the eight states surveyed--Assam, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal;- identify recent initiatives made by the governments of these seven states;- systematically scrutinise the pattern of the public spending in elementary education;- examine enrolment in government schools and the quality of education that they impart;- study household expenditure on schooling--the costs to parents of sending children to school; and- compare government schools with private schools, showing how the private sector has began to take over the what should be the responsibility of the government, particularly in the poorer states.
Download or read book Modern English Society written by Judith Ryder and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-01-01 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1970, Modern English Society is primarily concerned with the period since the Great Exhibition of 1851. Judith Ryder and Harold Silver begin by surveying the consequences, good and ill, of industrialization, and go on to explore the changing pattern of social relationships to which it gave rise. They discuss such topics as the growth of towns and of large-scale administration, the development of welfare services, the emergence of mass politics, the mass media and mass production. They show how social attitudes, and the interpretation of historical facts are colored by our ideological views. In the second half of the book, they examine the structure and functioning of contemporary social institutions – the family, education, the economic and political systems – and assess their implications for the individual, for specific social groups, and for society as a whole. This book will be of interest to students of history and sociology.

Here are sound reasons why targeting funds to educate girls and women can yield the best investment returns in the developing world and provide enormous economic benefits. The discussion explains how such funding can reduce environmental pollution, fertility rates, and female mortality and help prevent the spread of AIDS. It describes an entrenched cultural tradition that denies girls an education and keeps them from contributing economically to their families and their countries. A low-cost strategy to educate more women and girls worldwide is presented, along with examples of successful education programs in many developing nations.

Download or read book Gender and Social Equity in Primary Education written by Vimala Ramachandran and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2004-08-19 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, India has made impressive strides in increasing literacy rates and in enabling access to education. The country now seems well set to provide universal and good quality basic education. Yet, behind this otherwise rosy picture lie serious concerns relating primarily to gender and equity. /-//-/This volume provides an insightful understanding of the ground realities of primary education programmes, particularly those run by the District Primary Education Programme (DPEP). Combining secondary research with field studies conducted in six states, the contributors explore gender and social equity issues in primary education. They conclude that there is a subtle but nevertheless discernible ‘hierarchy of access’ to education, which has resulted in new forms of segregation in primary schools.
