Book The Future Was Here

Download or read book The Future Was Here written by Jimmy Maher and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2018-01-26 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring the often-overlooked history and technological innovations of the world's first true multimedia computer. Long ago, in 1985, personal computers came in two general categories: the friendly, childish game machine used for fun (exemplified by Atari and Commodore products); and the boring, beige adult box used for business (exemplified by products from IBM). The game machines became fascinating technical and artistic platforms that were of limited real-world utility. The IBM products were all utility, with little emphasis on aesthetics and no emphasis on fun. Into this bifurcated computing environment came the Commodore Amiga 1000. This personal computer featured a palette of 4,096 colors, unprecedented animation capabilities, four-channel stereo sound, the capacity to run multiple applications simultaneously, a graphical user interface, and powerful processing potential. It was, Jimmy Maher writes in The Future Was Here, the world's first true multimedia personal computer. Maher argues that the Amiga's capacity to store and display color photographs, manipulate video (giving amateurs access to professional tools), and use recordings of real-world sound were the seeds of the digital media future: digital cameras, Photoshop, MP3 players, and even YouTube, Flickr, and the blogosphere. He examines different facets of the platform—from Deluxe Paint to AmigaOS to Cinemaware—in each chapter, creating a portrait of the platform and the communities of practice that surrounded it. Of course, Maher acknowledges, the Amiga was not perfect: the DOS component of the operating systems was clunky and ill-matched, for example, and crashes often accompanied multitasking attempts. And Commodore went bankrupt in 1994. But for a few years, the Amiga's technical qualities were harnessed by engineers, programmers, artists, and others to push back boundaries and transform the culture of computing.

Download or read book The Ultimate Guide to Amiga Pd Games written by Christian Clarke and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-11-16 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite its untimely bankruptcy in 1994, the Commodore range of Amiga computers still prove a popular choice of hardware for bedroom programmers to create games on with some still developing software for release in 2014. The best selling Amiga 500 model was released in 1987 and its popularity led to hundreds if not thousands of public domain (PD) and shareware games being released, with many titles being superior to their commercial rivals. This book showcases the very best of these games as well as those released on Commodore's financially doomed successor, the Amiga 1200. Contained within the pages of this book are 200 mini reviews of arcade perfect conversions, high quality point and click adventures, classic beat em ups, adrenaline pumping shooters and charming 2D platform games. There are also many innovative titles which could only be found within the PD / shareware market, such as Jeff Minter's Revenge of the Mutant Camels, where you control a camel firing at exploding sheep and skiing kangaroos. The book also contains two exclusive interviews with Amiga shareware programmers David Cruickshank and Michael Welch, the talent behind shareware classics Alien Fish Finger and Scorched Tanks. For Amiga fans, this book is must have reference book providing key information on over twenty five years of shareware / PD releases. For those interested in gaming generally the book contains a rich history of games, many of which have been developed and transported to modern technology, especially the booming mobile phone game market.

Book excerpt: This manual provides easy to follow, step-by-step instruction in the use of various graphic, animation and video production software for the Commodore Amiga personal computer. The manual assumes that the user knows nothing about computers so each step and its consequences are explained completely from turning on the computer to saving a disk and printing the screen image. Many excellent programs have been designed for the Amiga which are compatible with each other sharing the IFF format. They may be used to create art by computer without prior computer experience or any knowledge of programming. This manual introduces some of these programs and present applications for their use. In addition various hardware peripherals are described which allow multi-media and video production. The book should be used with the various programs operating as their own illustrations on the monitor screen. The final chapter is a gallery of computer generated images.

Bruce Bastian, a Brigham Young University (BYU) graduate student, and BYU computer science professor Dr. Alan Ashton joined forces to design a word processing system for the city of Orem's Data General Corp. minicomputer system in 1979. Bastian and Ashton kept the rights to the WordPerfect software they designed for Orem, deciding to market it through their own company. Ashton and Bastian started Satellite Systems International (SSI) to sell WordPerfect in 1980. WordPerfect 1.0 represented a significant departure from the previous Wang standard for word processing. At the height of its popularity in the early to mid 1980s, it was a dominant player in the word processor market, but has long since been eclipsed in number of users by Microsoft Word. While available in DOS and Microsoft Windows versions, its popularity was based in part on the fact that it was available for a wide variety of computers and operating systems, including Mac OS, Linux, the Apple IIe, a separate version for the...
