E. C. Belmonte, m.a., LL.D. (leyden), Advocate, then practising in the Courts of this Colony, I learnt in the course of my study that there were up to that time - with the exception of the few hereinafter mentioned - no systematical Law Reports or Digest of reported written decisions of the several Courts of Justice of this Colony. Besides the study of the theoretical knowledge of the procedure here prevailing, I was also advised and strongly recommended by my said tutor to undertake the study of the practical part of the said procedure by reading the written reasons of decisions of the Courts in cases here decided, so far as they were reported and could be obtained.
