Book Karl Lueger

Download or read book Karl Lueger written by Richard S. Geehr and published by Wayne State University Press. This book was released on 1990 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A biography of the Christian Social mayor of Vienna (1897-1910). Ch. 5 (p. 171-207), "Running with the Hares, Hunting with the Hounds", discusses Lueger's antisemitism, which many historians have tended to discount. While leaving open the question of Lueger's personal convictions, argues that his antisemitic remarks and those of his party associates exerted an extremely harmful influence which continued through the First Republic and is still felt today, and that only the limitations imposed on him by the Emperor prevented drastic measures against the Jews. Reviews the position of Lueger and the Christian Socialists in the debate over Jews at the university (especially the medical school), the antisemitic productions of Adam Müller-Guttenbrunn's Kaiserjubiläums-Stadttheater (the "Aryan Theater"), and demands for segregation in the public schools.

Book Postwar History Education in Japan and the Germanys

Download or read book Postwar History Education in Japan and the Germanys written by Julian Dierkes and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-12-14 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did East and West Germany and Japan reconstitute national identity after World War II? Did all three experience parallel reactions to national trauma and reconstruction? History education shaped how these nations reconceived their national identities. Because the content of history education was controlled by different actors, history education materials framed national identity in very different ways. In Japan, where the curriculum was controlled by bureaucrats bent on maintaining their purported neutrality, materials focused on the empirical building blocks of history (who? where? what?) at the expense of discussions of historical responsibility. In East Germany, where party cadres controlled the curriculum, students were taught that World War II was a capitalist aberration. In (West) Germany, where teachers controlled the curriculum, students were taught the lessons of shame and then regeneration after historians turned away from grand national narratives. This book shows that constructions of national identity are not easily malleable on the basis of moral and political concerns only, but that they are subject to institutional constraints and opportunities. In an age when post-conflict reconstruction and reconciliation has become a major focus of international policies, the analysis offers important implications for the parallel revision of portrayals of national history and the institutional reconstruction of policy-making regimes.

  • Author : Karlheinz Deschner

Download or read book God and the Fascists written by Karlheinz Deschner and published by Prometheus Books. This book was released on 2013-10-08 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now available in English for the first time, a controversial work that indicts the Vatican for its actions before and during World War II. In the decade preceding the outbreak of World War II, the Vatican made a devil's bargain with fascist leaders. Anticipating that their regimes would eliminate a common enemy--namely Marxist-Leninist communism--two popes essentially collaborated with Hitler, Mussolini, and the fascist dictators in Spain (Franco) and Croatia (Pavelić). This is the damning indictment of this well-researched polemic, which for almost five decades in Germany has sparked controversy, outrage, and furious debate. Now it is available in English for the first time. Many will dismiss Deschner--who himself was raised and educated in a pious Catholic tradition--as someone who is obsessed with exposing the failings of the church of his upbringing. But he has marshaled so many facts and presented them with such painstaking care that his accusations cannot easily be ignored. The sheer weight of the evidence that he has brought together in this book raises a host of questions about a powerful institution that continues to exercise political influence to this day.

Book The Political Orchestra

    Book Details:
  • Author : Fritz Trümpi
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2016-11-07
  • ISBN : 022625142X
  • Pages : 334 pages

Download or read book The Political Orchestra written by Fritz Trümpi and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2016-11-07 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a groundbreaking study of the prestigious Berlin and Vienna Philharmonics during the Third Reich. Making extensive use of archival material, including some discussed here for the first time, Fritz Trümpi offers new insight into the orchestras’ place in the larger political constellation. Trümpi looks first at the decades preceding National Socialist rule, when the competing orchestras, whose rivalry mirrored a larger rivalry between Berlin and Vienna, were called on to represent “superior” Austro-German music and were integrated into the administrative and social structures of their respective cities—becoming vulnerable to political manipulation in the process. He then turns to the Nazi period, when the orchestras came to play a major role in cultural policies. As he shows, the philharmonics, in their own unique ways, strengthened National Socialist dominance through their showcasing of Germanic culture in the mass media, performances for troops and the general public, and fictional representations in literature and film. Accompanying these propaganda efforts was an increasing politicization of the orchestras, which ranged from the dismissal of Jewish members to the programming of ideologically appropriate repertory—all in the name of racial and cultural purity. Richly documented and refreshingly nuanced, The Political Orchestra is a bold exploration of the ties between music and politics under fascism.

Book Innovations and artificial intelligence along the energy industry value chain taking into account data security and data protection

Download or read book Innovations and artificial intelligence along the energy industry value chain taking into account data security and data protection written by Heinz-Adalbert Krebs and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2022-01-01 with total page 814 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The energy industry worldwide is facing one of the most profound changes in its history, which will be accompanied by breakthrough innovations and the exponentially evolving use of artificial intelligence in business processes. In addition to the use of artificial intelligence and AI-supported unmanned systems (on land, at sea and in the air), distributed-ledger-technologies, extended reality and 3D-print based on cyber-physical systems and the Internet of Things, as well as process mining, robotic process automation, data science and cloud computing, for example, will not only decisively shape a sustainable energy supply system in the future, but also accelerate the transformation to energy industry 4.0. At the same time, the increasingly strong networking (smart grid, smart meter, smart home, smart city) of the energy industry and its environment is associated with a growing risk potential, which must be expanded in the future as part of a high-quality cyber resilience, in particular through the use of artificial intelligence. Without the development and use of innovations and artificial intelligence in the context of increasingly digitized business processes, there is a risk that neither the energy transition can be successfully implemented nor climate change combated. In addition to the fundamentals of the classic, primarily analog energy industry, the publication addresses the possible paradigm shift that will be characterized by innovations, disruptive technologies and digital business models in the energy industry.
