Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Beginnings in Europe The notes To the Pupil will be found very useful not only in testing the child's knowledge of the text, but also in stimulating his interest in men and events. The questions are not intended to cover all the facts in the text. They rather call attention to the more impor tant ones and suggest additional questions. They may be used m connection with the side topics to give variety to the recitation. Too much emphasis cannot be placed upon forming the important habit of locating every event on the map. Not only in preparing the lesson, but also in reciting it, maps should be brought constantly into use. Believing this, the author has taken special pains to see that the maps in this book contain no useless matter. The aim has been to put into them only what will help the pupil to under stand the meaning of the text. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book America and Europe Classic Reprint

Download or read book America and Europe Classic Reprint written by Adam G. De Gurowski and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-12 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from America and Europe The same phenomenon is reproduced in the development of all the cardinal and secondary races. The lights which illuminate the orbits of the human race were not enkindled simultaneously, but one by one. They radiated in various directions. Neither North nor South, neither this nor that primordial race, nor any branch issuing therefrom, has been, in ancient or in Christian times, the exclusive and predestined holder of the sacred fire. SO neither the man Of the North nor that of the South, is exclusively endowed with the love of liberty, or with exclusive mental and physical powers to secure and to sustain it. There is no social or historical law by which a special race is intrusted with the highest gifts which alone constitute the supremacy of man Over the inferior creation. The tendency to happiness is common to all, as well as the eiforts for amelioration. These tendencies manifest themselves differently, and at various epochs among various nations. They are evoked by accidents of human character, and constitute the brightest phenomena in the ascending movement of humanity. Their investiga tion unravels the laws by whose action nations appear and march on the stage of history. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Our Ancestors in Europe

Download or read book Our Ancestors in Europe written by Jennie Hall and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-15 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Ancestors in Europe: An Introduction to American History Author and editors agree in dissenting strongly from the theory that the way to be simple is to be brief. 7 Probably the chief vice of history textbooks has been the tendency to epitomize, to indulge in sweeping generalizations, to mislead through over-compactness. This book is accordingly some what longer than is usual, but in no sense heavier; on the contrary, it is more interesting and easier to study because the topics are limited in number, and sufficient space has been allowed to treat them clearly and vividly. Miss Hall has given to her task not only several years of painstaking labor and the consideration of much searching criticism, but her rare skill as a teacher of children, her nu usual gifts as a teller of stories, and the experience of travel in Greece and Italy. She has produced a book of distinctive character, one which children will read with pleasure as well as with profit and teachers will welcome as a contribution to the study of history in the grades. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Beginnings in Europe and America The history of the United States is a branch of the history of the world. Life in America is a transplanted European life. Its development here has been largely determined by new world conditions, but its origins were in Europe or even in that older world about the eastern end of the Mediterranean Sea. As civilization has been handed on from race to race during the ages, each people has added its own peculiar contribution to it. Primitive men who lived before the dawn of history, the earliest civilized nations of the Old East, the Hebrews, the Greeks, the Romans. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Europe Viewed Through American Spectacles By those who have visited Europe this volume will be found especially interesting, entertaining, and amusing; to those who intend to visit Europe, the author thinks it will be more valuable than most of the guide-books; and to those who do not expect to make a European tour, it will furnish much practical information that cannot be found in any other volume extant. To the Press of the country generally, which has so largely published fragmentary extracts from this tour of Europe, it is respectfully dedicated, in the hope that it will still further aid in enabling all Americans to see Europe through "American Spectacles." To our friend and fellow-traveler of ante-bellum times, that prince of good fellows, Murat Halstead, Esq., Editor of the Cincinnati Commercial, and our excellent friends. Colonel George W. Childs, Editor of the Philadelphia Ledger, and Hugh J. Hastings, Esq., of the New York Commercial, all of whom have given to their readers such copious extracts, we especially tender our thanks for a generous appreciation of our labors. Book An Introduction to American History

Download or read book An Introduction to American History written by Alice M. Atkinson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to American History: European Beginnings America. Of this distinction Miss Atkinson has been clearly con scious, and she has consistently viewed England not for its own sake but as our simplest and most elementary illustration of that general development of European culture which must form the background of an intelligent study of our own history. Miss Atkinson has had always before her those salutary warnings which Professor Johnson has'so comprehensively stated in his admirable pamphlet on History in the Elementary Schools. She has sedulously omitted everything which she could not treat in sufficient detail to make clear and interesting. I venture to hope that none of those ready but meaningless formulas which invite mere memorizing have slipped in, in spite of our vigilance, and that the form of statement chosen meets in every case the demands both of the pupil's mind and of historic accuracy. But this is 'a great deal to expect. In spite of the necessary limitations it is sur prising to see what a large number of interesting and important matters it has proved possible to compact into the volume, without haste or crowding. The author of this book has met the essential require ments of the Committee of Eight, but, believing that a sixth grade child will not make the association between the European Beginnings of our history and our own history, if the two are not given in close connection with out the break of a summer vacation, She has taken the liberty of shortening the time allotted to the study of European Beginnings, and has combined this subject with American history for a year's course. Book The American Era Classic Reprint

Download or read book The American Era Classic Reprint written by H. H. Powers and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Era I have written this book as the appeal of a citizen to his fellow citizens. I have written in the first person for I would fain be as personal as possible. The reader will find here no recondite scholarship, no marshalling of laboriously gathered facts, no startling revelation or new discovery. I write neither as one having authority nor yet as one of the scribes. I come as a citizen to meet his fellow citizens in committee of the whole to consider the condition of the country and of the world. The matters that concern us are commonplaces of popular knowledge whose meaning is after all no commonplace, for it is to these commonplaces that we must turn for the saving of the nations. I am dazed by the height to which we have suddenly been lifted as a people, and appalled at the abyss that yawns before us. Our opportunity is so immeasurably great, our temper so lawless, and our thought so unconscious that I await developments with mingled anticipation and terror. We seem at times to be walking like the somnambulist along some dizzy ledge where waking men fear to go. Yet wake we must and choose our path with open eyes. We shall find no royal road, no magic formula, no panacea. It is homely virtues that must save us, virtues that the world has known since Sinai, but virtues that are ever new in their application to changing conditions and require the renewal of our allegiance. In accordance with the purpose of the book I have made a minimum use of footnotes and reference to authorities. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Vacations in Europe Europe is no longer terra Incognita to the cultivated American, and books of travel of the old-fashioned, purely informing type have lost their excuse for being.
