Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Notre-Dame of Amiens is one of the great Gothic cathedrals. Its construction began in 1220, and artistic production in the Gothic mode lasted well into the sixteenth century. In this magisterial chronicle, Stephen Murray invites readers to see the cathedral as more than just a thing of the past: it is a living document of medieval Christian society that endures in our own time. Murray tells the cathedral’s story from the overlapping perspectives of the social groups connected to it, exploring the ways that the layfolk who visit the cathedral occasionally, the clergy who use it daily, and the artisans who created it have interacted with the building over the centuries. He considers the cycles of human activity around the cathedral and shows how groups of makers and users have been inextricably intertwined in collaboration and, occasionally, conflict. The book travels around and through the spaces of the cathedral, allowing us to re-create similar passages by our medieval predecessors. Murray reveals the many worlds of the cathedral and brings them together in the architectural triumph of its central space. A beautifully illustrated account of a grand, historically and religiously important building from a variety of perspectives and in a variety of time periods, this book offers readers a memorable tour of Notre-Dame of Amiens that celebrates the cathedral’s eight hundredth anniversary. Notre-Dame of Amiens is enhanced by high-resolution images, liturgical music, and animations embedded in an innovative website.

Book excerpt: In 1801 Britain and Bonaparte made an armistice, which became the Treaty of Amiens in March 1802. In the brief period of peace which followed, British attitudes underwent a major change, so that when war began again in May 1803 there was little or no dissent from the view that the war had to be fought to a finish and Bonaparte's power destroyed. This was partly the result of Bonaparte's underhand methods during negotiations; but it was also due to the conclusion reached by the many British visitors to France during the interval of peace that Bonaparte was extremely dangerous, anger at his stealthy political advances in Europe and America, and outrage at his detention and imprisonment of British civilians when war began again. The attitude of the British government headed by Henry Addington, and in particular the diplomatic methods of the Foreign Secretary Lord Hawkesbury (later the Prime Minister Lord Liverpool) were decisive in countering Bonaparte's methods; they receive their due in this first detailed examination of events, based on original materials.

Book excerpt: A study of manuscript illumination in Amiens in the late Middle Ages, this is the second in a series of monographs on all aspects of medieval culture. It examines the subject in its historical and socio-economic context, discussing evidence of artistic interchange between France and Flanders. During this period, Amiens was an important commercial, religious and cultural centre, poised geographically and politically between France and Flanders, the two most avant-garde regions in Northern Europe for panel painting and manuscript illumination. It also produced Simon Marmion, the most celebrated manuscript illuminator working in the Burgundian territories in the second half of the century.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cathedral Church of Amiens: A Short History and Description of Its Fabric It may save some disappointment to photographers who wish, during their stay in Amiens, to take negatives, if the writer warns them that all interior photography is absolutely forbidden to any one not furnished with the permit from the Ministre des Cultes.
