Book excerpt: William Gaddis published four novels during his lifetime, immense and complex books that helped inaugurate a new movement in American letters. Now comes his final work of fiction, a subtle, concentrated culmination of his art and ideas. For more than fifty years Gaddis collected notes for a book about the mechanization of the arts, told by way of a social history of the player piano in America. In the years before his death in 1998, he distilled the whole mass into a fiction, a dramatic monologue by an elderly man with a terminal illness. Continuing Gaddis's career-long reflection on those aspects of corporate technological culture that are uniquely destructive of the arts, Agape Agape is a stunning achievement from one of the indisputable masters of postwar American fiction.

Book My Big TOE Awakening Discovery Inner Workings

Download or read book My Big TOE Awakening Discovery Inner Workings written by Thomas Campbell and published by Lightning Strike Books. This book was released on 2007-12 with total page 824 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Section 1 provides a biography of the author pertinent to the creation of this trilogy. This look at the author's unique experience sheds light upon the origins of this work. Section 2 logically justifies the basic conceptual building blocks needed to construct My Big TOE's foundation. It discusses the cultural beliefs that trap our thinking into a narrow and limited conceptualization of reality, defines the fundamentals of Big Pictureepistemology and ontology, and examines the inner-workings and practice of meditation. It defines and develops the two basic assumptions upon which this trilogy is based. From these two assumptions, time, space, consciousness, and the basic properties, purpose, and mechanics of our reality are logically inferred.Section 3 develops the interface and interaction between "we the people"and our digital consciousness reality. It derives and explains the characteristics, origins, dynamics, and function of ego, love, free will, and our larger purpose. It develops the psi uncertainty principle as it explains and interrelates psi phenomena, free will, love, consciousness evolution, physics, reality, human purpose, digital computation, and entropy.Section 4 describes a model of consciousness that develops the results of Section 3 and supports the conclusions of Section 5. The origins and nature of digital consciousness are described along with how artificial intelligence (AI) leads to artificial consciousness, which leads to actual consciousness and to us. It derives our physical universe, our science, and our perception of a physical reality. The physical reality is directly derived from the nature of digital consciousness.Section 5 pulls together Sections 2, 3, and 4 into a model of reality that describes how an apparent nonphysical reality works, interacts, and interrelates with our experience of physical reality. Probable realities, predicting and modifying the future, teleportation, telepathy, multiple physical and nonphysical bodies, and the fractal nature of an evolving digital consciousness reality are explained and described in detail.Section 6 is the wrap-up that puts everything into a personal perspective. It points out My Big TOE's relationship with contemporary science and philosophy. It solidly integrates My Big TOE into traditional Western scientific and philosophical thought.

Book Cyberpragmatics

Download or read book Cyberpragmatics written by Francisco Yus and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2011-08-22 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cyberpragmatics is an analysis of Internet-mediated communication from the perspective of cognitive pragmatics. It addresses a whole range of interactions that can be found on the Net: the web page, chat rooms, instant messaging, social networking sites, 3D virtual worlds, blogs, videoconference, e-mail, Twitter, etc. Of special interest is the role of intentions and the quality of interpretations when these Internet-mediated interactions take place, which is often affected by the textual properties of the medium. The book also analyses the pragmatic implications of transferring offline discourses (e.g. printed paper, advertisements) to the screen-framed space of the Net. And although the main framework is cognitive pragmatics, the book also draws from other theories and models in order to build up a better picture of what really happens when people communicate on the Net. This book will interest analysts doing research on computer-mediated communication, university students and researchers undergoing post-graduate courses or writing a PhD thesis. Book excerpt: 'A wonderfully surprising novel, powered by wit, exuberance and nostalgia.' Chloe Aridjis, author of Sea Monsters A captivating portrait of contemporary Mexico, cut through with dazzling wit and sensitivity It started with a drowning. Deep in the heart of Mexico City, where five houses cluster around a sun-drenched courtyard, lives Ana, a precocious twelve-year-old still coming to terms with the mysterious death of her little sister years earlier. Over the rainy, smoggy summer she decides to plant a vegetable garden in the courtyard, and as she digs the ground and plants her seeds, her neighbors in turn delve into their past. As the ripple effects of grief, childlessness, illness and displacement saturate their stories, secrets seep out and questions emerge – Who was my wife? Why did my mom leave? Can I turn back the clock? And how could a girl who knew how to swim drown? Using five voices to tell the singular story of life in an inner city mews, Umami is a quietly devastating novel of missed encounters, missed opportunities, missed people, and those who are left behind. Compassionate, surprising, funny and inventive, it deftly unpicks their stories to offer a darkly comic portrait of contemporary Mexico, as whimsical as it is heart-wrenching.

