Book American Slavery and Colour Classic Reprint

Download or read book American Slavery and Colour Classic Reprint written by William Chambers and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Slavery and Colour The sight of a few Slave Sales has a wonderful efi'ect in awakening the feelings on the subject of Slavery. The thing is seen to be an undeniable reality - no mere invention of the novelist. From time to time, the spectacle of an auction-stand on which one man is selling another, flashes back upon the mind. For three years, I have been haunted by recollections of that saddening scene, and taken a gradually deepening interest in American Slavery -its present condition, its mysterious future. Having already referred to the subject, I should not again have intruded on public notice, but for the recent exciting discussions concerning Slavery, the protracted struggle in Kansas, and the probability of further contests between Slavery and Freedom, consequent on the organisation of new States in the southern section of the Union. Download or read book American Sectionalism in the British Mind 1832 1863 written by Peter O'Connor and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2017-11-13 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using an innovative interdisciplinary approach, American Sectionalism in the British Mind, 1832–1863 provides a corrective to simplified interpretations of British attitudes towards the US during the antebellum and early Civil War periods. It explores the many complexities of transatlantic politics and culture and examines developing British ideas about US sectionalism, from the abolition of slavery in the British Empire and the Nullification Crisis in South Carolina (1832/1883) through to the Civil War. It also demonstrates how these pre-war engagements with the US influenced popular British responses to the outbreak of the Civil War.

Book The Elite of Our People Joseph Willson s Sketches of Black Upper Class Life in Antebellum Philadelphia

Download or read book The Elite of Our People Joseph Willson s Sketches of Black Upper Class Life in Antebellum Philadelphia written by and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sketches of the Higher Classes of Colored Society in Philadelphia, first published in 1841, was written by Joseph Willson, a southern black man who had moved to Philadelphia. He wrote this book to convince whites that the African-American community in his adopted city did indeed have a class structure, and he offers advice to his black readers about how they should use their privileged status. The significance of Willson's account lies in its sophisticated analysis of the issues of class and race in Philadelphia. It is all the more important in that it predates W. E. B. Du Bois's The Philadelphia Negro by more than half a century. Julie Winch has written a substantial introduction and prepared extensive annotation. She identifies the people Willson wrote about and gives readers a sense of Philadelphia's multifaceted and richly textured African American community. The Elite of Our People will interest urban, antebellum, and African-American historians, as well as individuals with a general interest in African-American history. This volume has withstood the test of time. It remains readable. Joseph Willson was well read, articulate, and had a keen eye for detail. His message is as timely today as it was in 1841. The people he wrote about were remarkable individuals whose lives were as complex as his own.
