Book Alligators Freight Trains Near Flying Disasters

Download or read book Alligators Freight Trains Near Flying Disasters written by Ray Madden and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2009-02 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Down through the years with my unusual amount of engine failures, over 18, most pilots with total engine failures usually died. Also, how many 16 year old teenagers have thumbed and hopped the freight trains to see the states from coast to coast and border to border, starting with a twenty dollar bill? Not only is this an interesting, fun read, but it has some simple rules that help to keep pilots in general aviation alive, even the best. Before retiring from the airline, I met a flight instructor that had instructed at the same airport in Monroeville years before. He was an excellent pilot. He told me he was ferrying airplanes all over the world, even single engine aircraft. I was amazed that he would fly over the ocean to reach some of the countries with a single engine airplane. The last thing I asked him, "What will you do if the engine quits?" He just laughed. A few years later his picture was on the front page of a Pittsburgh newspaper. He was flying near the Canary Islands and his engine quit. They never found him. So, if you have any pilot friends, you may want to give them a copy of this book if only to read the chapter on, "Staying Alive".

Book excerpt: A modern day gay Lolita, The Pelican Fables is a poetic and provocatively written coming-of-age story that confronts the burgeoning sexuality of a young man in his last year of prep school. Adam Proffit is torn apart by his longstanding, highly concealed crush on his roommate of two years, Kellum Thurman, and the newly arrived faculty member, Carter Moran, whom Adam believes may share his attraction. But within the conservatively charged atmosphere of the Melbourne School, acting upon any of his sexual impulses presents a dangerous proposition that could jeopardize Adam's existence at Melbourne and destroy the future for which he has worked so long and hard. But keeping his feelings hidden poses perhaps an even graver and more devastating challenge. Adam must either come to terms with his sexuality or find the emerging self within him destroyed. Uplifting and surprising, The Pelican Fables will keep you wondering until the very last page.

Download or read book A Wetland Biography written by Gay M. Gomez and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2010-07-05 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Louisiana's Chenier Plain is a 2,200-square-mile region of marshes and oak-covered ridges (cheniers) that stretches along the Gulf of Mexico from Sabine Lake to Vermilion Bay. Its inhabitants, some 6,000 people of Cajun and other ancestries, retain strong economic and cultural ties to the land and its teeming wildlife. They call it paradise...but it is a vulnerable paradise. In this multifaceted study, Gay Gomez explores the interaction of the land, people, and wildlife of the Chenier Plain, revealing both the uniqueness of the region and the challenges it faces. After describing the geography and history of the Chenier Plain, Gomez turns to the lifeways of its people. Drawing on their words and stories, she tells how the chenier dwellers combine modern occupations with traditional pursuits such as alligator and waterfowl hunting, fur trapping, and fishing. She shows how these traditions of wildlife use provide both economic incentives for conservation and a source of personal and place identity. This portrait of a "working wetland" reveals how wildlife use and appreciation can give rise to a stewardship that balances biological, economic, and cultural concerns in species and habitat protection.
