In particular, it looks at the design of an active reconfigurable reflectarray antenna, which has not received much attention in the reflectarray community. Potential applications include deployment as a high gain, reconfigurable antenna for communication links, and as a spatial power combiner. The reflectarray element is an aperture-coupled patch that accepts a linearly polarized wave, phase shifts and amplifies the guided-waves in the transmission lines, and then re-radiates an orthogonally polarized wave. Stability analysis of the element, experimental results of the designed phase shifter and simulation and experimental results of the element are presented. Fabrication details of a 48 element reflectarray and challenges faced during experimental characterization of the elements are also discussed. The two dimensional beamforming capability and amplifying nature of the array are successfully demonstrated and verified, indicating robustness to phase errors and oscillating elements.

This book begins with introductory material on reflectarray antennas and progresses to the presentation of state-of-the-art research in the field. A direct comparison with conventional reflector antennas is provided, focusing on conventional efficiency figures of reflectors. Moreover, this book offers remarks on the future direction of reflectarray research and also potential applications of the technology in face of the emergence of new fabrication techniques to accommodate both passive and active elements.

The unit cell consists of a microstrip patch on the top layer and variable length slot in the ground plane. The designed unit cell of dimensions 15mm x 15mm provides a reflection phase range of 153 . The array has 64 elements of different reflection coefficient phases in the form of a planar array. A reflectarray prototype has been measured in a far-field anechoic chamber facility at NUST, giving a gain of 14dB and axial ratio>20dB at the operating frequency of 10GHz."

A novel and efficient modular numerical technique called Scale Changing Technique (SCT) addresses all these problems. The focus of this book is on EM modeling of passive and active (electronically steerable by RF-MEMS Switches )microstrip reflectarray using this Technique.

Book excerpt: Reflection coefficients over a 749-element reflectarray aperture for a broadside radiation pattern are presented for a couple of cases and the effects of coupling conditions in conjunction with incidence angles are demonstrated. The presented theory provides explicit physical intuition and guidelines for efficient and accurate reflectarray design. In chapter 4, tunable reflectarray elements capacitively loaded with Barium Strontium Titanate (BST) thin film are shown. The effects of substrate thickness, operating frequency and deposition pressure are shown utilizing coupling conditions and the performance is optimized. To ensure minimum affects from biasing, optimized biasing schemes are discussed. The proposed unit cells are fabricated and measured, demonstrating the reconfigurability by varying the applied E-field. To demonstrate the concept, a 45 element array is also designed and fabricated. Using anechoic chamber measurements, far-field patterns are obtained and a beam scan up to 25° is shown on the E-plane. Overall, novel theoretical approaches to analyze the reflection properties of the reflectarray elements using Q factors are developed. The proposed theoretical models provide valuable physical insight utilizing coupling conditions and aid in efficient reflectarray design. In addition, for the first time a continuously tunable reflectarray operating at Ka-band is presented using BST technology. Due to monolithic integration, the technique can be extended to higher frequencies such as V-band and above.
