Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Address of Charles Hudson, of Mass;, To the Citizens of the Fifth Congressional District of That State, on Retiring From the Office of Representatives in Congress When the madness of Mr. Tyler's administration manifested itself in the attempt to annex Texas to the Union, I took early and decided ground against it: first, in an elaborate letter addressed to the Whig Committee of the county of Worcester, published in the Spy and in the nis, of August 15, 1844; and afterwards, in a. Speech on the floor of the House, I predicted that the annexation of Texas would so strengthen the South as to enable them to break down the protective policy which sustained the free labor of the North, which was consummated by the votes of Texan. Senators. I also predicted that it would involve us in an unjust war with Mexico, which has likewise been verified. On both of these occasions, I denounced the measure as one designed to extend and foster the slave institution. In the speech in the House, January 20, 1845, I used this language.
