Book The Kiss of Peace Ritual Self and Society in the High and Late Medieval West

Download or read book The Kiss of Peace Ritual Self and Society in the High and Late Medieval West written by Kiril Petkov and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2003-06-01 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reveals the social logic of the medieval rituals of reconciliation as showcased by the most potent rite, the kiss of peace. Ritual is presented as a contested ground on which individuals, groups, and political and moral authorities competed for and appropriated political sovereignty. The thesis of the study is that by employing ritual and bodily mnemonics as strategic tools, the forces of order and official morality strove to organize personality structures around a hegemonic value system. Researching three analytical fields—the legal bonds of peace, the emotional economy of ritual, and the building of identity—the book highlights the contents and evolution of ritual reconciliation in diverse cultural contexts in the period between the eleventh and the sixteenth centuries.

Book In Pursuit of Poem Shadows

Download or read book In Pursuit of Poem Shadows written by Kay Pritchett and published by Bucknell University Press. This book was released on 2011-04-07 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Pursuit of Poem Shadows: Pureza Canelo's Second Poetics deciphers the intricate poetic language of Pureza Canelo (Spain, 1946) through a close analysis of her mature works. Designed to complement Nature's Colloquy with the Word (Bucknell, 2004), the current text traces concerns related to the poet's second stage of evolvement. In contextualizing the poet's work, Pritchett discovers commonalities with Romantic, Modernist, and creacionista poets. Canelo's insights, moreover, display a resemblance to Heidegger's thought on time, being, and poetry, Lacan's ideas on experience and language, and 3iyek's view of the subject's relationship to the object.

Book Bachata and Dominican Identity La bachata y la identidad dominicana

Download or read book Bachata and Dominican Identity La bachata y la identidad dominicana written by Julie A. Sellers and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-09-24 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bachata--a guitar-based romantic music that debuted in Santo Domingo's urban shantytowns in the 1960s--is today one of the hottest Latin genres. Still, fans and musicians have not forgotten the social stigma the genre carried for decades. This book interweaves bachata's history and development with the socio-political context of Dominican identity. The author argues that its early disfavor resulted from the political climate of its origins and ties between class and race, and proposes that its ultimate acceptance as a symbol of Dominican identity arose from its innovations, the growth of the lower class, and a devoted following among Dominican migrants.

Book Confronting Patriarchy

Download or read book Confronting Patriarchy written by Mary Boufis Filou and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2009 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Confronting Patriarchy: Psychoanalytic Theory in the Prose of Cristina Peri Rossi examines three works of the contemporary Uruguayan author who lives in exile as she dialogues with the psychoanalytic discourse endemic to patriarchal society. Peri Rossi's prose, structured like unconscious productions that give free expression to desire and passion as emanating from the forbidden recesses of the psyche, powerfully reveals the message as a treatment for an «ill» society. The language in the three works studied facilitates and reveals the male protagonist's interaction with the desired female object as a regression to a semiotic, pre-oedipal state in a type of «return of the repressed» of consuming desire that has been written out of mainstream patriarchy and that serves to challenge its rational, symbolic order. It is from this vantage point that the author attempts to re-write the conclusions obtained through Lacanian and patriarchal discourse so that woman can emerge as a subject in her own right.

Book excerpt: In Secrets of Pinar’s Game, Roger Boase is the first to decipher a card game completed in 1496 for Queen Isabel, Prince Juan, her daughters and her 40 court ladies. This game offers readers access to the cultural memory of a group of educated women, revealing their knowledge of proverbs, poetry and sentimental romance, their understanding of the symbolism of birds and trees, and many facts ignored in official sources. Boase translates all verse into English, reassesses the jousting invenciones in the Cancionero general (1511), reinterprets the poetry of Pinar’s sister Florencia, and identifies Acevedo, author of some poems about festivities in Murcia c. 1507. He demonstrates that many of Pinar’s ladies reappear as prostitutes in the anonymous Carajicomedia two decades later.
