Book excerpt: Chan’s exploration of the acquisition of English grammar and phonology by Cantonese learners of English as a Second Language (ESL) offers insights into the specific challenges that learners often encounter and posits ways to help them overcome those challenges. Possible sources of the challenges are also examined. The book covers the basic differences between English and Cantonese grammar as well as those between English and Cantonese phonology. Chan discusses the kinds of grammatical and phonological problems that Cantonese ESL learners often have in their acquisition of English. In terms of grammar, various structures are reviewed, including errors which are clearly due to L1 interference and also those which may not be directly L1-related. Learners’ common misconceptions about relevant concepts are also revealed. In terms of phonology, both speech perception and speech production problems at the segmental and suprasegmental levels are examined. For learner problems which may be the result of L1 interference, a contrastive approach is adopted in analysing the cause and nature of the errors. Chan also offers readers pedagogical insights to target common grammatical problems, including the use of an algorithmic approach, the use of a discovery-based consciousness-raising approach and the use of metalinguistic explanations. As far as the learning of English phonology is concerned, she argues that the training of speech production should go hand-in-hand with that of speech perception. Future research can experiment with the proposed teaching ideas with Cantonese ESL learners and learners of other native languages. Researchers and ESL teaching professionals will find the insights and research contained within this volume invaluable when encountering or researching Chinese ESL learners.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vowel-Sound: Thesis Presented to the University of LondonIt is evident, however, that such a state of things can only be temporary, that in fact we shall never continue to classify sounds according to the accidents of their origin when once we are able to arrange them after the essentials of their nature. Not indeed that we should slacken our study of articulations. Quite the reverse. But we ought to know why certain articulations produce certain sounds, and what is the intimate acoustic nature of the sounds thus produced. When that is done we shall certainly learn first to know the sounds per se, and then to know the reasons why certain articulations produce them. Until then we shall always be in danger of viewing the subject in an inverted perspective, hardly seeing that which ought to be the chief object of our view. Phonetics is defined to be the science of speech-sounds. N ow the first thing we want to know about a sound is its acoustic nature; our interest in its mode of production is only of a secondary kind.It follows then that in the phonetic science of the future speech-sounds will certainly be classed not according to their articulation, but according to their acoustic essence; and the study of articulations will be the first handmaid of Phonetics, but will stand no risk of being mistaken, as it now is, for Phonetics itself. This being so, it seems clear that the path of greatest usefulness at present in phonetic investigation is to enquire further into the acoustic nature of speech-sounds, and especially of vowels. This has been done already to a certain extent, but not to anything like a sufficient degree. Nearly every phonetician of the acoustic school has his own scheme or diagram of classification, wherein the vowels are duly arranged in an order which seems suitably to represent their relative affinities of sound: and some physicists also, notably Willis and Helmholtz, have made partially successful attempts to analyze the different vowels into their acoustic elements, and also to construct artificial vowels. Teams of experts examine the prosody of Catalan, French, Friulian, Italian, Occitan, Portuguese, Romanian, Sardinian, and Spanish using the Autosegmental Metrical framework of intonational phonology and the Tones and Breaks Indices (ToBI) transcription system. The chapters all share a common methodology, based on a common Discourse Completion Task questionnaire, and provide extensive empirical data. The authors then analyse how intonation patterns work together with other grammatical means such as syntactic constructions and discourse particles in the linguistic marking of a varied set of sentence types and pragmatic meanings across Romance languages. The ToBI prosodic systems and annotations proposed for each language are based both on a phonological analysis of the target language as well as on the shared goal of using ToBI analyses that are comparable across Romance languages. This book will pave the way for more systematic typological comparisons of prosody across both Romance and non-Romance languages.
