Book India s New Independent Cinema

Download or read book India s New Independent Cinema written by Ashvin Immanuel Devasundaram and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-06-10 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first-ever book on the rise of the new wave of independent Indian films that is revolutionising Indian cinema. Contemporary scholarship on Indian cinema so far has focused asymmetrically on Bollywood—India’s dominant cultural export. Reversing this trend, this book provides an in-depth examination of the burgeoning independent Indian film sector. It locates the new 'Indies' as a glocal hybrid film form—global in aesthetic and local in content. They critically engage with a diverse socio-political spectrum of ‘state of the nation’ stories; from farmer suicides, disenfranchised urban youth and migrant workers to monks turned anti-corporation animal rights agitators. This book provides comprehensive analyses of definitive Indie new wave films including Peepli Live (2010), Dhobi Ghat (2010), The Lunchbox (2013) and Ship of Theseus (2013). It explores how subversive Indies, such as polemical postmodern rap-musical Gandu (2010) transgress conventional notions of ‘traditional Indian values’, and collide with state censorship regulations. This timely and pioneering analysis shows how the new Indies have emerged from a middle space between India’s globalising present and traditional past. This book draws on in-depth interviews with directors, actors, academics and members of the Indian censor board, and is essential reading for anyone seeking an insight into a current Indian film phenomenon that could chart the future of Indian cinema.

Book The Science of the Dogon

    Book Details:
  • Author : Laird Scranton
  • Publisher : Simon and Schuster
  • Release : 2006-09-22
  • ISBN : 1594777780
  • Pages : 252 pages

Download or read book The Science of the Dogon written by Laird Scranton and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2006-09-22 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A look at the close resemblance between the creation and structure of matter in both Dogon mythology and modern science • Reveals striking similarities between Dogon symbols and those used in both the Egyptian and Hebrew religions • Demonstrates the parallels between Dogon mythical narratives and scientific concepts from atomic theory to quantum theory and string theory The Dogon people of Mali, West Africa, are famous for their unique art and advanced cosmology. The Dogon’s creation story describes how the one true god, Amma, created all the matter of the universe. Interestingly, the myths that depict his creative efforts bear a striking resemblance to the modern scientific definitions of matter, beginning with the atom and continuing all the way to the vibrating threads of string theory. Furthermore, many of the Dogon words, symbols, and rituals used to describe the structure of matter are quite similar to those found in the myths of ancient Egypt and in the daily rituals of Judaism. For example, the modern scientific depiction of the informed universe as a black hole is identical to Amma’s Egg of the Dogon and the Egyptian Benben Stone. The Science of the Dogon offers a case-by-case comparison of Dogon descriptions and drawings to corresponding scientific definitions and diagrams from authors like Stephen Hawking and Brian Greene, then extends this analysis to the counterparts of these symbols in both the ancient Egyptian and Hebrew religions. What is ultimately revealed is the scientific basis for the language of the Egyptian hieroglyphs, which was deliberately encoded to prevent the knowledge of these concepts from falling into the hands of all but the highest members of the Egyptian priesthood. The Science of the Dogon also offers compelling new interpretations for many of the most familiar Egyptian symbols, such as the pyramid and the scarab, and presents new explanations for the origins of religiously charged words such as Jehovah and Satan.

Book Time Currents

Download or read book Time Currents written by Fred W. Dejavanne and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2012-09 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: TIME CURRENTS Surfing the waves of paradox Time travel needn't be a stretch. We're all time travelers. In our waking world, we seem to "travel" or ride on a shared vector -- the time axis -- moving into the future at a fixed rate with all our companions. Have we left an inalterable past behind us? Know that as Spaceship Earth courses through the ocean of spacetime, it leaves a traceable, luminous trail in its wake. Therein lies the first secret of the physics of time travel. When the body sleeps, we awaken to ourselves and to our true power under the sway of a wiser and nobler part of us -- an unsleeping creative being within -- whose hand is on a time rheostat of unlimited range in which a second can be an hour and a minute a year, utterly real on our own timeline. For the physicist, this creative imaging faculty, operating in massless diachronic space, possesses electrical reality, and consists in the excitation of an internal spatiotemporal field, volitionally controlled and executed, and fully consonant with natural law. Therein lies the second secret. At Area 51, they could not have known the magnitude and the scale of the forces that they were about to unleash. Luckily, the Nommo, their extraterrestrial guest, knew more. Therein lies the tale. The author doesn't fl aunt his erudition, which is legendary, but you quickly discover it on your own as your mind grows and expands in the minds of the characters at Area 51. Prof. deJavanne has a rare gift for making complex and subtle ideas easy to understand - and fun. Dr. Robert A. Rose, Rewiring your Brain Time Currents is distinguishable from your everyday space opera by the sheer magnitude of what is at stake, the depth of the characters, rock solid science, and the villains you will love to hate. It is an engaging story with a surprise ending. Hugh J. Thompson, Creative Linguistics Time Currents is a tale of two epochs, a century apart, bridged by an authentic genius, a gorgeous, sensual Russian beauty, a brilliant inventor and an alien. It is both entertaining and thought provoking. But beware: if you follow the science and the logic too closely you may start believing it. That just won't do! After all, it is fi ction. Isn't it? Download or read book Coolies of the Empire written by Ashutosh Kumar and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book studies Indian overseas labour migration in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, which involved millions of Indians traversing the globe in the age of empire, subsequent to the abolition of slavery in 1833. This migration led to the presence of Indians and their culture being felt all over the world. This study delves deep into the lives of these indentured workers from India who called themselves girmitiyas; it is a narrative of their experiences in India and in the sugar colonies abroad. It foregrounds the alternative world view of the girmitiyas, and their socio-cultural and religious life in the colonies. In this book, the author has developed highly original insights into the experience of colonial indentured migrant labour, describing the ways in which migrants managed to survive and even flourish within the interstices of the indentured labour system and how considerably the experience of migration changed over time.

