This book was released on 2011-08 with total page 796 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is often considered a companion volume of O'Hart's, "Irish Pedigrees: the Orgin and Stem of the Irish Nation," 2 Volumes, the Third Edition of which was published in 1881, and provided the genealogies of the families which branched from that ancient stem; together with the genealogies of Anglo-Irish and Anglo-Norman families which settled in Ireland from time to time since the English invasion. In this Volume the author documents some 257 additional genealogies which were collected, most of them in the MSS. Library of Trinity College, or in the Royal Irish Academy, Dublin, since the Third Edition of Irish Pedigrees was compiled, with a few of the original genealogies contained in that Edition, corrected or enlarged. Also included within "The Irish and Anglo-Irish Landed Gentry" is an extensive Appendix, which provides transcriptions of primary sources destroyed by fire in 1922. The author has also included numerous lists of Forfeiting Proprietors, names included on "Transplanters' Certificates," lists relating to the seventeenth-century land settlements, lists of the Irish Brigades, and much, much more. Approximately 22,000 surname references. Paperback, (1884), repr. Appendices, Index, 792 pp.

Book Lords of the Central Marches

Download or read book Lords of the Central Marches written by Brock Holden and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2008-08-07 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Middle Ages, the March between England and Wales was a contested, militarised frontier zone, a 'land of war'. With English kings distracted by affairs in France, English frontier lords were left on their own to organize and run lordships in the manner that was best suited to this often violent borderland. The centrepiece of the frontier society that developed was the feudal honour and its court, and in the March it survived as a functioning entity much longer than in England. However, in the twelfth century, as the growing power of the English crown threatened Marcher honours, their lords asserted their independence from the king's courts, and the March became a land where 'the king's writ did not run'. At the same time, the increased military capability of their Welsh adversaries put the Marcher lordships under enormous military and financial strain. Brock Holden describes how this unusual frontier society developed in reaction to both the challenge of the native Welsh and the power of the English kings. Through a multi-faceted examination-political, economic, social, legal, and military-of the lordships of the Central March of Wales, it examines how the 'feudal matrix' of Marcher power developed over the course of the eleventh to thirteenth centuries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Renowned scholar Thomas Asbridge brings to life medieval England’s most celebrated knight, William Marshal—providing an unprecedented and intimate view of this age and the legendary warrior class that shaped it. Caught on the wrong side of an English civil war and condemned by his father to the gallows at age five, William Marshal defied all odds to become one of England’s most celebrated knights. Thomas Asbridge’s rousing narrative chronicles William’s rise, using his life as a prism to view the origins, experiences, and influence of the knight in British history. In William’s day, the brutish realities of war and politics collided with romanticized myths about an Arthurian “golden age,” giving rise to a new chivalric ideal. Asbridge details the training rituals, weaponry, and battle tactics of knighthood, and explores the codes of chivalry and courtliness that shaped their daily lives. These skills were essential to survive one of the most turbulent periods in English history—an era of striking transformation, as the West emerged from the Dark Ages. A leading retainer of five English kings, Marshal served the great figures of this age, from Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine to Richard the Lionheart and his infamous brother John, and was involved in some of the most critical phases of medieval history, from the Magna Carta to the survival of the Angevin/Plantagenet dynasty. Asbridge introduces this storied knight to modern readers and places him firmly in the context of the majesty, passion, and bloody intrigue of the Middle Ages. The Greatest Knight features 16 pages of black-and-white and color illustrations.
