This book was released on 2018-02-19 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Address Delivered by Request, Before the Detroit Young Men's Society, Relative to the Customs and Institutions of the Early Colonists of New England I can well remember the event of the first introduction of that sys tem into that which is Ohio now. I think it was about two years be fore Ohio became a state. I was too young then to participate at all in public affairs, or very fully to understand them. But this event I the more distinctly recollect, principally, perhaps, because of the deep interest all the Yankees then in that country exhibited in the matter. The occasion was indeed, considered, and very justly too, as a great triumph. The emigrants from New England constituted at that time, perhaps, a third part of the whole population. These were located principally, at or near the mouth of the Muskingum, and in the Con necticut Western Reserve, with some few who had joined the emigrants from New Jersey, at and near Cincinnati. The central parts of the state, so far as settled at all, were occupied by emigrants from Mary land, Virginia and Kentucky; and the eastern section of it, by citizens principally from the Keystone state. The habits and character of the emigrants from New Jersey, disposed them more to assimilate with the people of New England, and it was principally through their aid, it is believed, that this favorite measure was carried. All others were violently and strongly prejudiced against the policy of it, and sought only to render it ridiculous and hateful. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of a New England Church and People Chestnut Street, where the tall graceful Spire, one hundred and sixty-five feet in height, was seen against the delicate tracery of the top branches of the old elms, some of which had probably stood there as long as the church. On both sides of the street are some of the finest of the colonial houses for which Salem has been famous. It is near the centre of the city, very accessible, but very quiet, a block away from cars of all sorts. I remember that many years ago a gentle man of the neighborhood spent two years abroad and on his return said, that he had seen nothing in Europe that he liked better than Dr. Emerson's steeple. Spoken of in that way during the life of the old clergyman. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New England Poets It has sometimes been proposed, as a grace ful tribute to our most popular authors, that their statues Should be set up in public parks, surrounded by the ideal beings who are the creatures of their genius. In Longfellow's case this would surely include Hiawatha and his Minnehaha, Evangeline and Gabriel, perhaps also that kingly pair, Robert of Sicily and Olaf the Dane; certainly we could not spare dear Elsie, Who offers her young life so gladly for her prince, in the Legenda Aurea. Yet these favorites are almost wholly folk who never could have breathed our air, or understood a word of our speech. Book Recollections of a New England Town Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-01-13 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of a New England Town The interest that attached to the articles on old-time Meriden by Faith (mrs. Frances A. Breckenridge), as printed originally in Tfie Meriden Daily journal, led to the belief that published in book form they would prove entertaining, not only to present and former Meriden people, but to the readers of New England generally; for Meriden as described in Faith's quaint way in the following chapters, is typical of the New England villages of the first and second quarters of the century. To the newspaper articles have been added many chapters on subjects that cannot fail to engage the pleasant attention of all who would like to know What rural New England was like half a century and more ago. One great value that the work has is the absolutely correct historical information that it contains. What is told here is authenticated by carefully preserved family records, and personal knowledge of the author. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Address Delivered Before the New England Historic-Genealogical Society: At Its Annual Meeting, January 1, 1862 The fire, with well dried logs supplied, 3 Went roaring up the chimney wide l England was merry England, when Old Christmas brought his sports again. T'was Christmas broached the mightiest ale, T'was Christmas told the merriest tale A Christmas gambol oft would cheer A poor man's heart through half the year. - Scott. In accordance then with the good old custom of the New Year's gifts and good wishes, I would fain offer to my brethren of this Society, some thoughts which, although they may present nothing new, and perhaps may appear to some to involve a re-traversing of ground already familiar to all, will yet, I trust, be accepted with a kindly spirit, as an evidence of the deep interest I feel in the progress and success of this Society. Our title naturally suggest-s the course of my remarks, nor may it be altogether unprofitable to examine (much as may have been spoken and written on the subject) what is comprehended in the terms History and Genealogy - what are the higher uses of these sciences, and their relations to each other, and consequently what are the duties to be discharged, and the claims upon general support put forth by a Society, whose especial object it is, to promote the study of these sciences. And, although it may be contrary to the more usual order, which descends from genera to species, or from the whole to its parts, I will, with your permission, glance first at Biography and Genealogy, which are the twin hand maids and helpers of their elder and more stately sister, History.
