Book A Levenberg Marquardt Method for Large scale Bound constrained Nonlinear Least squares

Download or read book A Levenberg Marquardt Method for Large scale Bound constrained Nonlinear Least squares written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The well known Levenberg-Marquardt method is used extensively for solving nonlinear least-squares problems. We describe an extension of the Levenberg- Marquardt method to problems with bound constraints on the variables. Each iteration of our algorithm approximately solves a linear least-squares problem subject to the original bound constraints. Our approach is especially suited to large-scale problems whose functions are expensive to compute; only matrix-vector products with the Jacobian are required. We present the results of numerical experiments that illustrate the effectiveness of the approach. Moreover, we describe its application to a practical curve fitting problem in fluorescence optical imaging.

Book Numerical Algorithms for Nonlinearly Constrained Optimization

Download or read book Numerical Algorithms for Nonlinearly Constrained Optimization written by Michael Thomas Heath and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation is concerned with the development and numerical implementation of algorithms for solving finite dimensional optimization problems. Special emphasis is given to robustness, by which is meant the ability of an algorithm to cope with adverse circumstances, whether due to pathologies of a particular problem or to the shortcomings of finite precision computer arithmetic. A uniform framework is developed in which a common set of techniques may be applied to all of the standard problems of optimization. The algorithms are based on Newton-like methods implemented in a robust manner by means of hybrid, curved line searches and stable linear algebra techniques. Developed first in the context of systems of nonlinear equations, nonlinear least squares, and unconstrained minimization, the algorithms are combined and extended to include problems with equality or inequality constraints. Constrained problems are handled by means of separate line searches in the range and null spaces of the matrix of constraint normals. The classical Lagrangian is modified to allow the same Newton-like methods to be applied to inequality constraints. Test results are presented which show the validity and promise of the methods developed in this dissertation. (Author).

Book Introduction to Nonlinear Optimization

Download or read book Introduction to Nonlinear Optimization written by Amir Beck and published by SIAM. This book was released on 2014-10-27 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides the foundations of the theory of nonlinear optimization as well as some related algorithms and presents a variety of applications from diverse areas of applied sciences. The author combines three pillars of optimization?theoretical and algorithmic foundation, familiarity with various applications, and the ability to apply the theory and algorithms on actual problems?and rigorously and gradually builds the connection between theory, algorithms, applications, and implementation. Readers will find more than 170 theoretical, algorithmic, and numerical exercises that deepen and enhance the reader's understanding of the topics. The author includes offers several subjects not typically found in optimization books?for example, optimality conditions in sparsity-constrained optimization, hidden convexity, and total least squares. The book also offers a large number of applications discussed theoretically and algorithmically, such as circle fitting, Chebyshev center, the Fermat?Weber problem, denoising, clustering, total least squares, and orthogonal regression and theoretical and algorithmic topics demonstrated by the MATLAB? toolbox CVX and a package of m-files that is posted on the book?s web site.

Book Algorithms for Nonlinear Least squares Problems

Download or read book Algorithms for Nonlinear Least squares Problems written by Stanford University Center for Large Scale Scientific Computation and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: "This paper addresses the nonlinear least-squares problem min [formula], where f(x) is a vector in [symbol] whose components are smooth nonlinear functions. The problem arises most often in data fitting applications. Much research has focused on the development of specialized algorithms that attempt to exploit the structure of the nonlinear least-squares objective. We survey numerical methods developed for problems in which sparsity in the derivatives of f is not taken into account in formulationg algorithms."

Book Constrained Nonlinear Least Squares

Download or read book Constrained Nonlinear Least Squares written by George E. P. Box and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The method of least squares is widely used for the fitting of data of functions containing unknown parameters. When these functions are non-linear in the parameters an iterative approach using successive local linearizations was suggested by Gauss. To encourage convergence various modifications and alternatives have been suggested. It has been proposed that, at the early stages, use of the method of steepest descent might speed convergence. A method might be used in which changes were made in the direction of, but not of the magnitude of, the Gauss adjustment. It is convenient to call this the Gauss direction method. Levenberg and later Marquardt proposed a spherically constrained procedure. The procedure could be made scale-invariant to render its behavior independent of the (arbitrary) units in which the parameters were measured. It was argued the resulting method offered an appropriate compromise between steepest descent and Gauss's method. In this report some of the geometry of these methods is discussed. As a consequence it is argued that the procedure should also be made invariant under linear transformation. With this modification the scale-invariant Levenberg-Marquardt method becomes inappropriate and the steepest descent direction and the Gauss direction method identical. It remains, therefore, to determine how far along the Gauss direction one should proceed. Two alternative methods for deciding this are suggested. Both methods use quantities already available from previous calculations.
