Understanding our climate is one of the major problems of the late twentieth century. The possible climatic changes resulting from the rise in atmospheric carbon dioxide and other trace gases are of primary interest and the ocean pla. ys a ma. jor role in determining the magnitude, temporal evolution and regional distribution of those changes. Because of the poor observational basis the ocean general circulation is not well understood. The World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE) which is now underway is an attempt to improve our knowledge of ocean dynamics and thermodynamics on global scales relevant to climate change. Despite those efforts, the oceanic data base is likely to remain scarce and it is crucial to use appropriate methods in order to extract the maximum amount of information from observations. The book contains a thorough analysis of methods to combine data of val'ious types with dynamical concepts, and to assimilate data directly into ocean models. The properties of geocl;temical tracers such as HC, He, Tritium and Freons and how they may be used to impose integral constraints on the ocean circulation are discussed.

Book excerpt: The dynamic response of the oceanic mixed-layer to the thermodynamic forcing at the sea surface is analyzed in order to describe the pattern of the oceanic meridional overturning. The technique proposed in this study is based on residual-mean theory, which takes into account the transport of buoyancy and tracers by transient eddies. From the observed air-sea density flux and mixed-layer density distributions, we estimate the two components of the Meridional Overturning Circulation (MOC) corresponding to the adiabatic (along-isopycnal) advection and the diabatic (cross-isopycnal) flux. Calculations are performed for the global ocean and, additionally, for each oceanic basin. The proposed method extends the Walin (1982) mass transformation theory, and permits, for the first time, assessment of the strength of the MOC adiabatic component from the sea surface data. This study offers a statistical description of the atmospheric and oceanic databases and gives some suggestions for the choice of specific datasets. In particular, the two most reliable atmospheric climatology databases (ECMWF and NCEP/NCAR re-analyses) are compared, and the impact of their inaccuracies on the MOC calculations is evaluated.

Book excerpt: The behavior of different parameterizations of mixed layer physics when used in an oceanic general circulation model (OGCM) having coarse resolution of the upper ocean is examined. The method of parameterization is expected to have an important effect on the resulting sea surface temperature, and hence affect the model's overall fidelity from the viewpoint of air-sea interaction. Tests of three possible parameterizations differ in the manner in which the mixed layer depth is determined: predetermination, diagnostic determination, or prognostic determination. The sea surface temperature is taken to be equivalent to the top OGCM layer temperature in the first two methods, while it is found prognostically in the third method. Results show that for typical forcing cases such as strong insolation, weak surface cooling or weak winds, mixing is insufficient to cause heat transfer between the top two OGCM layers, which occupy the uppermost 500 m of the model. The predetermined and diagnostically determined mixed layer depth parameterizations reduce to a diffusive mixing parameterization, while the prognostic approach satisfactorily models mixed layer depths for all forcing cases. The prognostic method also agrees most closely with the results of a mixed layer model and with observations.

The present level of our knowledge in the field of mathemat ical physics and numerical mathematics allows one to give rather complete theoretical analysis of basic statements of problems as well as numerical algorithms. Our task is to perform such analy sis and also to analyze the results of calculations in order to improve our knowledge of the mechanism of large-scale hy drological processes occurring in the World Ocean. The new level of numerical mathematics has essentially influenced , the formation of new solution methods of ocean dynamics prob lems, among which an important one is the splitting method, which has been already widely practised in various fields of science and engineering.
