During this time the person can become better acquainted with the laws of this country and learn certain conditions of our government. After the Constitution has been read and written in their note books and studied questions are given bearing on all phases of the Constitution. The Constitution should be so well understood and made a part of their lives that they will be able to answer the questions without much trouble. The teacher must not look for perfection, for if he does he will be disappointed to a greater or less extent, for after he has explained and worked to make things plain it is surprising how things will become tangled when they attempt to tell them in the English language. They may understand fairly well in their own language but become terribly confused when they try to express it in English. The teacher must ever bear in mind that these men are trying to learn and at the same time working hard all day to support a family and send their children to school that they may grow to be loyal citizens of this country. Book excerpt: Established by an act of Congress in 1879, the Carlisle Indian Industrial School in central Pennsylvania was conceived as a paramilitary residential boarding school that would solve the then-pressing Indian Question by forcibly assimilating and Americanizing Native American youth. A major part of this process was the so-called before and after portrait, which displayed the individual in his or her allegedly degenerate state before Americanization, and then again following its conclusion. In this historical study, Mauro analyzes the visual imagery produced at the Carlisle Indian Industrial School as a specific instance of the aesthetics of Americanization at work. His work combines a consideration of cultural contexts and themes specific to the United States of the time and critical theory to flesh out innovative historical readings of the photographic materials.

It argues that beginning with seventeenth century puritan leaders such as John Winthrop and Cotton Maher, the pattern of American education has been not the promotion of a blend of different cultures but the indoctrination of norms of belief of religion, politics and economics and an explicit discouragement of cultural variety. It traces the political role of education at key junctures of American history – after Independence, in the reconstruction of the South after the Civil War, in the establishment of settlement houses and the use of scientific management techniques by employers. The author focuses on the period 1900–1925 when new waves of immigrants from southern and eastern Europe led to a new drive for orthodoxy.