Download or read book The Gendered Body in South Asia written by Meenakshi Malhotra and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-09-14 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book situates the discourse on the gendered body within the rapidly transitioning South Asian socio-economic and cultural landscape. It critically analyzes gender politics from different disciplinary perspectives including psychoanalysis, post-structuralism, post-colonialism and law among others. Enriched by contributions from well-known South Asian feminist scholars, this book discusses themes such as democracy and dissent, citizenship and violence and how the female body has historically been used in these discussions as a shield and a weapon. It also focuses on technology and misogyny, the politics of veiling and unveiling, the body of the Muslim women in contemporary India as well as bodies which are marginalized or labelled transgressive or monstrous. The chapters in the volume showcase the complexities, convergences and divergences which exist in the conception and understanding of the gendered body, sexuality and gender roles in different socio-cultural spaces in South Asia and how women negotiate these boundaries. Topical and comprehensive, this book will be useful for scholars and researchers of gender studies, sociology, political sociology, social anthropology, cultural studies, post-colonial studies and South Asian studies.

Book Red Lipstick The Men in My Life HB

Download or read book Red Lipstick The Men in My Life HB written by Laxmi and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2016-08-16 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world keeps taunting him as girlish but the fact is that, biologically, he is a boy. And, he is always attracted to guys. Is Laxmi both a man and a woman? Or, perhaps, neither a man nor a woman? The first inklings and stirrings of lust that Laxmi remembers came from noticing big, strong arms, the hint of a guy's moustache over his lips, billboards that advertised men's underwear. Laxmi found this puzzling initially. Was there a woman inside him who couldn't really express herself because of some last-minute mix-up that god did at the time of his birth? Struggling with such existential questions, Laxmi Narayan Tripathi, eminent transgender activist, awakens to her true self: She is Laxmi, a hijra. In this fascinating narrative Laxmi unravels her heart to tell the stories of the men-creators, preservers, lovers, benefactors, and abusers-in her life. Racy, unapologetic, dark and exceptionally honest, these stories open a window to a brave new world.

Book The Mystery of Skara Brae

Download or read book The Mystery of Skara Brae written by Laird Scranton and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2016-11-15 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation of the origins of the Neolithic farming village on Orkney Island • Reveals the striking similarities between Skara Brae and the traditions of pre-dynastic ancient Egypt as preserved by the Dogon people of Mali • Explains how megalithic stone sites near Skara Brae conform to Dogon cosmology • Examines the similarities between Skara Brae and Gobekli Tepe and how Skara Brae may have been a secondary center of learning for the ancient world In 3200 BC, Orkney Island off the coast of Northern Scotland was home to a small farming village called Skara Brae. For reasons unknown, after nearly six centuries of continuous habitation, the village was abandoned around 2600 BC and its stone structures covered over--perhaps deliberately, like the structures at Gobekli Tepe. Although now well-excavated, very little is known about the peaceful people who lived at Skara Brae or their origins. Who were they and where did they go? Drawing on his in-depth knowledge of the connections between the cosmology and linguistics of Egyptian, Dogon, Chinese, and Vedic traditions, Laird Scranton reveals the striking similarities between Skara Brae and the Dogon of Mali, who still practice the same cosmology and traditions they once shared with pre-dynastic Egypt. He shows how the earliest Skara Brae houses match the typical Dogon stone house as well as Schwaller de Lubicz’s intrepretation of the Egyptian Temple of Man at Luxor. He explains how megalithic stone sites near Skara Brae conform to Dogon cosmology, each representing sequential stages of creation as described by Dogon priests, and he details how the houses at Skara Brae also represent a concept of creation. Citing a linguistic phenomenon known as “ultraconserved words,” the author compares words of the Faroese language at Skara Brae, a language with no known origin, with important cosmological words from Dogon and ancient Egyptian traditions, finding obvious connections and similarities. Scranton shows how the cultivated field alongside the village of Skara Brae corresponds to the “heavenly field” symbolism pervasive throughout many ancient cultures, such as the Field of Reeds of the ancient Egyptians and the Elysian Fields of ancient Greece. He demonstrates how Greek and Egyptian geographic descriptions of these fields are a consistent match with Orkney Island. Examining the similarities between Skara Brae and Gobekli Tepe, Scranton reveals that Skara Brae may have been a secondary center of initiation and civilizing knowledge, a long-lost Egyptian mystery school set up millennia after Gobekli Tepe was ritually buried, and given the timing of the site, is possibly the source of the first pharaohs and priests of ancient Egypt.
