Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Currier's collection of American art focuses on New England from colonial times through the twentieth century, with special emphasis on work unique to New Hampshire, such as furniture made by the Dunlap family and paintings by artists working in the White Mountains. . . Although individual objects have been lent frequently to other museums, this exhibition marks the first time that a large selection of masterworks from the permanent collection of the Currier has toured the nation. Organized with the American Federation of Arts to tour during the renovation of the Currier's landmark building, 'American Art from the Currier Gallery of Art' focuses on painting, sculpture, silver, pewter, glass, and furniture from the eighteenth to the early twentieth century, just prior to America's embrace of modernism." -- Foreword.

Book excerpt: The history of American silver offers invaluable insights into the economic and cultural history of the nation itself. Published here for the first time, the Art Institute of Chicago's superb collection embodies innovation and beauty from the colonial era to the present. In the 17th century, silversmiths brought the fashions of their homelands to the colonies, and in the early 18th, new forms arose as technology diversified production. Demand increased in the 19th century as the Industrial Revolution took hold. In the 20th, modernism changed the shape of silver inside and outside the home. This beautifully illustrated volume presents highlights from the collection with stunning photography and entries from leading specialists. In-depth essays relate a fascinating story about eating, drinking, and entertaining that spans the history of the Republic and trace the development of the Art Institute's holdings of American silver over nearly a century.

Book Revisiting America The Prints of Currier and Ives

Download or read book Revisiting America The Prints of Currier and Ives written by and published by Joslyn Art Museum. This book was released on 2020-11-10 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Engravings for the people" a fresh appraisal of the printmakers Currier & Ives and their vision of America Currier & Ives was a powerhouse of 19th-century publishing and had an immeasurable influence on American visual culture. Founded in New York in 1834 by Nathaniel Currier, the company expanded to include a new partner, James Merritt Ives, after 1857. Currier & Ives produced millions of affordably priced copies of over 7,000 original lithographs, living up to its self-appointed title as "The Grand Central Depot for Cheap and Popular Prints." The firm took advantage of New York City's booming arts culture in the latter half of the 19th century, but its output was not seen as fine art by critics, nor was it intended as such. Its prints were first and foremost commodities; the choice subjects often determined by popularity and sales figures. Currier & Ives perpetuated Victorian ideals in its depictions of family, history, politics and urban and suburban life. But these prints also served as an important record of a nation in the midst of an extraordinary transformation from a rural and agricultural landscape to an industrialized and urbanized global power. Along with their popular appeal, Currier & Ives's images offer a new opportunity to uncover the complexities and contradictions of our history and help shape our understanding of America's past.