Book Schooling for Sustainable Development in South America

Download or read book Schooling for Sustainable Development in South America written by Maria Lucia de Amorim Soares and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-08-24 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book supplies both empirical evidence and scholarly analysis that exemplify successful innovation in South America in the field of sustainability education. Examining the issues from a three-fold perspective, of national policy, regional planning and grassroots projects in schools and communities, the volume offers a comprehensive overview of the contemporary situation in Brazil, Chile, Bolivia, Argentina and Venezuela. It provides case studies as detailed illustrations of the recipe for success as well as to inform researchers and practitioners of the kinds of obstacles and challenges they might face in seeking to manifest sustainability. A good deal of the research and scholarly studies in the field of education for sustainability and sustainable development is underpinned by ‘Western’ norms and culture. This book draws on that literature, yet also teases out features in the case studies that are particular to the region. South America itself encompasses a rich variety of natural and cultural environments—within individual nations as much as continent-wide. This diversity is a recurring theme in the book. The volume’s three sections provide first a general survey, enriched with material from studies conducted in a number of different polities. The second section covers developments in Brazil, South America’s largest nation and one that exhibits many of the features of education for sustainability found across the continent. Part three sets out and explores future trends. As with other books in the Schooling for Sustainable Development series, this volume will add impetus to scholarly exchange as well as contributing insights on education policy and curriculum changes across South American communities that exist in an increasingly globalized world.

  • Pages : 100 pages

Download or read book Alighiero E Boetti written by Alighiero Boetti and published by Jrp Ringier. This book was released on 2010 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alighiero Boetti (1940 ndash; 1994) was an Italian conceptual artist, often associated with Arte Povera. Among his most famous works, the series of embroidered maps of the world, the Mappa, were made from 1971 to his death in 1994. The maps delineate the political boundaries of the countries, with each of them being embroidered with the design of its national flag. Embroidered by artisans in Afghanistan and Pakistan, the maps were the result of a collaborative process which left the design to the geopolitical realities of the time, and the choice of colours to the artisans responsible for the embroidery. 'For me the work of the embroidered 'Mappa' is the maximum of beauty. For that work I did nothing, chose nothing, in the sense that: the world is made as it is, not as I designed it, the flags are those that exist, and I did not design them; in short I did absolutely nothing; when the basic idea, the concept, emerges everything else requires no choosing.' - Alighiero e Boetti, 1974 This book gathers together maps from various periods. It is introduced with an essay by Jean-Christophe Ammann, who is currently working on Boetti's catalogue raisonneacute;. Published with Gladstone Gallery, New York. English and Italian text.

Book Fantasies of the Library

Download or read book Fantasies of the Library written by Anna-Sophie Springer and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2018-08-28 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A book that acts both as library and exhibition space, selecting, arranging, and housing texts and images, aligning itself with printed matter in the process. Fantasies of the Library lets readers experience the library anew. The book imagines, and enacts, the library as both keeper of books and curator of ideas—as a platform of the future. One essay occupies the right-hand page of a two-page spread while interviews scrolls independently on the left. Bibliophilic artworks intersect both throughout the book-as-exhibition. A photo essay, “Reading Rooms Reading Machines” further interrupts the book in order to display images of libraries (old and new, real and imagined), and readers (human and machine) and features work by artists including Kader Atta, Wafaa Bilal, Mark Dion, Rodney Graham, Katie Paterson, Veronika Spierenburg, and others. The book includes an essay on the institutional ordering principles of book collections; a conversation with the proprietors of the Prelinger Library in San Francisco; reflections on the role of cultural memory and the archive; and a dialogue with a new media theorist about experiments at the intersection of curatorial practice and open source ebooks. The reader emerges from this book-as-exhibition with the growing conviction that the library is not only a curatorial space but a bibliological imaginary, ripe for the exploration of consequential paginated affairs. The physicality of the book—and this book—“resists the digital,” argues coeditor Etienne Turpin, “but not in a nostalgic way.” Contributors Erin Kissane, Hammad Nasar, Megan Shaw Prelinger, Rick Prelinger, Anna-Sophie Springer, Charles Stankievech, Katharina Tauer, Etienne Turpin, Andrew Norman Wilson, Joanna Zylinska

Book Light heat and sound in Robert Grosseteste s Physics

This book was released on 2016-11-28 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Grosseteste was one of the most prominent thinkers of the Thirteenth Century. Philosopher and scientist, he was Bishop of Lincoln from 1235 to 1253. He was heavily influenced by Augustine, whose thought permeates his writings, but he also made extensive use of the thought of Aristotle, Avicenna and Averroes. Grosseteste's physics is the science of Nature, of which we will discuss in this book. This science is quite different from the Galilean physics. However, in the scientific treatises written by Grosseteste, we find some features preparing the born of the new physics that produced the Galilean revolution and the Newtonian mechanics. This is the reason why Robert Grosseteste, English statesman, philosopher and scientist, is defined by Alistair Cameron Crombie as the real founder of the tradition of the scientific thought in Oxford. In this book we will propose a discussion of this Grosseteste's physics, in particular that which in described in his treatises on light, heat and sound.
