Download or read book Christ over All Things written by James P. Crockett Jr. and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2024-11-01 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Colossians and Ephesians present some of the highest statements of Christology in the New Testament. How is it that Christ came to be conceived not only as the Savior of humanity but also as the divine Lord over the whole cosmos? While previous scholars have looked to Wisdom traditions and Greco-Roman cosmology to provide background for the Christology of Colossians and Ephesians, James Crockett demonstrates that Jewish royal ideology provides the key conceptual background through which the Christology of these letters was formed. Crockett begins by demonstrating how Jewish literature reveals God's intent to enact his rule over creation through his enthroned king, a plan which begins with Adam and continues with the promise of the ideal Davidic king. Crockett then shows how Paul utilizes and expands upon Jewish royal ideological themes to portray Christ as the supreme cosmic king through whom God reestablishes cosmic harmony.
Download or read book Christian Democratic Parties in Europe Since the End of the Cold War written by Steven Van Hecke and published by Leuven University Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The period since the end of the Cold War has been characterised by an acceleration in the European integration process, a changing pattern of political ideologies and the emergence of new political parties and issues. This book assesses the impact of these phenomena on Christian Democratic parties in the current and future member states of the European Union and highlights some of the particularities and universalities of European Christian Democracy from a comparative and transnational perspective. Political scientists and historians from various universities examine the way in which Christian Democratic parties have responded to these challenges (for instance by a rapprochement with non-Christian Democrats) and explain how those responses have resulted in failure in some cases and success in others.

Download or read book The Enduring Authority of the Christian Scriptures written by D. A. Carson and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2016 with total page 1256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume, thirty-seven first-rate evangelical scholars present a thorough study of biblical authority and a full range of issues connected to it. Recognizing that Scripture and its authority are now being both challenged and defended with renewed vigor, editor D.A. Carson assigned the topics that these select scholars address in the book. After an introduction by Carson to the many facets of the current discussion, the contributors present robust essays on relevant historical, biblical, theological, philosophical, epistemological, and comparative-religions topics. To conclude, Carson answers a number of frequently asked questions about the nature of Scripture, cross-referencing these FAQs to the preceding chapters. This comprehensive volume by a team of recognized experts will be the go-to reference on the nature and authority of the Bible for years to come. -- Amazon.

Download or read book Christ Among the Messiahs written by Matthew V. Novenson and published by OUP USA. This book was released on 2012-04-17 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: He then traces the rise and fall of "the messianic idea"' in Jewish studies and gives an alternative account of early Jewish messiah language: the convention worked because there existed both an accessible pool of linguistic resources and a community of competent language users. Whereas it is commonly objected that the normal rules for understanding "christos" do not apply in the case of Paul since he uses the word as a name rather than a title, Novenson shows that "christos" in Paul is neither a name nor a title but rather a Greek honorific, like Epiphanes or Augustus. Focusing on several set phrases that have been taken as evidence that Paul either did or did not use "christos" in its conventional sense, Novenson concludes that the question cannot be settled at the level of formal grammar. Examining nine passages in which Paul comments on how he means the word "christos", Novenson shows that they do all that we normally expect any text to do to count as a messiah text.
Download or read book Church Society and the Christian Common Good written by Ephraim Radner and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2017-07-14 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philip Turner's contributions as a leader and thinker in Christian missions and social ethics are here engaged by an array of friends and colleagues. Turner's scholarly and clerical career spans a key era of transition in American and world Christianity, and his thinking and teaching about the intersection between ecclesial and civil life have encouraged several generations of Christian theologians and ministers. The essays in this collection touch on key topics in which Turner has been involved: cross-cultural missions, social relations in terms of family and procreation, ecclesiology, scriptural interpretation, the nature of the public good, and the character of a human life before God. Turner has been a pioneer, within the Anglican world especially, in promoting what has been called a "generous orthodoxy," and these essays by prominent theologians from America and the United Kingdom extend his witness in lively and fruitful ways.
Download or read book Asia in the Making of Christianity written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2013-04-23 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on first person accounts, Asia in the Making of Christianity studies conversion in the lives of Christians throughout Asia, past and present. Fifteen contributors treat perennial questions about conversion: continuity and discontinuity, conversion and communal conflict, and the politics of conversion. Some study individuals (An Chunggŭn of Korea, Liang Fa of China, Nehemiah Goreh of India), while others treat ethnolinguistic groups or large-scale movements. Converts sometimes appear as proto-nationalists, while others are suspected of cultural treason. Some transition effortlessly from leadership in one religious community into Christian ministry, while others re-convert to new forms of Christianity. The accounts collected here underscore the complexity of conversion, balancing individual agency with broader social trends and combining micro- with macrocontextual approaches.
