Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Address to the Society of Friends The primitive believers were a simple and humble-minded people, whose hearts were exercised to know and to follow the direction of their Holy Leader ln the way of the cross, by surrendering all their crowns of earthly wisdom, riches, and pride, at the feet of Jesus, that all dominion, power, and praise, might be ascribed unto him, and as they kept humble, de pendent, and faithful, they were exalted' in due time, and made instruments in his holy hand for the promotion and spread of the Gospel power, by which they had been raised up out of the grave and bondage of sin, into the glorious libe1ty of the sons of God. Having tasted and seen for themselves of the goodness and mercy of God, in Christ Jesus, their Saviour, ln bringing them out of darkness into his marvellous light, they became concerned? For others, that their feet might be' turned into the same holy and living way of righteousness and peace; and, havmg been taught in the school of Christ, they were of that Spirit which taketh its kingdom by entreaty, and not by force. They were an innocent and unofl'ending people before the Lord, whom they endeavored to serve in all things, laying aside their own wills and wisdom, as carnal weapons, with which they refused to fight, lest they should be overcome by their enemies. The salvation of the soul was the end and aim of theirlives, and this they oftenisought at the1 peril, and even the sacrifice, of every earthly good. Jesus Christ, of Nazareth, who came to seek and to save that which was lost by the sacrifice 'of his own precious life, ' was their pattern, and his Spirit their direction, government, and support, in which they trusted with the dependence and confidence of little children, knowing and acknowledging that of themselves they could do nothing. Their worship was in spirit and m truth, for they Sat at the feet of Jesus, even as Mary did, and rejoiced and wondered at his gracious Words, for their attention was turned inward, where they communed with their own hearts, and were still, so that his voice could be heard preaching 1n them, the acceptable year of the Lord. Page 645, of his Works.give you no forced or false construction of your case. If, as your professed principle directs, -you come to him and to his light in your consciences, he will 'show you how, and where you stand; and remember, that if you do not come to him, as your living and ever-present teacher, dwelling, and speak ing to you, in your hearts, you do not come to that which, as it forms the glory, so it forms the life of your profession of religion. Wherein do you differ from others? Surely in nothing but in eccentricity, it might justly be replied, if this were not your obvious distinction - that, whilst the greater part of religious professors are but gazing at the letter which describes it, you seek after, and endeavour to walk by the powerful, internal guidance of the thing itself. Book Epistle From the Yearly Meeting of Friends

Download or read book Epistle From the Yearly Meeting of Friends written by Philadelphia Society of Friends and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-18 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Epistle From the Yearly Meeting of Friends: Held in Philadelphia, by Adjournments From the 15th of the Fourth Month to the 19th of the Same, Inclusive, 1861; Addressed to Its Members Many sons and daughters in our Religious Society have been brought into this day, and been instru mental in spreading the truth as it is in Jesus, who died in the faith, leaving us an example that we should follow them as they followed Christ; walking by the same rule which made them honorable, and prepared them for an inheritance with the saints in light. Great is our responsibility for the multitude of the Lord's mercies and favors extended to us, and it remains to be the travail of the rightly exercised, that all the members of the Society may be quickened to a lively sense of their respective duties, and, tum ing the back upon the love of the world, enter more fervently into the work of their own salvation, and into a living concern for the dominion of Christ's kingdom among men. The present is a period of much unsettlement in both civil and religious society. Many con icting opinions on of great importance, and a 'ect ing the highest interest of men, are pressed upon our notice with earnestness and plausibility. \vhere the natural inquisitiveness of the human mind is not regulated by the restraining in uence of the Holy Spirit, it is liable to be drawn into reasoning upon religious truths, the tendency of which is to perplex and bewilder, to unsettle the mind in what it was once rightly established in the belief of, and thus to produce a state of doubt and dimness of spiritual vision, which expose it to the adoption of serious errors. While laudably engaged in the proper cultivation of the intellectual powers, it becomes us to remember that there is a knowledge which puffeth up, and that if we employ it, with the unaided and unsancti ed mental faculties, in the investigation of religious truths, we shall be led astray. We believe the only place of safety, amid the peculiar trials and tempter tions of the present time, is in quiet inward retire ment, and humble waiting upon the Lord. In the simple trust and ready obedience of little children, we shall not only be taught in the school of Christ those things that belong to our souls' peace, but receive strength, from time to time, to fulfil all the good pleasure of His will. In this state of reverent dependence upon God, a holy stability will gradually be attained, in which we shall not be tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine by the sleight of men, but shall be enabled, with mag nanimity and firmness, to uphold these Christian principles and testimonies, which the adorable Head of the Church has called our Society to show forth to the world. This book was released on 2017-01-28 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Five Papers on the Past Proceedings and Experience of the Society of Friends, in Connection With the Education of Youth: Read at the Meetings of the Friends' Educational Society, at Ackworth, in the Years 1838, 1839, 1840, 1841, 1842 In the preface to this little book, it is stated that about six years since, a meeting of divers good friends took place concerning children's education, and teaching the languages; and what then was fully agreed on and writ down, was in substance, that they had agreed to lay aside the heathenish books, and the old corrupt grammars taken out of them, and set up the Scriptures of Truth, and what may be savoury, and good matter that may not corrupt children's minds. For the carrying out of this purpose they state that they had composed two books, instead of such grammars, as they had laid aside, because of the corrupt matter found in them. It is said, We deny nothing for children's learning that may be honest and useful for them to know, whether relating to divine principles, or that may be outwardly serviceable for them to learn in regard to the outward creation. We doubt much whether these elementary books were ever generally used in the other schools, which were doubtless soon Opened to meet the growing wants of the body. In the year 1671, by a memorandum found among the papers in Devonshire House, there appear to have been fifteen boarding schools. Book The Principles of the Religious Society of Friends and Some of Its Testimonies Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of the Religious Society of Friends and Some of Its Testimonies In sending forth this little book to the public, the writer has been actuated by no other motive or desire than to answer the many inquiries which come to him from time to time, both from those who are, and those who are not members of the Society of Friends, as to what Quakerism is; and realizing the need of answering these inquiries with such explanations as shall appeal to the thought and culture of the day, he has been induced under an apprehension of duty to write out that which his own conviction and experience have taught him to be the truth regarding it. Hence, he has endeavored to give expression to his thought upon this subject, in a form of language which he hopes will convince the rational under standing and judgment of his readers, from their present standpoint of culture, that they are practical and true, and capable of an adaptation to the spiritual needs of man, with a perfect confidence that theexperience of human life will confirm every position he has taken. With the humble hope that it may remove doubts from some minds, strengthen the convictions of others, and that all who read it may come nearer to the Divine Spirit, in thought, in hope, and in true spiritual life in the present state of existence, and strengthen the assurance that as each one lives in close obedience to the law written in the heart, there awaits us in the eternal life a glorious welcome to the Heavenly Father's mansions, he sends it forth on its mission of love and good will to men.
