Book From Tinseltown to Bordertown

    Book Details:
  • Author : Celestino Deleyto
  • Publisher : Wayne State University Press
  • Release : 2017-04-03
  • ISBN : 0814339867
  • Pages : 279 pages

Download or read book From Tinseltown to Bordertown written by Celestino Deleyto and published by Wayne State University Press. This book was released on 2017-04-03 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Close readings that look for "the real Los Angeles" in a selection of contemporary movies. Los Angeles is a global metropolis whose history and social narrative is linked to one of its top exports: cinema. L.A. appears on screen more than almost any city since Hollywood and is home to the American film industry. Historically, conversations of social and racial homogeneity have dominated the construction of Los Angeles as a cosmopolitan city, with Hollywood films largely contributing to this image. At the same time, the city is also known for its steady immigration, social inequalities, and exclusionary urban practices, not dissimilar to any other borderland in the world. The Spanish names and sounds within the city are paradoxical in relation to the striking invisibility of its Hispanic residents at many economic, social, and political levels, given their vast numbers. Additionally, the impact of the 1992 Los Angeles riots left the city raw, yet brought about changing discourses and provided Hollywood with the opportunity to rebrand its hometown by projecting to the world a new image in which social uniformity is challenged by diversity. It is for this reason that author Celestino Deleyto decided to take a closer look at how the quintessential cinematic city contributes to the ongoing creation of its own representation on the screen. From Tinseltown to Bordertown: Los Angeles on Film starts from the theoretical premise that place matters. Deleyto sees film as predominantly a spatial system and argues that the space of film and the space of reality are closely intertwined in complex ways and that we should acknowledge the potential of cinema to intervene in the historical process of the construction of urban space, as well as its ability to record place. The author asks to what extent this is also the city that is being constructed by contemporary movies. From Tinseltown to Bordertown offers a unique combination of urban, cultural, and border theory, as well as the author's direct observation and experience of the city's social and human geography with close readings of a selection of films such as Falling Down, White Men Can't Jump, and Collateral. Through these textual analyses, Deleyto tries to situate filmic narratives of Los Angeles within the city itself and find a sense of the "real place" in their fictional fabrications. While in a certain sense, Los Angeles movies continue to exist within the rather exclusive boundaries of Tinseltown, the special borderliness of the city is becoming more and more evident in cinematic stories. Deleyto's monograph is a fascinating case study on one of the United States' most enigmatic cities. Film scholars with an interest in history and place will appreciate this book.

Book The Distant Shores of Freedom

Download or read book The Distant Shores of Freedom written by Subarno Chattarji and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-11-18 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Distant Shores of Freedom analyses literary works in English written by Vietnamese refugees in the US. Fiction and memoirs by Vietnamese Americans recover stories and memories that are often different from mainstream American ones and that difference enables readers to think of the US war in Vietnam from perspectives that are missing in mainstream representations. Dwelling not only on the war and its aftermaths, Vietnamese American writings also ponder over the existential issues of exile; the idea of home; the pain of marginality and racism; the question of community formation within the US; and the complexity of diasporic lives. Subarno Chattarji raises critical questions such as who gets to speak and write, and to what ends and purposes? Who reads Vietnamese American writings and how can we account for these publications in the US over a period of time? What can and cannot be written or spoken? What is remembered and what is silenced? What traumas and memories are articulated? These questions point towards a larger context of diaspora studies as well as 'the rituals of cultural memory' that complicate our understanding of the Vietnam War and its aftermaths.

  • Release : 2019-01-22
  • ISBN : 0429657048

Book excerpt: In all cognitive domains, neuropsychological research has advanced through the study of individual patients, and detailed observations and descriptions of their cases have been the backbone of medical and scientific reports for centuries. Cases of Amnesia describes some of the most important single case studies in the history of memory, as well as new case studies of amnesic patients. It highlights the major contribution they make to our understanding of human memory and neuropsychology. Written by world-leading researchers and considering the latest theory and techniques in the field, each case study provides a description of the patient's history, how their memory was assessed and what conclusions can be made in relation to cognitive models of memory. Edited by Sarah E. MacPherson and Sergio Della Sala, Cases of Amnesia is a must read for researchers and clinicians in neuropsychology, cognitive psychology and cognitive neuroscience.

Book Theories of Organic Amnesia

Download or read book Theories of Organic Amnesia written by Andrew Richard Mayes and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Enough has been learnt about the organic amnesia syndrome for research to be driven by theoretical ideas about the possible causes of the memory deficits underlying it. These theoretical ideas attempt to specify whether one or several distinct functional deficits cause the memory problems typically seen in the syndrome, what the precise nature of these deficits actually is, and what is the exact location of the lesions that cause them.; This special issue of "Memory" is devoted to articles that advance different accounts of some or all of the features of amnesia. It highlights that, although there is still no full agreement about the neuroanatomy of amnesia, whether it is a unitary condition, and the causes of and relationship between anterograde and retrograde amnesia, many theories converge in suggesting that damage to the hippocampus and its connections dirupts aspects of memory for complex associations that are ultimately represented in the neocortex.

Book Computational Probability and Mathematical Modeling

Download or read book Computational Probability and Mathematical Modeling written by José Roberto Cantú-González and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2019-12-24 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the present time, two of the most important approaches to tackle complex systems are probability and stochastic processes theory. Still from an analytic perspective, modeling and solving a problem using a stochastic approach is not a trivial issue, hence, a combination of the logic of probabilistic reasoning with computational science is needed to obtain qualitatively good solutions in a reasonable time. This eBook presents an interesting view of applications associated to fields of probability, statistics, and mathematic modeling, all of them supported by a computational context though the approach of stochasticity and simulation used in most of them. This collection contains three chapters, which bring applications in fields of biology, finance and physics, each chapter contains work(s) with specific applications. An editorial is also contained with a summarized version of each work, and each of them are widely explained in a specific section, which include a state of art to support the nature of the individual research, a methodology to solve the defined problem and the results and conclusions. We hope the present eBook can represent a potential source of knowledge for the academic community of implicated disciplines, and an inspirational starting point of starting for scientists in the amazing world of applied mathematics and the search to solve complex problems

Book Transient Global Amnesia

Download or read book Transient Global Amnesia written by A.J. Larner and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-06-10 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This extensively revised second edition provides a comprehensive overview of transient global amnesia (TGA). First, it deals with the history of TGA before moving on to clinical and diagnostic features and differential diagnosis. Subsequent chapters then discuss the investigation and predisposing and precipitating factors for TGA before attempting to synthesise these many strands in order to formulate ideas about the pathogenesis of TGA. Each of the chapters is devoted to a practical and structured overview of the particular topic, with use of case studies to illustrate the material. Based in part on the author’s experience of TGA cases over 20 years and in part on a review of the published literature, this book will hopefully enlighten clinicians from a broad range of medical backgrounds on the clinical features, investigation, and pathogenesis of TGA. Transient Global Amnesia is aimed at any clinician with an interest in, or who encounters patients with, acute amnesia: neurologists, general physicians, old age psychiatrists, geriatricians, clinical neuropsychologists, and primary care physicians, as well as other professions allied to medicine with similar interests, such as members of memory assessment teams.
