Book excerpt: Excerpt from Americanization: Principles of Americanism, Essentials of Americanization, Technic of Race-Assimilation, Annotated Bibliography This volume on Americanism and Americanization is offered as a means for further clarifying our national thought in regard to present vital problems. From the Elder Statesmen and writers of today essential excerpts are quoted briefly. These writings have not been readily accessible to many, and yet they should be known to all of us, native-born and new citizens alike, in order that we may all become better Americans. The chapters on Americanism and Americanization are a digest of American philosophy in relation to those ideals and principles which inform American life. The chapter on Technic of Race-Assimilation is a compendium of practice, giving the details of assimilation-methods in education, industry, politics, and everyday living. The annotated Bibliography is a helpful selected list of books on Americanism and Americanization. The titles relating to Race-assimilation include all the available periodical references since 1900. The whole volume constitutes a reference book of unique value to everyone who believes in America as a world force for civilization and democracy as opposed to exploitation and autocracy. Book Americanism and Americanization

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the current state of foreign affairs, the terms "Americanism" and "Americanization" sometimes take on an unexpected--and an unflattering--connotation. Americanism essentially involves values, beliefs, ideals, goods and practices in local settings outside the United States that are in some way related or attributed to American influence. While the validity of this influence may be under scrutiny, it requires a detailed historical--and sometimes cultural--analysis to understand all the dynamics and implications of Americanization. A variety of factors contributes to this influence, including the preoccupation and reception of the relevant culture itself. For instance, many European countries have at times demonstrated a preoccupation with all things American which was not necessarily swayed by any action of America itself. The overall actualization of Americanization, however, encompasses a number of societal dimensions, including power differentials in the exchange processes concerned. Informed by a history of relevant developments since the early nineteenth century, this volume presents an in-depth critical analysis of the Americanization process. Beginning with a survey of early European preoccupations with things American, the book goes on to discuss European concerns regarding American influence after World War II. The work then looks at Americanism and its influence within the United States itself, especially regarding developments during the New Deal and beyond. The primary goal of the analysis is the construction of an interpretative framework, allowing for a more balanced approach to the study of Americanism abroad. Written from a critical, social-emancipatory perspective, the author's approach blends economic, military, social, political, cultural and psychological dimensions as well as an examination of the ways in which these areas interact. Finally, Americanism is examined as part of a U.S.-style corporate globalization at the current juncture. Instructors considering this book for use in a course may request an examination copy here.

Download or read book Essentials of Americanization Classic Reprint written by Emory S. Bogardus and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essentials of Americanization To Help Win the War for Democracy is the main purpose of this book. The overthrowing of the Prussian autocracy was one vital phase of the struggle for democratic principles. The perfecting of our American democracy is another important aspect of this world-wide problem. That this volume will assist the cause of democracy, in some small way, is the hope of the author. The Federal government has directed our attention officially to the subject of Americanization. Through the recently established Division of Americanization, the entire country is being organized for that work. To aid in this splendid undertaking is the second aim of the writer. There are many private and semi-public organizations which are carrying on unrelated plans of assimilation. In the activities of some of these organizations, Americanization is receiving a narrow-minded and autocratic expression. It will fail wherever it denies the validity of comprehensive and fundamental principles. We dare not base it chiefly on compulsion. We must make it attractive and magnetic and just. To help meet this need is the third leading purpose which has caused the writing of this treatise. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
