Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Debbie Macomber brings us to the Alaskan wilderness for a magical Christmas tale about finding love where it’s least expected. “Picture-perfect . . . this charmer will please Macomber fans and newcomers alike.”—Publishers Weekly Before beginning her dream job as sous chef in one of Seattle’s hottest new restaurants, Josie Avery takes a summer position cooking at a lakeside lodge in the remote Alaskan town of Ponder. Josie falls for the rustic charms of the local community—including Jack Corcoran, the crotchety keeper of Ponder’s famed sourdough starter, and, in particular, the quiet and intense Palmer Saxon, a famed master swordsmith. Josie and Palmer become close during the long Alaskan summer days, but Josie knows that, come fall, she’ll be returning to reality and the career she’s worked so hard for. Palmer, on the other hand, would like nothing better than to make Josie his wife and to keep her in Ponder. But Josie can’t imagine abandoning her mother back in the Emerald City and sacrificing her career to stay in this isolated town—not even for a man she’s quickly coming to love. Fate has other plans. Josie misses the last boat out of town before winter sets in, stranding her in Ponder and putting her dream job at risk. As the holidays approach, Josie and Palmer must grapple with the complications that arise when dreams confront reality, and the Christmas magic that can happen when they put their faith in love. Debbie Macomber is at her best in this beautiful holiday story about the far journeys we travel to find a place to call home. Praise for Alaskan Holiday “[A] tender romance lightly brushed with holiday magic.”—Library Journal “[A] thoroughly charming holiday romance.”—Booklist

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bob and Margaret Wolff celebrated their wedding anniversary six months after their marriage--in case they didn't make it a full year. However, they shared a thirty-one year honeymoon before Bob's tragic accidental death. Alaskan Wolff Pack is Bob and Margaret's story, and the story of the remarkable children, friends, and pets they accumulated along the way. The delights of living in the Alaska bush amidst four legged neighbors, the closeness of sharing a one room cabin in a forty square mile yard, and the adventures of gold mining and travel; could not be dimmed by fires, floods, crashes, or death. They mostly lived from hand to mouth, often without a dime in their pockets, occasionally their material possessions were little more than the clothes on their backs, and the tooth ferry could only leave an IOU note under the children’s pillows--but their real riches were abundantly awesome.

During and after his thirty-year pastorate in Switzerland, he spent about three years over a period of fifteen years in South Korea working in the mission and churches in many parts of this stimulating country. He attended a five-week crash course at the Yonsei University in Seoul, South Korea, trying to learn their language. Norton wrote a book entitled South Korea: My Adventures and Sermons and made a DVD in English and German entitled Mission in South Korea on the Salvation Ship and Mission in Südkorea mit dem Schiff Salvation. The DVD depicts the country, mission, and Asian medicine. During Tom’s ministry in Switzerland, he enjoyed playing curling and was a member of the Swiss American Society in Bern for more than thirty years, six of those years as president, thus having many embassy and other interesting contacts. Not only has he had many engagements in Switzerland and South Korea, but also, as an Alaskan, he has had involvements and adventures throughout Alaska that were often rare and not experienced by the general public. He considers himself fortunate to have been able to profit from these encounters and feels it valuable to be able to pass on his knowledge to other Alaskans and non-Alaskans. Book A Kindly Providence

    Book Details:
  • Author : Louis Renner
  • Publisher : Ignatius Press
  • Release : 2010-08-31
  • ISBN : 1681490110
  • Pages : 516 pages

Download or read book A Kindly Providence written by Louis Renner and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2010-08-31 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive and illustrated volume is both a rich history of the Catholic Church in Alaska, and the autobiography of Fr. Louis Renner, S.J., who was a dedicated missionary in Alaska for 40 years. He tells here a compelling story of a full and fascinating life in service of the people and the Church of Alaska amid the incredible natural beauties, challenging elements and vast regions of the Great Land. Beautifully interweaving the history of the people and Church in Alaska, Fr. Renner tells his story of a dedicated missionary priest who loved the people he served. A scholar, a teacher, and always a Jesuit priest, he taught German and Latin at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, edited the Catholic newsletter The Alaskan Shepherd, and ran missions at two different Indian villages on the Yukon River. This pastoral priest became a friend to people in all sectors of Alaskan society. Tony Knows, the governor of Alaska, even presented him with the "Governor's Award for Friend of the Humanities". The outline of Fr. Renner's life is fleshed-out richly in A Kindly Providence. One reviewer writes that "all is there, a clear picture of his life. Renner is a very good writer- technically competent and very interesting. He kept this reader's interest throughout the 500-plus page book. I really wanted to see how it ended." Another writes: "Once I started to read it, I couldn't put it down. I had to finish it." Rich in detail, this book is a wonderful testimony to a model life of a happy priest in the twentieth century. The book is based, not only on Fr. Renner's remarkable memory, but also on his personal diaries and correspondence, on official documents, and on accounts written by him of his unusual adventures during over forty years in Alaska. Substantial quotes from diaries, letters, and official documents give readers a feeling of being actually present at those events in far-off places. The many photographs illustrating the narrative lend an air of immediacy and give us a vicarious experience of the author's personal life.
