Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Quarter Centennial of Boston University: Program and Addresses Boston University was incorporated by the Legislature of Massachusetts in the year 1869, which was forty-seven years after the incorporation of Boston as a city, and two hundred and thirty-nine years after the original settlement of the town in 1630. The first to advocate its establishment was a Massachusetts senator, the Honorable Lee Claflin. His friend, Isaac Rich, a wealthy merchant and real estate owner, by making the proposed institution his heir, and heading the application for a Charter, took the decisive step that ensured the beginning of the enterprise. The Governor, whose name was officially appended to the Charter, - his Excellency William Claflin, a Doctor of Laws of Harvard University and a son of the Honorable Lee Claflin, - was an original member of the Corporation, and since 1872 he has continuously served as its President. In this latter office he succeeded the Honorable Jacob Sleeper, one of the three original incorporators, a member of a former Governor's Council, and for twelve years a state-appointed Overseer of Harvard University. In accordance with a supplementary enactment by the legislature of the Commonwealth, the Boston Theological Seminary was, in the year 1871, transferred to the University and made its first department. The following year the School of Law was opened, and a College of Music. One year later there followed the College of Liberal Arts, a School of Oratory, and the School of Medicine. The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, then called the School of All Sciences, was also at this time planned. This book was released on 2016-08-24 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Higher Education, Its Function in Preserving and Extending Our Civilization: University Convocation Address Delivered at the Quarter Centennial Boston University, May 31, 1898 He meets it in every recitation room and in the general con duct of the institution. He finds himself in association with a large number of students all occupied upon this work of learning the regulative principles not only of human conduct but also of the world of knowledge. The lawyer, after working years and years over his cases, comes by and by to have what is called a legal mind, so that he sees at a glance, almost as by intuition, what the law will be in a new case. So, in the four years of college under graduate life, the student gets an insight which enables him to decide immediately a phase of the problem of life. He forms a habit of mind which inquires constantly of each thing and event: How does this look in the light of the whole of human learning? What is the good form which the consensus of the scholars of the world has fixed for this? He learns at once to suspect what are called isms and universal pana ceas as one-sided statements. The wisdom of the race begins to form a conscious element of his life. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Harvard: The First American University Of young men for the ministry. Nothing could show clearer the spirit of these early colonists. Though less than four thousand in number, and scattered along the shores of Massachusetts Bay in sixteen hamlets, they were, nevertheless, able to engage in such an enterprise before ade quate provision had been made for food, raiment, shelter, a civil government, or divine worship; at a time when soil and climate had disappointed them, and their affairs were in a most critical condition; for, not only were they called to face famine, dis ease, and death, but the mother country and the surrounding sav age tribes were threatening them with war. The importance, not only of mental cultivation, but also of Christian learning, they had always valued in England, and, as they built their homes. Book The Land Grant Colleges and the Reshaping of American Higher Education

Download or read book The Land Grant Colleges and the Reshaping of American Higher Education written by Roger L. Geiger and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work provides a critical reexamination of the origin and development of America's land-grant colleges and universities, created by the most important piece of legislation in higher education. The story is divided into five parts that provide closer examinations of representative developments.Part I describes the connection between agricultural research and American colleges. Part II shows that the responsibility of defining and implementing the land-grant act fell to the states, which produced a variety of institutions in the nineteenth century. Part III details the first phase of the conflict during the latter decades of the nineteenth century about whether land colleges were intended to be agricultural colleges, or full academic institutions. Part IV focuses on the fact that full-fledged universities became dominant institutions of American higher education. The final part shows that the land-grant mission is alive and well in university colleges of agriculture and, in fact, is inherent to their identity.Including some of the best minds the field has to offer, this volume follows in the fine tradition of past books in Transaction's Perspectives on the History of Higher Education series.

Book The American Founding

Download or read book The American Founding written by Daniel N. Robinson and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2012-06-28 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America's Founding Fathers shared similar beliefs on the nature of civic life and the character of those supposed to be able to self-govern. Although they studied the failed republics of the ancient world, they believed that classical ideals were still applicable to politics. This unique contribution to the literature on American Founding gathers leading thinkers who set out not to relate its history, but its intellectual underpinnings. They explore the Founding Fathers' assumptions about civic life, human nature, political institutions, private morality, aesthetics, education, and history. Chapters on natural law, the Judeo-Christian conception of human nature, the influence of Aristotle and Cicero, the symbolic role of architecture, and the importance of education help understand the foundations that led to the Declaration of Independence and a constitutional charter that aimed to be universal in its human aspirations. This authoritative work provides a conservative response to more liberal interpretations of America. It will enrich the debate on civic life and be a key resource to anyone interested in America's "experiment in ordered liberty."

Book A Faithful Account of the Race

Download or read book A Faithful Account of the Race written by Stephen G. Hall and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2009-10-15 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The civil rights and black power movements expanded popular awareness of the history and culture of African Americans. But, as Stephen Hall observes, African American authors, intellectuals, ministers, and abolitionists had been writing the history of the black experience since the 1800s. With this book, Hall recaptures and reconstructs a rich but largely overlooked tradition of historical writing by African Americans. Hall charts the origins, meanings, methods, evolution, and maturation of African American historical writing from the period of the Early Republic to the twentieth-century professionalization of the larger field of historical study. He demonstrates how these works borrowed from and engaged with ideological and intellectual constructs from mainstream intellectual movements including the Enlightenment, Romanticism, Realism, and Modernism. Hall also explores the creation of discursive spaces that simultaneously reinforced and offered counternarratives to more mainstream historical discourse. He sheds fresh light on the influence of the African diaspora on the development of historical study. In so doing, he provides a holistic portrait of African American history informed by developments within and outside the African American community.
