Book excerpt: Excerpt from American State Universities: Their Origin and Progress; A History of Congressional University Land-Grants, a Particular Account of the Rise and Development of the University of Michigan and Hints Toward the Future of the American University System The preface to a book is a device in order that its author may say, in regard to his work, something which ought to be known and still could not well be put together in a connected way in the body of the work. It may have reference to the origin of the work, or its plan and purpose, or to the authorities consulted, or anything personal to himself or others who may have been concerned in its production, or to all these. This book did not originate in the author's conceit of his own special qualifications to prepare it. He was repeatedly urged to write a series of sketches of early university history for the University Chronicle; this he did, the articles numbering in all about twenty. These were favorably referred to in the Detroit and other papers, and several of them were stolen and published as original in a New York periodical. Dr. Haven, at that time president of the University of Michigan, on several occasions urged their elaboration into a volume, and supported his advice by words which seemed indeed too flattering, in regard to the author's qualifications for such an undertaking. As the facts brought out in these articles related solely to an earlier period than that of Dr. Haven's first connection with the University, his words were taken as expressing an unbiased and honest, though perhaps mistaken conviction, that the author was the right man for this work. Dr. H. gave furthermore this sound advice: "Trust your own judgment and do not submit your work to others for opinions by which to be governed; they will only confuse your own mind." His opinion has not been asked and was never offered, and the work, with the exception of two or three chapters which contain no references to the personalities of the present time, was submitted to no one for an opinion until after its completion. The original plan embraced only a history of the University of Michigan. Reflection, however, led to a change. Book excerpt: In the 1960s and '70s, Michigan State College transformed into the major research institution known today as Michigan State University, a true "megaversity." Michigan State University, the final volume of this trilogy, explores the history of that transformation and the growing pains the school endured as it became a part of the Association of American Universities. From President John A. Hannah's vision, the new university has been defined by rapid expansion, growth, new opportunities, and the occasional crisis. Its development has been a massive undertaking that marshaled individuals, research interests, federal funds, state appropriations, and more. Through the vicissitudes of government funding and other challenges, the university has established itself as a renowned research and educational institution with a remarkably rich array of facilities, scientists, and researchers who continue to make landmark contributions to their fields. At the same time it has strived to be known for its accessibility, diversity, equality of opportunity, and antidiscrimination policies and practices. Michigan State University sheds new light on the growth of this dynamic and multifaceted institution.

Book Michigan Agricultural College

Download or read book Michigan Agricultural College written by Keith R. Widder and published by Msu Sesquicentennial. This book was released on 2005 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vintage photographs profusely illustrate this step back in time, reliving the stirring saga of America s premier land-grant institution, long before it became Michigan State University. Discover how forward-looking legislators, scholars, and administrators found an oak clearing in the midst of central Michigan swampland and there laid the groundwork for what would become one of the world s great universities. From the school s founding in 1855, and for the next seventy years that are discussed in this volume, the institution struggled to find itself and, in the process, helped to invent the notion of what it means to be a university "for the people," a land-grant university. Widder demonstrates how, from the beginning, presidents, teachers, researchers, and students worked to carve out a place for the school called "M.A.C." They always insisted that M.A.C. would be an institution of grand vision; it would be an "ag school," to be sure, but it should be more than that. In the early 1860s, for instance, students threatened to leave the campus when they learned that the teaching of literature and other liberal arts classes might be suspended. Throughout these early years, M.A.C. grew, weathered financial crises, and endured three wars, all the time transforming itself as a kind of grand experiment to meet the educational needs of a nation on the move. M.A.C. matured; its alumni and its faculty soon began to make notable contributions to the world s scientific and intellectual development and to pose solutions to pressing social, economic, and political problems. What a time it must have been."
