Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Abridgment of the History of New England, for the Use of Young Persons The history of North America exhibits a very different scene. The desire of enjoying religious liberty was the grand object which induced many of the first settlers of that country to encounter a variety of hardships in the wilderness of the new world. The settlements of New England, which are the particular objects of the ensuing history, owe their rise to the religious disputes which attended the reformation in England. Download or read book An Abridgment of the History of New England for the Use of Young Persons written by Hannah Adams and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Abridgment of the History of New-England, for the Use of Young Persons The candid reception which the public have given to the Abridgment of the History of New-England, has induced the compiler to print another edition, with some additions, which she hopes will be received with equal candor. The narrow limits of the work would not permit a particular delineation of the characters of our excellent ancestors; enough, however, she trusts is said to impress the minds of young persons with veneration for those eminent men, to whom their posterity are so highly indebted. In order to understand, more clearly, some parts of this little work, it is necessary for young readers to obtain a general knowledge of the History of England, during the period which it comprises. When they wish for further information respecting the history of their own country, they are referred to those large and valuable works from which the abridgment is collected. For the corrections in the chronology, and some of the additions, the editor is indebted to Dr. Holmes' American Annals, which elegant work is eminently useful to the public in promoting a correct knowledge of the history of the American colonies. The Questions to each chapter, are inserted in the Appendix, in order to render the abridgment more useful for schools. Young people may find answers in the sections referred to; and in this way, imprint upon their memories the leading events in the history of their own country. Book Magic in the Modern World

Download or read book Magic in the Modern World written by Edward Bever and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2017-04-18 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays considers the place of magic in the modern world, first by exploring the ways in which modernity has been defined in explicit opposition to magic and superstition, and then by illuminating how modern proponents of magic have worked to legitimize their practices through an overt embrace of evolving forms such as esotericism and supernaturalism. Taking a two-track approach, this book explores the complex dynamics of the construction of the modern self and its relation to the modern preoccupation with magic. Essays examine how modern “rational” consciousness is generated and maintained and how proponents of both magical and scientific traditions rationalize evidence to fit accepted orthodoxy. This book also describes how people unsatisfied with the norms of modern subjectivity embrace various forms of magic—and the methods these modern practitioners use to legitimate magic in the modern world. A compelling assessment of magic from the early modern period to today, Magic in the Modern World shows how, despite the dominant culture’s emphatic denial of their validity, older forms of magic persist and develop while new forms of magic continue to emerge. In addition to the editors, contributors include Egil Asprem, Erik Davis, Megan Goodwin, Dan Harms, Adam Jortner, and Benedek Láng.
