Book Nitrogen in the Environment Sources Problems and Management

Download or read book Nitrogen in the Environment Sources Problems and Management written by R.F. Follett and published by Gulf Professional Publishing. This book was released on 2001-12-03 with total page 539 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nitrogen in the Environment: Sources, Problems, and Management is the first volume to provide a holistic perspective and comprehensive treatment of nitrogen from field, to ecosystem, to treatment of urban and rural drinking water supplies, while also including a historical overview, human health impacts and policy considerations. It provides a worldwide perspective on nitrogen and agriculture. Nitrogen is one of the most critical elements required in agricultural systems for the production of crops for feed, food and fiber. The ever-increasing world population requires increasing use of nitrogen in agriculture to supply human needs for dietary protein. Worldwide demand for nitrogen will increase as a direct response to increasing population. Strategies and perspectives are considered to improve nitrogen-use efficiency. Issues of nitrogen in crop and human nutrition, and transport and transformations along the continuum from farm field to ground water, watersheds, streams, rivers, and coastal marine environments are discussed. Described are aerial transport of nitrogen from livestock and agricultural systems and the potential for deposition and impacts. The current status of nitrogen in the environment in selected terrestrial and coastal environments and crop and forest ecosystems and development of emerging technologies to minimize nitrogen impacts on the environment are addressed. The nitrogen cycle provides a framework for assessing broad scale or even global strategies to improve nitrogen use efficiency. Growing human populations are the driving force that requires increased nitrogen inputs. These increasing inputs into the food-production system directly result in increased livestock and human-excretory nitrogen contribution into the environment. The scope of this book is diverse, covering a range of topics and issues from furthering our understanding of nitrogen in the environment to policy considerations at both farm and national scales.

Book An Introduction to Statistical Thermodynamics

Download or read book An Introduction to Statistical Thermodynamics written by Robert Paul Holland Gasser and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1995 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Statistical thermodynamics plays a vital linking role between quantum theory and chemical thermodynamics, yet students often find the subject unpalatable. In this updated version of a popular text, the authors overcome this by emphasising the concepts involved, in particular demystifying the partition function. They do not get bogged down in the mathematical niceties that are essential for a profound study of the subject but which can confuse the beginner. Strong emphasis is placed on the physical basis of statistical thermodynamics and the relations with experiment. After a clear exposition of the distribution laws, partition functions, heat capacities, chemical equilibria and kinetics, the subject is further illuminated by a discussion of low-temperature phenomena and spectroscopy. The coverage is brought right up to date with a chapter on computer simulation and a final section which ranges beyond the narrow limits usually associated with student texts to emphasise the common dependence of macroscopic behaviour on the properties of constituent atoms and molecules.Since first published in 1974 as ?Entropy and Energy Levels?, the book has been very popular with students. This revised and updated version will no doubt serve the same needs.

Book Handbook of Ion Chromatography

Download or read book Handbook of Ion Chromatography written by Joachim Weiss and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2016-06-24 with total page 1576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This three-volume handbook is the standard reference in the field, unparalleled in its comprehensiveness. It covers every conceivable topic related to the expanding and increasingly important field of ion chromatography. The fourth edition is completely updated and revised to include the latest developments in the instrumentation, now stretching to three volumes to reflect the current state of applications. Ion chromatography is one of the most widely used separation techniques of analytical chemistry with applications in fields such as medicinal chemistry, water chemistry and materials science. Consequently, the number of users of this method is continuously growing, underlining the need for an up-to-date reference. A true pioneer of this method, Joachim Weiss studied chemistry at the Technical University of Berlin (Germany), where he also received his PhD degree in Analytical Chemistry. In 2002, he did his habilitation in Analytical Chemistry at the Leopold-Franzens University in Innsbruck (Austria), where he is also teaching liquid chromatography. Since 1982, Dr. Weiss has worked at Dionex (now being part of Thermo Fisher Scientific), where he currently holds the position of Technical Director for Dionex Products within the Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry Division (CMD) of Thermo Fisher Scientific, located in Dreieich (Germany).
