Download or read book Neighborhood Tokyo written by Theodore C. Bestor and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 1989 with total page 752 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the vastness of Tokyo these are tiny social units, and by the standards that most Americans would apply, they are perhaps far too small, geographically and demographically, to be considered "neighborhoods." Still, to residents of Tokyo and particularly to the residents of any given subsection of the city, they are socially significant and geographically distinguishable divisions of the urban landscape. In neighborhoods such as these, overlapping and intertwining associations and institutions provide an elaborate and enduring framework for local social life, within which residents are linked to one another not only through their participation in local organizations, but also through webs of informal social, economic, and political ties. This book is an ethnographic analysis of the social fabric and internal dynamics of one such neighborhood: Miyamoto-cho, a pseudonym for a residential and commercial district in Tokyo where the author carried out fieldwork from June 1979 to May 1981, and during several summers since. It is a study of the social construction and maintenance of a neighborhood in a society where such communities are said to be outmoded, even antithetical to the major trends of modernization and social change that have transformed Japan in the last hundred years. It is a study not of tradition as an aspect of historical continuity, but of traditionalism: the manipulation, invention, and recombination of cultural patterns, symbols, and motifs so as to legitimate contemporary social realities by imbuing them with a patina of venerable historicity. It is a study of often subtle and muted struggles between insiders and outsiders over those most ephemeral of the community's resources, its identity and sense of autonomy, enacted in the seemingly insubstantial idioms of cultural tradition.

This book was released on 2019-04-17 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. The chapters fall into four categories to guide the readers with a specific focus on gaining insight into discipline-specific case studies and state of practice. In an increasingly intertwined global community, understanding, evaluating, and addressing risks and rewards will pave the way for a more transparent and objective approach to benefiting from the promises of advanced technologies while maintaining awareness and control over hazards and risks. This book is conceived to inform decision-makers and practitioners of best practices across many disciplines and sectors while encouraging innovation towards a holistic approach to risk in their areas of professional practice.

Book Deference to the Administration in Judicial Review

Download or read book Deference to the Administration in Judicial Review written by Guobin Zhu and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-23 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates judicial deference to the administration in judicial review, a concept and legal practice that can be found to a greater or lesser degree in every constitutional system. In each system, deference functions differently, because the positioning of the judiciary with regard to the separation of powers, the role of the courts as a mechanism of checks and balances, and the scope of judicial review differ. In addition, the way deference works within the constitutional system itself is complex, multi-faceted and often covert. Although judicial deference to the administration is a topical theme in comparative administrative law, a general examination of national systems is still lacking. As such, a theoretical and empirical review is called for. Accordingly, this book presents national reports from 15 jurisdictions, ranging from Argentina, Canada and the US, to the EU. Constituting the outcome of the 20th General Congress of the International Academy of Comparative Law, held in Fukuoka, Japan in July 2018, it offers a valuable and unique resource for the study of comparative administrative law.

Book International Comparative Perspectives on the Treatment of Urban Diseases

Download or read book International Comparative Perspectives on the Treatment of Urban Diseases written by Lu Xiaocheng and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-03-30 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With an integration of theories, comparative and empirical studies, this book aims to find a treatment for Beijing’s “urban diseases” and coordinate a low-carbon development plan for the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region in China. Unprecedented industrialization and unconventional urbanization caused a series of “urban diseases” for developing cities across the globe. By summarizing and exploring the evolution and phased characteristics of “urban diseases”, the author implements theories across classical sociology, human ecology, community school, and low-carbon city as the base for policy recommendations. This book also provides in-depth examinations and comparative studies of other metropolises’ experiences in controlling “urban diseases”. Cities such as New York, London, and Tokyo were modeled to propose the most appropriate low-carbon development plan for the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region. With a focus on developing cities in Northern China, this book will be a great read to all scholars and students of environmental studies, development studies, urban studies, and contemporary China studies. It will also be a great addition for those who are interested in social conflicts and economic development.

Book Historical Dictionary of Tokyo

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of Tokyo written by Roman Cybriwsky and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2011-02-18 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tokyo is Japan's largest city and its capital. It is also one of the largest cities in the world and a major center of global economic influence. The origins of human settlement in what is today Tokyo are lost in prehistory. The city started out quite modestly as a small castle town of Edo in 1457, then the center of the Tokugawa shogunate from 1603-1868, the rapidly modernizing and Westernizing capital of the nation during the Meiji Period (1868-1912), and the capital of a prosperous nation and growing empire thereafter. Tokyo was utterly devastated during World War II, but this was not the first time Tokyo had to start seemingly from new. Due to many fires and earthquakes, the city has constantly rebuilt itself and today it outdoes all its previous emanations by far. The second edition of the Historical Dictionary of Tokyo is a much-needed reference source on the city. This is done through a chronology, an introductory essay, an extensive bibliography, and over 600 cross-referenced dictionary entries on people, places, events, and other terminology about the city of Tokyo. This book is a must for anyone interested in Japan and Tokyo.

Book Air transport tourism nexus A destination management perspective

Download or read book Air transport tourism nexus A destination management perspective written by Maya Georgieva Ivanova and published by Zangador. This book was released on 2017-06-18 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of current research monograph is to provide a deeper view of the complex relationship between the air transport and tourism industries. The adopted point of view – a destination perspective – enables one to go into a more detailed exploration of the topic and to consider issues that usually remain invisible at the strategic managers’ level. The elaborated destination analysis framework and the identification of common points between aviation and tourism set the groundwork for further examination of the air transport-tourism nexus. Therefore, the book would be useful both for students and researchers in the field of tourism, hospitality and destination management, and for practitioners and destination management representatives who may find interesting insights and ideas for improvement. The monograph would be suitable also for managers and representatives from the air transport industry by providing them with the other point of view – that of the local tourist destination – to consider in their strategic growth and negotiation process.
