Book Alaska an Empire in the Making Classic Reprint

Download or read book Alaska an Empire in the Making Classic Reprint written by John Jasper Underwood and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alaska, an Empire in the Making The information contained in this book was gathered during an almost continuous residence of fourteen years in Alaska and the Yukon Territory. Much of this time, it is true, was spent in fishing, hunting, exploring, mining, and various ways other than the acquisition of data. But what has been written is as accurate as it is humanly possible to make it. The writer's notes and observations have been checked up with government reports and other official documents, and the works of Alfred H. Brooks, Chief of the Geological Survey in Alaska, Skidmore's "History of Sitka," Dall's "Resources of Alaska," Senator Sumner's speech on the resources of Alaska, and various documents in the state, treasury and other departments of the government have been freely consulted. It is hoped that it will serve not only as a guide for tourists and sightseers who visit the Northern wonderland, but also that it may contain matters of interest to the stock raiser, the farmer, the miner, the prospector, the investor, and those who may go to Alaska for purposes other than sight-seeing. A few of the photographs herein reproduced were taken by the writer, but the majority of them represent the work of several professional photographers situated in different parts of the Northland. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alaska: The Country and Its Inhabitants It is indeed surprising that so little should be known about a country we have had in our possession for the last eighteen years, and which has attracted more or less attention ever since the time of Russia's great ruler. Peter the Great, who added Russian America to his then wonderfully organized and immense empire. Many are the myths and marvels connected, directly or indirectly, with the history of the discovery of this northern land. After the straits of Magellan were discovered by the intrepid navigator whose name they bear, and taken possession of bv the Spaniards, in whose service the illustrious Portuguese seaman was engaged, the united efforts of rival nations were directed towards finding a passage from the Atlantic to the Pacific, in the northern part of the continent of North America. Download or read book Alaska Its History Climate Natural Resources Classic Reprint written by Hon. A. P. Swineford and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-24 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alaska Its History, Climate Natural Resources The brief history of the discovery and occupa tion of Alaska byxthe Russians, which I have inr corporate'd in this work, has been compiled largely from the records of the russian-ameri can Company, as translated for me by Mr.' George Kostrometinoff. That part relating to the purchase of the country by the United States are matters of Congressional record, which the reader can easily verify by referring to the de bates had in the Senate and House of Represent atives, 1867 8. The remainder, and by far the larger part of the volume, is based upon personal observation and research, made during an official residence of severalyears in the Territory, during which time I personally visited all the different sections referred to for the special purpose of in vestigation and report. Concerning my estimate of the natural resources of these different sec tions, I am wholly content to await the confirma tion that certainly lies withinthe near future. F. Book Alaska and Its Resources Classic Reprint

Download or read book Alaska and Its Resources Classic Reprint written by William Healey Dall and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 676 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alaska and Its Resources The purpose of this volume has been to comprise in a small compass the most valuable part of the present knowledge of Alaska. The writer has specially endeavored to convey as much information as his scope would allow, in regard to the native inhabitants, history, and resources of the country. This end has been kept steadily in view, perhaps at the risk of dulness. The greatest care has been taken to verify such facts as have not come under the personal observation of the writer. Toward this end every accessible work containing information in regard to the country has been consulted in the original. Where authorities have differed, the statements thought most worthy of confidence, or such as best agreed with the experience of the author, have been adopted. Many discrepancies have been reconciled, and not a few errors have been corrected. Mistakes to a certain extent are inevitable, but it is hoped that, in all important points, the statements herein made will stand the test of time and future observation. Many of the conclusions in regard to the natives may seem, to the superficial observer, unwarranted; indeed, the author found, during a second year's experience, that not a few of his earlier impressions were erroneous, and constant intercourse with the natives, during that year while isolated from other white men, enabled him to clear up many doubtful points which previous observations had left unsettled. The geographical information here recorded is, of necessity, partly approximate. With a base upon which to found future observations, it is to be hoped that accurate determination of many points will not long be delayed.
