Book excerpt: This document sketches topics considered by a 1990 conference on student motivation sponsored by the Office of Educational Research and Improvement of the U.S. Department of Education. Educational reforms of the past decade have not produced higher test scores for American students. Rather, American students score lower and study less than students in other developed countries. A number of disincentives to student effort are prevalent. These include: (1) the large number of nonacademic activities which students are encouraged to pursue, and which compete for their time; (2) public policies that reward students for making minimal efforts, a condition exemplified by the fact that, as graduation rates have risen over the past 25 years, academic achievement scores have gone down; (3) ambivalent messages sent by schools when athletes are given privileged status, and peers pressure against academic achievement; and (4) classroom practices by teachers who, although well-intentioned, give students unchallenging work, or convey to students their low expectations. Several strategies to increase student effort are suggested. Appendixes include summaries of conference papers on the role of student effort in Japanese schools; the use of compensatory practices in American schools, such as giving out test answers before a test; and students' interpretations of teachers' behavior and attitudes. Such situations allow them to either grasp into the success or failures of their learning experience. For a long period of time, this topic has been accalimed for its good contribution in the welfare of the school, its administration and stakeholders. The most common academic performance indexes are the intellective factors like the entrance examinations, report and class cards, aptitude and mental ability tests. Although their validity and dependability were already established, a vast number of researchers in the academe shifted their interst to the psychological measures of non-ntellective factors. These can be regarded as the psychological and motivationas forces that increase the students' success in learning. Well-known examples of these variables like motivation, learning style, sel-esteem, self-motivation, interests, locus of control, study habits and personality. Based on different researchers, they established significant relationships with academic achievement. They even presicted the grades of the students in differen levels and majority of them also mediated each other to have a good effect on ones's performance. A lot of researchers dwell on determining the effects of the intellective and non-intellective factors because academic performances determines the success and failure of educational institutions. That is why based on the outcome of these researches ; intervention programs are designed and implemented to cater the academic and non-academic needs of the students. Granting that the non-intellective factors mentioned above provide positive impact to academic performances, gaps in the literature are still present and needed to be given resolution. At the same time, no research yet was done in the Philippine setting pertaining to Robert Vallerand's academic motivation and Raymon Perry's percieved academic control. When considering the research respondents, there is o particular study that focused on using a special group of studentswith a different learning condition. To be specific, the students under a strict retention policy program were chosen and examined in this study. An effort to compare the said respondents to regular group of studenst was also carried out. Investigating the above mentioned non intellective factors with the kind of respondents thi research has will make the student, parents, educators and school administrators understand the underlying effects of learning in a controlled condition. Prticularly, students will have and adequate preparation to the tough academic demandsof the Accountancy program. The parents can also give their guidance and support to their sons and daughters while enrolled in the program. Above all, the school administration will have a better review in the positive and negative effects of the retention policies to their programs.

Book excerpt: STUDY HABITS The research reported in this thesis makes a modest study of Study Habits in post-graduate students in relation to certain important social and psychological factors. The sociological variables include ethnicity, faculty and gender while the psychological variables consist of adjustment, aspiration, and parental support. The data of study habits and use of library, adjustment, aspiration and parental support were collected from 400 post-graduate students drawn from four faculties namely Arts, Science, Commerce and Medicine. Each faculty was represented by 100 cases divided into an equal number of tribal, non-tribal, male and female cases. In addition to the above noted psychological variables, the academic achievement of the student was also taken into account. The marks obtained by the students in their last examination were considered as a measure of academic achievement. The data obtained were analyzed to measure the extent of Study Habit and Use of library among Post Graduate students of four faculties. Besides, an attempt was made to examine the main and interaction effect of ethnicity, faculty and gender on two main dependent variables namely Study Habits and Use of Library. Furthermore, the relationship of Study Habits and Use of Library was examined with adjustment, aspiration and parental support. Inter-relationship of Study Habits and Use of Library was also studied and those two variables were correlated with academic achievement.
