Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American Studies has long been a home for adventurous students seeking to understand the culture and politics of the United States. Despite being taught in universities around the world, American Studies has resisted developing a coherent methodology for fear of losing the flexibility and freedom to imagine new avenues of thought. But what if these fears are misplaced? Through a fresh look at the origins of the field, this book contends that a shared set of “rules” can offer a springboard to creativity. American Studies: A User’s Guide offers readers a critical introduction to the history and methods of the field, useful strategies for interpretation, curation, analysis, and theory, and case studies of American Studies in practice.

Book Annotations in Greek and Latin Texts from Egypt

Download or read book Annotations in Greek and Latin Texts from Egypt written by Kathleen McNamee and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 644 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A series of nine introductory essays sets the process of annotating texts back into the various contexts from which the notes originally derive -- the scholar's study, the teacher's schoolroom, etc. -- and examines the ways in which annotations were inscribed into the rolls and codices. The last three essays (Part Three. "Select Annotated Texts") pay special attention to the copious tradition of annotations in Archaic Lyric and Iambic (Pindar, Bacchylides, Alcaeus, and Hipponax), Hellenistic Poetry (Callimachus and Theocritus), and Prose authors, distilling from the jejune entries the complex relationships between commentaries and the annotations. The Corpus proper, containing the Marginal and Interlinear Notes from the Greek and Latin literary papyri from Egypt, is arranged alphabetically by author (from Aeschylus to Xenophon) and the papyri themselves identified by their "Mertens-Pack 3" number (MP3); the Adespota, both poetry and prose, follow. The section with Latin is considerably shorter, as might be expected in the Greek-speaking East, but the notations to Cicero, Juvenal, and the texts of Roman law are, nonetheless, more often in Greek than Latin. The volume closes with a comprehensive list of annotated papyri (from MP3 23 to 2866, plus a few un-catalogued items) that summarizes the information contained in the Catalogue; a bibliography and a concordance between edition and MP3 number, and indices (Greek words, Latin words, hybrid Greek/Latin forms, and a general index of authors and topics covered) finish off the volume.

Book A Prosopography of Byzantine Aphrodito

Download or read book A Prosopography of Byzantine Aphrodito written by Giovanni Ruffini and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, which replaces Girgis's outdated prosopography from 1938, is an annotated record of every person attested in the Byzantine-era papyri from the middle Egyptian village of Aphrodito. Its papyri make Aphrodito the best attested village for this time period with implications for the study of rural life throughout Late Antiquity. For each entry, the author lists all the relevant texts and all known information about that person's social status, political position and family relations with a summary of activities for each attestation. The volume is indispensable for any scholar working with texts from Aphrodito and valuable for all concerned specifically with Egypt and more generally with rural life in Late Antiquity.

Book Christians and Muslims in Early Islamic Egypt

Download or read book Christians and Muslims in Early Islamic Egypt written by Lajos Berkes and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2022-01-10 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume collects studies exploring the relationship of Christians and Muslims in everyday life in Early Islamic Egypt (642–10th c.) focusing mainly, but not exclusively on administrative and social history. The contributions concentrate on the papyrological documentation preserved in Greek, Coptic, and Arabic. By doing so, this book transcends traditional disciplinary boundaries and offers results based on a holistic view of the documentary material. The articles of this volume discuss various aspects of change and continuity from Byzantine to Islamic Egypt and offer also the (re)edition of 23 papyrus documents in Greek, Coptic, and Arabic. The authors provide a showcase of recent papyrological research on this under-studied, but dynamically evolving field. After an introduction by the editor of the volume that outlines the most important trends and developments of the period, the first two essays shed light on Egypt as part of the Caliphate. The following six articles, the bulk of the volume, deal with the interaction and involvement of the Egyptian population with the new Muslim administrative apparatus. The last three studies of the volume focus on naming practices and language change.
