Download or read book An Adolescent s Christmas 1944 written by Carol Bly and published by . This book was released on 2020-12-10 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does it mean if the fourteen-year-old daughter in an affectionate, loyal, and at least "three-quarter's cultured" family has bad dreams about the Gestapo? This is memoir-not fiction-about a wartime Christmas in Duluth in 1944. Young Carol has two weeks home from boarding school in the East. Her mother has been dead two years, and of her three brothers, all in uniform, two are away at war. Carol arranges the crèche and admires the tree all right, but she also likes writing medium bad sonnets and plans to kiss "that boy in someone's rumpus room if he was the same one I thought he was." Underneath all that, she dreams about Germans, and genocide.

Download or read book John W Thompson written by Paul Weindling and published by University Rochester Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John W. Thompson: Psychiatrist in the Shadow of the Holocaust is the biography of a doctor whose revulsion at Nazi human experiments prompted him to seek a humane basis for physician-patient relations. As a military-scientific intelligence officer in 1945, Thompson was the first to name "medical war crimes" as a category for prosecution. His investigations laid the groundwork for the Nuremberg medical trials and for the novel idea of "informed consent." Yet, Thompson has remained a little-known figure, despite his many scientific, literary, and religious connections. This book traces Thompson's life from his birth in Mexico, through his studies at Stanford, Edinburgh, and Harvard, and his service in the Canadian Air Force. It reconstructs his therapeutic work with Unesco in Germany and his time as a Civil Rights activist in New York, where he developed his concept of holistic medicine. Thompson was close to authors like Auden and Spender and inspirational religious figures like Jean Vanier, founder of L'Arche. He drew on ideas of Freud, Jung, and Buber. The philosophical and religious dimensions of Thompson's response to Holocaust victims' suffering are key to this study, which cites accounts of psychiatrists, students and patients who knew Thompson personally, war crimes prosecution records, and unpublished personal papers. Paul Weindling is Wellcome Trust Research Professor at the Centre for Health, Medicine and Society: Past and Present, Oxford Brookes University, UK.

Book The Dominion of Youth

  • Publisher : Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press
  • Release : 2008-10-08
  • ISBN : 155458079X
  • Pages : 311 pages

Download or read book The Dominion of Youth written by Cynthia Comacchio and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2008-10-08 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adolescence, like childhood, is more than a biologically defined life stage: it is also a sociohistorical construction. The meaning and experience of adolescence are reformulated according to societal needs, evolving scientific precepts, and national aspirations relative to historic conditions. Although adolescence was by no means a “discovery” of the early twentieth century, it did assume an identifiably modern form during the years between the Great War and 1950. The Dominion of Youth: Adolescence and the Making of Modern Canada, 1920 to 1950 captures what it meant for young Canadians to inhabit this liminal stage of life within the context of a young nation caught up in the self-formation and historic transformation that would make modern Canada. Because the young at this time were seen paradoxically as both the hope of the nation and the source of its possible degeneration, new policies and institutions were developed to deal with the “problem of youth.” This history considers how young Canadians made the transition to adulthood during a period that was “developmental”—both for youth and for a nation also working toward individuation. During the years considered here, those who occupied this “dominion” of youth would see their experiences more clearly demarcated by generation and culture than ever before. With this book, Cynthia Comacchio offers the first detailed study of adolescence in early-twentieth-century Canada and demonstrates how young Canadians of the period became the nation’s first modern teenagers.

Book Delinquents and Debutantes

Download or read book Delinquents and Debutantes written by Sherrie A. Inness and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 1998-08 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contributors, including such leading scholars as Vicki L. Ruiz, Jennifer Scanlon, and Miriam Formanek-Brunell, examine myriad ways in which a variety of discourses and activities from popular girls' magazines and advertisements to babysitting and the Girl Scouts help form girls' experiences of what it means to be a girl, and later a woman, in our society. The essays address such topics as board games and the socialization of adolescent girls, dolls and political ideologies, Nancy Drew and the Filipina American experience, the queering of girls' detective fiction, and female juvenile delinquency to demonstrate how cultural discourses shape both the young and teenage girl in America. Although girls' culture has until now received comparatively little attention from scholars, this work confirms that understanding the culture of girls is essential to understanding how gender works in our society. Making a significant contribution to a long-neglected area of social and cultural inquiry, Delinquents and Debutantes will be of central interest to those in women's studies, American studies, history, literature, and cultural studies.

Book excerpt: FACES OF CHRISTMAS PAST is an engaging, middle-aged look at the perils of Christmas, our own self-imposed burdens of ritual duty (like the newsy Christmas Xerox), and the more unsettling fact that successive Christmases, more even than New Year's, mark the passing of our life from childhood to death. "Old Christmas card photos show us how we've aged," says author Bill Holm, "reminding us that, though time may curve in Einstein's physics, in our small life it is a straight line to white hair and bifocals."

Book I Was a Teenage Movie Maker

Download or read book I Was a Teenage Movie Maker written by Don Glut and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2007-06-18 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1953, a nine-year-old boy watched a prehistoric film called Beast From 20,000 Fathoms featuring the special effect magic of Ray Harryhausen. Enthralled by the movie but unsatisfied with what was available for at-home movie consumption, he decided to make his own science fiction thriller from dinosaurs to superheroes. This volume takes a firsthand look at the movie-making career of Don Glut. Beginning with his first movie, Diplodocus At Large, at age nine, it explores Glut's various attempts and the increasingly creative processes he used to bring his vision to life. Through the course of the work, Glut discusses his filmmaking experiences at the University of Southern California; the inspiration he received (and gave) through fanzines such as Famous Monsters of Filmland and Castle of Frankenstein; and the interest which his movies still generate. Films discussed include The Earth Before Man, Spy Smasher vs. the Purple Monster, Dinosaur Valley Girls, and Frankenstein Meets Dracula. A chronological filmography lists each of Glut's 41 films with notes regarding cast and a brief synopsis.

Yet pain and passion naturally mixed in both endeavors. Drawing on studio archives and featuring insightful interviews with Boetticher and those who worked with him, this retrospective looks at each of his 33 films in detail, covering his cinematic career from his days as an assistant's assistant on the set of Hal Roach comedies to his last documentary some 45 years later.
