Book excerpt: World War II (often abbreviated to WWII or WW2), also known as the Second World War, was a global war that lasted from 1939 to 1945, although related conflicts began earlier. It involved the vast majority of the world's countries-including all of the great powers-eventually forming two opposing military alliances: the Allies and the Axis. It was the most widespread war in history, and directly involved more than 100 million people from over 30 countries. In a state of "total war", the major participants threw their entire economic, industrial, and scientific capabilities behind the war effort, erasing the distinction between civilian and military resources. Marked by mass deaths of civilians, including the Holocaust (in which approximately 11 million people were killed) and the strategic bombing of industrial and population centres (in which approximately one million were killed, and which included the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki), it resulted in an estimated 50 million to 85 million fatalities. These made World War II the deadliest conflict in human history. Scroll up to the top of the page and click add to cart to learn more

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes claimed that historian Benson J. Lossing did more than any other man to make history interesting and popular. Lossing wrote his comprehensive three-volume history of the Civil War at a time when the facts were still fresh. Originally published in 1867, Volume Two covers the period immediately following the Battle of Bull Run in the summer of 1861 to the summer of 1863 and the fall of Vicksburg. To research this volume, the author traveled several thousand miles to visit principal battlefields of the war. Lossing accompanies his narratives of marches, battles, and sieges with maps and plans, includes biographical sketches of the prominent people from both sides of the conflict, and illustrates his history with hundreds of drawings and engravings by the author and others.

Book The 20 Most Significant Events of the Civil War

Download or read book The 20 Most Significant Events of the Civil War written by Alan Axelrod and published by Skyhorse. This book was released on 2017-08-01 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to not only select the events that most influenced the causes and outcome of America’s Civil War, but also to rank them in order of significance. In each of the book’s 20 detailed essays, author/historian/speaker Alan Axelrod presents an engaging narrative about the event, and also explains how the event shaped the course of the war, and ultimately the future of the country. The author’s selection and ranking criteria include: Effect as cause or trigger of the war Decisiveness: whether it was a war-winning or war-losing event (both in military terms and in terms of public opinion, morale, and support) Magnitude and scope: size and cost of a battle Enduring postwar significance in American history, politics, society, culture and/or in military history and technology From Lincoln’s Inauguration, Antietam, and John Brown’s raid, to the New York draft riots and Stonewall Jackson dying as a result of friendly fire – never before has the Civil War been explored quite this way. The Civil War was a violent argument between the North and the South. The purpose of this book is to start another argument about its history.
