Book The Challenge of Agriculture

Download or read book The Challenge of Agriculture written by Melville H. Staples and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Challenge of Agriculture: The Story of the United Farmers of Ontario For almost three centuries after the discovery of America that part of Canada lying west of the Ottawa River was very little inhabited by white men. Adventurers, traders, colonists, and officials who came to seek a fortune, or a home, or both in the New World, clung to the banks of the Lower St. Lawrence or to the Eastern seaboard. But gradually the resources of the great unsettled region became known, and colonists pushed on into the forest. With infinite labour and unfaltering courage they began to hew out for themselves little plots of land. This movement received a wonderful stimulus about the year 1784, when the United Empire Loyalists began flocking into Canada. With the coming of the Loyalists, the rapid development of Ontario may be said to have begun. Whatever we may think of the Loyalists' action, we must admire their courage and their tenacity of purpose. "The sufferings of these Loyalists during the long march to Canada were terrible. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Agricultural Education in Ontario Although several attempts to introduce agri cultural instruction into the schools have been made, yet the amount of work done until a comparatively recent date has been quite limited. As the successes or failures in these efforts have been due, in no small measure, to the social, industrial, political, and educational movements of the times, attention has been given to these factors. Book History of Farming in Ontario Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of Farming in Ontario Classic Reprint written by Charles Canniff James and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-11 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Farming in Ontario Rom the most southern point of Ontario on Lake Erie, F near the 42nd parallel of latitude, to Moose Factory on James Bay, the distance is about 750 miles. From the eastern boundary on the Ottawa and St Lawrence Rivers to Kenora at the Manitoba boundary, the distance is about 1000 miles. The area lying within these extremes is about square miles. In 1912 a northern addition of over square miles was made to the surface area of the province, but it is doubtful whether the agricultural lands will thereby be increased. Of this large area about acres are occupied and assessed, including farm lands and town and city sites. It will be seen, therefore, that only a small fraction of the province has, as yet, been occupied. Practically all the occupied area lies south of a line drawn through Montreal, Ottawa, and Sault Ste Marie, and it forms part of the great productive zone of the continent. The next point to be noted is the irregularity of the boundary-line, the greater portion of which is water - Lakes Superior, Huron, Erie, Ontario, the St Lawrence River, the Ottawa River, James Bay, and Hudson Bay. The modifying effect of great bodies of water must be considered in studying the agricultural possibilities of Ontario. Across this great area of irregular outline there passes a branch of the Archaean rocks running in a north-western direction and forming a watershed, which turns some of the streams to Hudson Bay and the others to the St Lawrence system. An undulating surface has resulted, more or less filled with lakes, and almost lavishly supplied with streams. Book Teaching of the Elements of Agriculture in the Common Schools Address Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-02-13 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Teaching of the Elements of Agriculture in the Common Schools: Address One might reasonably assume that this is an extract from an address before one of our farmers' institutes, or has been taken from a lately issued report of some department of agriculture, and that they are the words and opinions of some leading agriculturist. Not so, however. These are the words of Egerton Ryerson, the founder of the public school system of Ontario, taken from the introduction to his text book on agriculture for use in Ontario public schools, and written in 1870. I can well believe that twenty-five years from the present some student of the educational and economic history of Ontario will be hard at work studying out and trying to explain why so little progress was made in general agricultural instruction in that Province during the years from 1870 to 1899. During that period four text books at least were available and various attempts weremade at encouraging the work; but in 1898, as far as Ontario was concerned, we were no further advanced than we were in 1870. Book Agricultural Education and Research in Canada Classic Reprint

Download or read book Agricultural Education and Research in Canada Classic Reprint written by Frank T. Shutt and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-08 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Agricultural Education and Research in Canada Though agriculture is not a science in the same sense that chem istry, biology and physics are sciences. There is in a very real and vital sense a'science of agriculture in which the basic sciences l have named and others are-called upon to contribute towards the solution of problems affecting farming and to establish the truth: which must furnish the foundation necessary for the rational coriact and develop ment of the art, To elaborate this thought somewhat: it is evident. In the first place. That agriculture is a vocation or occupation whereby men earn a livelihood and in which they till the soil. Sow and harvest crops, feed and raise livestock. It is an art or craft, therefore. Requiring skill and experience in manipulation for its successful prosecution. It is obvious that above all the farmer is a director of agencies (for he himself creates nothing). Agencies which involve the life of the soil. The life of. Plants. The life of animals. He ought to know how these agencies may best be directed and controlled From this view. And I believe it is the c'orrect one. The science of agriculture. As supplying the basis for all this work, is y largely a subdivision of our latest development in pure chemistry, bio-chemistry; i say largely, _ for it is not exclusively bio-chemistry; physics. Meteorology, economics and other sciences mast be called upon in the attempt to establish the truth and to mark the way for further progress in the art of farm mg.
