Book An Advanced Guide to Psychological Thinking

Download or read book An Advanced Guide to Psychological Thinking written by Robert Ausch and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2015-05-06 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Psychology is a diverse assortment of fields with distinct referents, often using the same terms, and it is not always easy to identify its shared assumptions. At base, the academic variants tend to include the notion that mental activity takes place in hard-to-access inner spaces, making it more appropriate to study behavioral manifestations of it, yet all of it can be represented in an expert language with a confusing relationship to physiological mechanisms. An Advanced Guide to Psychological Thinking: Critical and Historical Perspectives focuses on several key areas in psychology: learning, the brain, child development, and psychotherapy, and identifies several conceptual tensions that ground psychological understanding of various phenomena. These include a tension between “inside” and “outside,” structure and function, higher and lower, and description and explanation; all have historically generated confusion at the heart of the discipline. As psychology was transformed into the study of consciousness in the late nineteenth century, and the science of behavior in the early twentieth, the disciplines of psychology struggled to distinguish between what was properly inside and what was outside mind, person, and organism as well as what forms the study of these “insides” would take. Additionally, it was unclear how to reconceive the traditional structures of the post-Cartesian mind in the terms of evolutionary functionalism without losing sight of the fact that the mind has its own organization or the historical connection between mind and higher forms of being. Psychology’s influence today, particularly that of post-Freudian therapeutics, has extended far beyond the university, creating a therapeutic sensibility by which Westerners make sense of themselves and their world. An Advanced Guide to Psychological Thinking performs the vital task of helping psychology recognize its own foundations.

Book The Robbery of Nature

Download or read book The Robbery of Nature written by John Bellamy Foster and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2020-02-24 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bridges the gap between social and environmental critiques of capitalism In the nineteenth century, Karl Marx, inspired by the German chemist Justus von Liebig, argued that capitalism’s relation to its natural environment was that of a robbery system, leading to an irreparable rift in the metabolism between humanity and nature. In the twenty-first century, these classical insights into capitalism’s degradation of the earth have become the basis of extraordinary advances in critical theory and practice associated with contemporary ecosocialism. In The Robbery of Nature, John Bellamy Foster and Brett Clark, working within this historical tradition, examine capitalism’s plundering of nature via commodity production, and how it has led to the current anthropogenic rift in the Earth System. Departing from much previous scholarship, Foster and Clark adopt a materialist and dialectical approach, bridging the gap between social and environmental critiques of capitalism. The ecological crisis, they explain, extends beyond questions of traditional class struggle to a corporeal rift in the physical organization of living beings themselves, raising critical issues of social reproduction, racial capitalism, alienated speciesism, and ecological imperialism. No one, they conclude, following Marx, owns the earth. Instead we must maintain it for future generations and the innumerable, diverse inhabitants of the planet as part of a process of sustainable human development.

Book Methodological Problems with the Academic Sources of Popular Psychology

Download or read book Methodological Problems with the Academic Sources of Popular Psychology written by Robert Ausch and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2016-02-19 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Methodological Problems with the Academic Sources of Popular Psychology: Context, Inference, and Measurementexamines the relationship between academic and popular psychology from a critical perspective with a focus on issues of methodology. The monograph traces the path from ideas in reputable popular psychology back to the original academic research tradition from which the claims were generated. It also addresses the conceptual and methodological controversies with respect to the original research typically ignored or played down in popular writing. This book covers a range of topics including the question of universal biases in judgment, resurgent notions of “fast” thinking and a cognitive unconscious, the psychology of happiness and other “positive” psychologies, the effects of parenting on child outcomes, and more general issues related to psychological tests and measures. The methodological problems that emerge include problems with generalizing from specific experimental conditions, highly biased sampling, lack of replication of findings, lack of shared referents across subfields, even different authors, as well as confusion around basic statistical and mathematical issues. Methodological Problems with the Academic Sources of Popular Psychology: Context, Inference, and Measurementreviews these issues extensively, offering both a sense of the history and pervasiveness of these issues in the field itself and an opportunity to review and master these difficult ideas.

Book excerpt: The Guide to Every Mental Model you Could Possibly Need You might have heard the popular phrase, "What you see is what you get." That phrase suggests that our view of the world inhibits our capability to experience it. Some would debate with the fact that an individual who has never experienced love in their lives has a massive deal of difficulty searching, keeping, or supporting an excellent relationship. In the same way, if you have grown up in hopeless poverty, it takes a huge deal of personal change before you could live along with abundance effortlessly. In a world loaded of concentration, mental models are the strongest argument for implementing a more multidisciplinary methodology. The idea behind the mental model is that wide exposure to an extensive spectrum of the issue allows you to influence the most practical understanding from each, allowing you to make better choices. Once you place yourself at the intersection of numerous disciplines, you establish the power to connect seemingly unconnected dots in a manner, which most are otherwise not capable of exploring. This is where genuine creativity and the most advanced solutions are seen. Mental Models is a book designed to upgrade your thinking along with the best, most practical and powerful tools, so you have the right one on hand. This book will outline the most versatile, multipurpose mental models you can utilize today to enhance your productivity, decision-making, and to help you clearly perceive the world around you. In this book, you will explore what forces administer the universe and how to concentrate your efforts so you could connect them to your own benefit, instead of struggling with them. Society is terrified by what appears to be an out-of-control epidemic of child molestation with little or no resolution in sight. The Perverse Plague invites you to delve beyond the overly simplistic, stereotypical, and politically correct dialogue of our day regarding sexual offenders to discover the whole truth behind the molestation of children and to do so through the framework of a Christian worldview that also incorporates established, well-documented psychological truths. Whether you are a church leader, clinician, or layperson; a victim of molestation, a concerned citizen, or a perpetrator, this book will inform, challenge, and satisfy as no other. Praise for The Perverse Plague Both secular and Christian communities have been deceived into believing there is no escape from an addiction to child sexual abuse. I believe this deception needs to be confronted by those who have proven that with God's help healing is possible, even from something the world has declared hopeless. I commend the authors for challenging the prevailing opinion of our day, proclaiming the possibility of victory with God's help. To that end, I recommend both The Perverse Plague and the approach therein. -Dr. Charles H. Kraft Author of Deep Wounds, Deep Healing; Defeating Dark Angels; I Give You Authority The church was intended to be a redeeming community where broken people find healing and freedom from their past.
