Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a history of all branches of Mennonites (including the Amish) from their first arrival in the state of Illinois around 1830 to the present. It deals briefly with Mennonite origins in Europe in the 16th century, points out how the Amish split off from the Mennonites in the 1690s, and depicts Mennonite-Amish migrations to America, especially those who came in the 19th century and settled in Illinois. The work portrays the divisions that developed, mostly after the Civil War, and how the story became more complex. It describes the effect of the AwakeningÓ and the influence of Fundamentalism and other forces on the Illinois Mennonites, including the pressures toward American acculturation. The author points out also the significant trend toward cooperation and unity in recent decades, especially among the (Old) Mennonites and the General Conference Mennonites. Smith is uniquely qualified to write this book. He is a native of Illinois with a thorough knowledge and understanding of the customs and beliefs of Illinois Mennonites. His family was among the early Mennonite settlers in the state, and active in the spiritual life of their community. Smith himself has studied and thought history for many years, has written many historical articles, and is the author or several books. As a professor at Goshen College, he had the support of other Mennonite historians and ready access to library and archival material relating to Illinois Mennonites.

Book American Foreign Missions to the Oriental Churches Vol 1 2

Download or read book American Foreign Missions to the Oriental Churches Vol 1 2 written by Rufus Anderson and published by e-artnow. This book was released on 2021-05-07 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book features the most important missions of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions to the Oriental Churches. The missions may be regarded as seven or eight in number; considering the Palestine and Syria missions as really but one, and the several Armenian missions as also one. The history of the Syria mission, in its connection with the American Board, covers a period of fifty-one years; that of the Nestorian, thirty-seven; that of the Greek mission, forty-three; of the Assyrian (as a separate mission), ten; of the Armenian mission, forty; and of the Bulgarian, twelve. The mission to the Jews, extending through thirty years, was so intimately connected with these, as to demand a place in the series; while the facts scattered through half a century, illustrating the influence exerted on the Mohammedans, were such as to require a separate embodiment. Missions were for: converting lost men, organizing them into churches, giving these churches a competent native ministry, conducting them to the stage of independence and (in most cases) of self-propagation.

Book By Faith They Went Out

Download or read book By Faith They Went Out written by Wilbert R. Shenk and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this collection of essays, Wilbert Shenk surveys and synthesizes aspects of the Mennonite experience in mission. He traces the mission impulse of early Anabaptism, and documents the impact of subsequent historical developments, from persecution and withdrawal, through Pietist and evangelical revival, to the globalization of the church in the twentieth century. Shenk identifies North American Mennonite/Brethren in Christ ambivalence toward mission, and reminds readers that mission has the potential to provide focus and relevance to a church struggling for identity and meaning. In the books final essay, Shenk lays a foundation for a Mennonite theology of mission that is both biblical and consonant with Anabaptist tradition.
