Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a stunning follow-up to his much-heralded masterpiece, Kalooki Nights, acclaimed author Howard Jacobson has turned his mordant and uncanny sights on Felix Quinn, a rare-book dealer living in London, whose wife Marisa is unfaithful to him. All husbands, Felix maintains, secretly want their wives to be unfaithful to them. Felix hasn't always thought this way. From the moment of his first boyhood rejection, surviving the shattering effects of love and jealousy had been the study of his life. But while he is honeymooning with Marisa in Florida an event occurs that changes everything. In a moment, he goes from dreading the thought of someone else's hands on the woman he loves to thinking about nothing else. Enter Marius into Marisa's affections. And now Felix must wonder if he really is a happy man. The Act of Love is a haunting novel of love and jealousy, with stylish prose that crackles and razor-sharp dialogue, praised by the London Times as "darkly transgressive, as savage in its brilliance, as anything Jacobson has written." It is a startlingly perceptive, subtle portrait of a marriage and an excruciatingly honest, provocative exploration of sexual obsession.

Book An Introduction to Natural Theology

Download or read book An Introduction to Natural Theology written by Maurice R. Holloway and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2018-06-21 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “What is the God of the philosopher? Can the philosopher, that is to say, can human reason, unenlightened by the revealed word, come to a true and secure understanding of ‘He-Who-Is’? Is it possible for mere man, without the impact of a personal experience, intimate and intuitive, to arrive by means of an objective demonstration at an absolute affirmation that the Being we call God exists, or that He is Pure Act, Existence Itself, because without him the world of our experience is unintelligible, a complete contradiction? “And even if we admit, as all Christian philosophers must, that unaided reason is able by its own power to reach an objectively true and secure assent that God exists, is there any evidence, in the recorded history of our world, that man, without the directive knowledge of revelation, ever did secure by a metaphysical effort this absolute truth that the Ipsum Esse exists? Whatever be the answer to this difficult problem—and we do not pretend to know it—it is obvious that Father Holloway, in composing his philosophical approach to God, allowed himself to be guided by the knowledge of faith. Indeed, he must have prayed often for the enlightenment which the supernatural motion of divine grace brings even to the limited and imperfect intellect of a philosopher.” —From the Foreword by Henri Renard, S.J.

Book Awakening Through Love

Download or read book Awakening Through Love written by John Makransky and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2007-07-17 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mother Theresa, The Dalai Lama, Nelson Mandela, Gandhi.....Some admire such figures from afar and think, "How special they are; I could never be like that". But as John Makransky teaches, the power of real and enduring love lies within every one of us. Awakening Through Love teaches how to enjoy a life imbued with that love, through Buddhist methods for cultivating genuine caring and appreciation for others. Makransky is a fully qualified guide to this practice: a professor of Buddhism and Comparative Theology at Boston College and a father of two, he is also a close student and colleague of Lama Surya Das, who provides the foreword here. Above all, he radiates an earnest and genuine caring, both in person and on the page. Rooted in Buddhism's Dzogchen tradition, Makransky asserts that love is part of the very nature of our being, and that if we can clear away the delusions that obscure our true nature, love will flow to and from us effortlessly. Awakening Through Love imparts meditations for both gradual cultivation and direct insight. Makransky also provides a uniquely convincing and moving presentation of the role of a teacher, or "benefactor," in deepening our spiritual path. Part of the brilliance of Awakening Through Love is that it finds what is universal in Buddhist ideas and practices and renders them usable for a general audience, with many references to ways that Christians and others can adapt the methods to their own traditions. Peppered with inspiring contemporary stories, the book will leave readers feeling more open, more inspired, and more engaged.

Book Summa Theologica All Complete Unabridged 3 Parts Supplement Appendix interactive links and annotations

Download or read book Summa Theologica All Complete Unabridged 3 Parts Supplement Appendix interactive links and annotations written by Thomas Aquinas and published by e-artnow. This book was released on 2013-08-20 with total page 5383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This carefully crafted ebook: "Summa Theologica (All Complete & Unabridged 3 Parts + Supplement & Appendix + interactive links and annotations)" is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. This ebook is the best-known work of Thomas Aquinas (c.1225–1274). Although unfinished, the Summa is "one of the classics of the history of philosophy and one of the most influential works of Western literature." It is intended as an instructional guide for moderate theologians, and a compendium of all of the main theological teachings of the Catholic Church. It presents the reasoning for almost all points of Christian theology in the West. The Summa Theologica is divided into three parts, and each of these three parts contains numerous subdivisions. Part 1 deals primarily with God and comprises discussions of 119 questions concerning the existence and nature of God, the Creation, angels, the work of the six days of Creation, the essence and nature of man, and divine government. Part 2 deals with man and includes discussions of 303 questions concerning the purpose of man, habits, types of law, vices and virtues, prudence and justice, fortitude and temperance, graces, and the religious versus the secular life. Part 3 deals with Christ and comprises discussions of 90 questions concerning the Incarnation, the Sacraments, and the Resurrection. Some editions of the Summa Theologica include a Supplement comprising discussions of an additional 99 questions concerning a wide variety of loosely related issues such as excommunication, indulgences, confession, marriage, purgatory, and the relations of the saints toward the damned. Scholars believe that Rainaldo da Piperno, a friend of Aquinas, probably gathered the material in this supplement from a work that Aquinas had completed before he began working on the Summa Theologica. It seeks to describe the relationship between God and man and to explain how man’s reconciliation with the Divine is made possible at all through Christ. To this end, Aquinas cites proofs for the existence of God and outlines the activities and nature of God. Approximately one-half of the Summa Theologica then examines the nature and purpose of man. Finally, Aquinas devotes his attention to the nature of Christ and the role of the Sacraments in effecting a bridge between God and man. Within these broad topical boundaries, though, Aquinas examines the nature of God and man in exquisite detail. His examination includes questions of how angels act on bodies, the union of body and soul, the cause and remedies of anger, cursing, and the comparison of one sin with another. Aquinas is attempting to offer a truly universal and rational view of all existence. Thomas Aquinas, O.P. (1225 – 1274), also Thomas of Aquin or Aquino, was an Italian Dominican priest, and an immensely influential philosopher and theologian in the tradition of scholasticism, within which he is also known as the "Doctor Angelicus", "Doctor Communis", and "Doctor Universalis". He was the foremost classical proponent of natural theology, and the father of Thomism. His influence on Western thought is considerable, and much of modern philosophy was conceived in development or refutation of his ideas, particularly in the areas of ethics, natural law, metaphysics, and political theory.
