Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Account of the Yellow Fever, Which Occurred in the City of New-York: In the Year 1822; To Which Is Prefixed, a Brief Sketch of the Different Pestilential Diseases, With Which This City Was Afflicted, in the Years 1798, 1799, 1803 and 1805, With the Opinion of Several of Our Most Eminent Physicians I most respectfully submit to the perusal of my fel low citizens, this little volume. The subject is peculiar ly interesting and has excited the inquiry of many of the most eminent physicians, not only in the United States, but also in Europe. Many books have been written on the subject of Yellow Fever; but there appears to be still as great a diversity of opinion respecting its origin, amongst medical gentlemen, as there was about one hun dred and twenty years ago, when it first made its appear ance in this country. Whether physicians will ever agree upon this subject, I know not; but if they cannot unite in opinion respect ing its origin, it would certainly be of infinite importance, if they would consult together and endeavour to devise the most effectual mode of its cure. When an evil be fals us, it is an object of little consequence to know from whence it came. The main point is to ascertain the means of removing it. Book excerpt: In this account, a journalist traces the course of the infectious disease known as yellow fever, “vividly [evoking] the Faulkner-meets-Dawn of the Dead horrors” (The New York Times Book Review) of this killer virus. Over the course of history, yellow fever has paralyzed governments, halted commerce, quarantined cities, moved the U.S. capital, and altered the outcome of wars. During a single summer in Memphis alone, it cost more lives than the Chicago fire, the San Francisco earthquake, and the Johnstown flood combined. In 1900, the U.S. sent three doctors to Cuba to discover how yellow fever was spread. There, they launched one of history's most controversial human studies. Compelling and terrifying, The American Plague depicts the story of yellow fever and its reign in this country—and in Africa, where even today it strikes thousands every year. With “arresting tales of heroism,” (Publishers Weekly) it is a story as much about the nature of human beings as it is about the nature of disease.

Book A Nation of Speechifiers

Download or read book A Nation of Speechifiers written by Carolyn Eastman and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2010-06-15 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the decades after the American Revolution, inhabitants of the United States began to shape a new national identity. Telling the story of this messy yet formative process, Carolyn Eastman argues that ordinary men and women gave meaning to American nationhood and national belonging by first learning to imagine themselves as members of a shared public. She reveals that the creation of this American public—which only gradually developed nationalistic qualities—took place as men and women engaged with oratory and print media not only as readers and listeners but also as writers and speakers. Eastman paints vibrant portraits of the arenas where this engagement played out, from the schools that instructed children in elocution to the debating societies, newspapers, and presses through which different groups jostled to define themselves—sometimes against each other. Demonstrating the previously unrecognized extent to which nonelites participated in the formation of our ideas about politics, manners, and gender and race relations, A Nation of Speechifiers provides an unparalleled genealogy of early American identity.
